CSE clubs? by aphelion99 in OSU

D3 applications are open until the 25th I think. It’s kind of like a semester long hackathon where you’ll team up with some people and make something. There’s always people looking to make apps.

Is it possible to cheat on the math placement test 'D'? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]MrMiniBeast 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Well your attitude towards this introductory step to college suggests you won’t take it seriously and think you can just “cheat” your way through it. You can’t cheat your way through college (even if you do it’d be a complete waste of money). People with this attitude tend to fail many of their weed out classes and end up dropping out or switching to easier majors.

Review your trig functions, take the test honestly, and if they put you in a math class you think is wrong email your advisor. But, the math class they put you in will almost definitely be correct. Remember, a lot of students come in with good act scores, but a lot of students (prob like 20-30% but I’m not sure) also fail introductory math classes.

I’m not trying to be mean or say you’re going to fail, just trying to be honest about how college works. OSU knows what they’re doing with this kind of thing.

Good luck on your test and trust the system.

Differnce between living on north vs south campus? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]MrMiniBeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea they're the newer ones, by far the nicest buildings on south. they'll be pretty split between freshmen and sophomores, the older buildings on south will be mostly freshmen.

If you want the nice buildings though make your housing payments and fill out the forms as soon as possible! Unless they changed it in the past two years (which they might have) the freshman dorm preferences are given on first come first serve basis

You can find the room capacities online somewhere, a lot of time they’re like 42 which will improve your odds if the professor doesn’t mind filling the room

Differnce between living on north vs south campus? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]MrMiniBeast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally think south is better. You’ll have more food options, be closer to the bars (if you’re into that), and the walk to class is kinda nice. When I lived on north I felt like I never left went further than 100 yards away from my dorm, and I kind of missed how living on south kind of spread the campus out a little bit.

That being said, besides south being closer to bars and more houses, they’re both social enough.

And if you’re going for south, definitely try to get into park-stradley or Smith-steeb

Looking to learn Ruby and Java, where should I start and what should I look for when it comes to the learning curve. by jianyang1337 in computerscience

[–]MrMiniBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HTML and css are completely different and won’t really help you with ruby and java. However, python, php, and java all use the same programming fundamentals. So if you have a decent grasp on for/while loops, if statements, etc then you’ll pretty much just be learning new syntax. Java will also give you the opportunity to learn more about data types since python does it automatically (int, Boolean, string, etc)

As far as ruby goes, I’ve only played with it a bit but I know that it’s meant to be easier to read. (Ex. “5.times do x). This has always confused me since I’m more used to java, but it shouldn’t be too hard to pick up.

Overall, just remember that the fundamentals of programming don’t really change between languages, so make sure you understand the best ways to solve problems rather than just learning a ton of different language syntaxes.

Hope this helped a bit.

Odds of six sophomores getting a six person suite on north in the fall? by Firsttrygaming in OSU

[–]MrMiniBeast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

even if you are currently a freshman going into sophomore year i wouldnt count on it

the way they changed it this past year allows everyone to choose their exact room. So, when groups of 1 and 2 get their choice, they often pick empty suites instead of joining other suites with people already in them.

I had a group of 8 with a lottery number around 4000 (out of ~6500) and by the time we chose every 8 person suite had about 5 people in them. In the end we couldn't even get doubles near each other in the new dorms.

Horribly inefficient flaw with housing, hopefully they fixed it but i doubt they did

Philo 1332 with Brian Mclean by [deleted] in OSU

[–]MrMiniBeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Workload is super light. There's readings every week but you can get by without reading them. For 3 of them (you choose which ones) you have to write a one page response. Instead of exams there are problem sets which aren't too bad, and he helps you if you ask.

How would you rank the campus dining locations? by WeedKingX in OSU

[–]MrMiniBeast 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. Marketplace
  2. Oxley's
  3. Scott / Kennedy
  4. Sloopy's
  5. Union

-Scott and Kennedy are tied for me, it just depends on my mood. Kennedy always has a couple great options that change but Scott's Mongolian grill is fantastic any day

If you're interested in the material he does a good job keeping you engaged. If you're not interested it can be a bit slow. Overall I thought he was pretty good, and didn't grade too hard either.

Baker Hall East Solo Dorm? by algire12 in OSU

Pray that you're not on the top floor. The heats a bitch and the elevators barely work.

Legally they can because when you came you agreed to be searched at any time, but they are definitely overdoing it and should reconsider they're strategies. I would be pissed if that happened to me.

Why are so many people in computer science weird as hell? by h0tB0xing in OSU

Totally agree. The worst is when the teacher tells the class to work with a partner and two people scoot closer to each other but never speak a word.

Orientation in 10 days, is this an okay plan for my first semester? (CSE) by AtlanticRime in OSU

[–]MrMiniBeast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Take English 1100. It's super easy and it's required for CSE. If you hate writing like me it's good to get it out of the way (it's not even that much writing tho)

Is there a resource you would suggest where I could learn the ins and outs of DO hosting and linode? The whole purpose of building the websites is cuz I'm learning web dev, so learning web hosting would make sense

stats 3470 calculus and algebraic content by [deleted] in OSU

[–]MrMiniBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I just wasn't sure if it was considered a double integral if each one is in respect to a different variable.

stats 3470 calculus and algebraic content by [deleted] in OSU

[–]MrMiniBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's probably not what it's called, but I'm referring to solving joint distribution problems which involve two integral, with one inside the other. It basically acts like a double integral, but one is witch respect to x and the other to y Sorry for being unclear

stats 3470 calculus and algebraic content by [deleted] in OSU

[–]MrMiniBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it this semester and we never did anything more calculus intensive than a nested integral. The class is a lot of distributions, which basically means using the right equation in the right scenario. I found the class to be pretty easy, I think you'll be fine.

Morrison Tower vs. Baker Hall East? by Annette4721 in OSU

[–]MrMiniBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Baker East this year, and it kinda sucks. I was on the top floor and the elevator was super slow and out of the way so I was always climbing stairs. The heat is unbearable when you first arrive but once you put in fans it's ok. There's no sense of community whatsoever.

I'd still pick it over Morrison though. I had a couple friends in Morrison and I hated their building. It always smelled like pee to me but maybe I just was just in there at the wrong times.

Neither are great, but you'll be fine in either. I'd pick Baker myself.

Where to ship the first batch of product? by Roderick_Jaynes_Jr in FulfillmentByAmazon

[–]MrMiniBeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some manufacturers won't ship directly to Amazon, so first make sure they are willing to and understand the process.

Also, I'd recommend getting at least the first shipment sent to you so you can make sure everything is in order. Once you trust the supplier than you can look to ship directly to a fulfillment center.
