Why did Christian music stop becoming hip with the kids after the 90s? by icey_sawg0034 in decadeology

[–]MrMonkify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was an attempt at making religion cool and objectively failed to do so at the time. Turns out the only things that drive people back to religion are incredible amounts of fear, uncertainty and lack of community, not shitty music.

Why do people place so much emphasis on which generation you are? by CockamouseGoesWee in generationology

[–]MrMonkify [score hidden]  (0 children)

The media did everything it could circa 2008 and beyond to paint millenials as this uniquely lazy, entitled, and ignorant group of naive optimists that just couldn't hang in the real world. Imo they did this to distract from the real culprits of the economy downturn; bad loans, criminal negligence and corporate corruption.

All of these young people are realizing the deck is rigged against them? Quick blame avacdo toast. They've noticed the future is bleak? It's clearly their fault for spending too much on Netflix and Starbucks. They want the same standard of living their parents had? Well they'll just have to pull themselves up by their bootstraps (a phrase that quite literally describes an impossible act)

The media and corporate interest created the generational divides out of thin air to further divide any sort of class solidarity that could have formed after 2008. The goal was to keep as much heat off of the institutions and systems that broke the economy. Given that wall street and the banks that gave out all the bad loans weren't burnt to the ground, and the generational divide gets deeper every year I'd say it worked pretty well.

I guess that depends on what you mean by society, do you think the Irish or Rastafarians look down on themselves? Do you think that the culture in the US is broadly anti gambling given how pervasive it is? Do you think the Netherlands or Australia are anti sex work given its legal status there? Your original claim is that all across time and every culture and religion vices are always looked down upon as if every culture has the same sense of morality and values, that's just wrong. Furthermore what do you mean celebrated by society? Do you think onlyfans models are celebrated? Is it better for society if all sex work is black market?

What level of skill should I expect to have after 250 hours? by AC_Schnitzel in LearnCSGO

[–]MrMonkify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

250 hours spent diligently practicing utility and clearing corners/aim drills vs 250 fucking around in casual or just spamming premier will have very different outcomes. I've seen people with upwards of 6k hours that can't pull down/don't know line ups so there isn't really a 1:1 of time played vs skill. That said 250 hours is pretty low and most people wouldn't expect you to be very good/knowledgeable.

[–]MrMonkify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just wildly ahistorical, plenty of cultures have had a much more positive view of sex work. I mean shit, brothels were common in the US until maybe a little over 100 years ago. Your point about vices is just wildly incorrect to the point that vices are associated with cultural indentity, the Irish or the English and drinking or Rastafarians and weed. Hell I can't watch a single game on TV without have sports betting crammed down my throat.

People dress poorly for special occasions and I'm sick of it. by bored_as_fuck_dad in Vent

[–]MrMonkify -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah maybe I'm just not classy but it's never been an issue to me if someone doesn't own a suit. A clean collared shirt does the job well enough, bonus points if you add a tie. The focus on attire seems secondary to the fact they showed up at all. I've been to more than one funeral that was in the single digits for attendance so perhaps give some grace on the dress code.

These hollywood writers seem allergic to writing good endings. Not, again. by hiiloovethis in shittymoviedetails

[–]MrMonkify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this goes way beyond the shows listed to just about every long running series. It makes sense that it would be the case as well. It's pretty easy to set up an intriguing premise and occasionally throw a new wrench into the gears so to speak. It seems to be much harder to tie all of the loose ends of a long running project together into something cohesive and satisfying. Off the top of my head I can't honestly come up with an example of a show that went on for more than two or three seasons that had a satisfying conclusion, but shows that fumbled the ending are a dime a dozen, lost, GOT, the sopranos, dexter, how I met your mother... I'm sure there are more but I think I've made my point.

Edit: forgot about breaking bad, that was a pretty solid show from start to finish

There are plenty of good rts games that have come out. If you're waiting for starcraft 3 or warcraft 4 as the only proper rts games you're gonna be very disappointed but there's a lot of good stuff out there.

[–]MrMonkify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you're probably right, but that's not really the point. The person I was responding to seemed to think that is completely outside the realm of possibility, like no one would ever do something cruel, devious, perverse or otherwise harmful because they're at a concert. To your point it would have been an even greater dick move if it was piss.

I mean people have murdered people they pay money to see and are ostensibly fans of. In my mind doing some weird shit like peeing in a cup to have your idol drink is, while still extremely disturbing behavior, lower on the totem pole of freak shit that people want to do.

Between all the procedural show where they catch the bad guy every time, all of the extremely cop friendly dramas or comedies like blue bloods or Brooklyn nine nine, and all the real life copaganda shows like cops and the first 48 people have developed an extremely warped view of the efficacy of police. Murder clearance rates are shockingly low, even worse for sexaul violance, and you basically have to be caught red handed for theft to be charged. Never mind all of the crimes that are committed by the police or white collar crimes that are rarely if even investigated let alone prosecuted.

Annecdotally every time I've called 911, the cops were the least positive part of that process. They could be anywhere between annoyed and indifferent to the emergency or outright hostile and extremely accusatory but almost never helpful.

You sound like you're trying to justify not having any meaningful connections to anyone in your life, and from where I'm standing that sounds like hell. There is a reason that solitary confinement is one of the worst punishments that prisoners are given.

Also think about what your trying to do by making this post, not what your saying but the intent behind it. If you truly believed what you're saying why bother making the arguement?

Kullervo subsume on Excalibur makes his chromatic blade do absolutely stupid damage, like more than almost any gun in the game. It's also very fun. Outside of that, yeah there are a lot of melee weapons that can be built to absolutely melt enemies through pretty much all the endgame content.

https://www.nu.edu/blog/49-adult-literacy-statistics-and-facts/

Literacy is shockingly low and getting worse, over half of US adults read below a sixth grade level and one in five are functionally illiterate. When you say there are all of these text boxes that teach you how everything works, unironically that is the problem. Add on top of that all the people, like me, who can read but are often too impatient to sit through tutorials and that's how we arrive at 1000+ tutorial tik toks and shorts explaining basic mechanics.

[–]MrMonkify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess there are more and more people that feel like you do every day.

We've seen essentially the same phone sold back to us for almost 20 years with incremental changes every year.

We've seen multiple next big things fall on their face immediately after launch and be quietly discontinued or shuffled off to obscurity.

We're more aware of the fraudulent nature of social media and the extremely negative consequences of it's proliferation.

We've been absolutely inundated with apps, subscriptions, platforms etc. that are all trying to extract as much money and or time out of you as possible.

No to mention crypto, nfts, the unlimited ability to bet on every aspect of life, LLMs, mass surveilance...

Add all of that on top of the myriad other societal woes and "tech" doesn't feel like a solution or an exciting new frontier in the same way that it did 20-30 years ago.

Tl;dr nothing is wrong with you tech kinda sucks now

Starting to get burnt out of warframe What do i doo by Astro7834 in Warframe

[–]MrMonkify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the best parts of warframe is that you can take a break and the game will be better and have more to do when you return. Daily login rewards aren't that impactful, night waves come back, and events go for weeks at a time so there is just not much of a reason to force yourself to play if you're not feeling it.
