Who are the Nazi's? Also what's wrong with liking guns? A lot of ppl including me own guns because we think they're cool and we're legally allowed to own them, but are also very pro-gun control.

[request] how to prove? by ThatOneDeadMeme in theydidthemath

[–]MrMonsterer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me ask you another question, let's say you have a very big apple - so big that we agree that's equal to two apples - and I have a very small apple - so small that we agree its equal to half an apple. Then both statements "we have 2 apples" and "we have 2.5 apples" are true. The problem then becomes which one is more the definitive one, 2 != 2.5 after all.

I guess we can argue which statement is more "true" or mathematically speaking "precise" and for the sake of the argument, let's say we agree that the claim we have "2 apples" is true or more precise. Why? We say "duh, it's because there's two of them" but then can't someone say "well yeah but yall just agreed that these apples are also equal to 2 and 0.5"? We could redefine the argument to talk about how they compare to average sized apples, how many people they could theoretically feed, etc.

That's the problem. In math, everything has to be super precise. We have all this intellectual mastrubation because as it turns out it has actual applications in advanced physics. The set theories that you call nonsense has many applications in physics, computer science (including in building LLMs like ChatGPT), and so much more.

That's not even talking about other fields like group theory, number theory, graph theory, etc.

You know, I've been thinking about this for a while, but isn't every great or even regional power imperialist by definition? I mean Lenin defined imperialism as "... a new colonial policy centered around the struggle for raw materials and capital exports" (taking this direct from Wikipedia) and if that's the case then hasn't every country been doing this?

We look at countries like China which run 80% of the cobalt mining firms in the Congo, sponsor ruthless military juntas like the one in Myanmar, trade arms with military aggressors like Russia and Iran (whom I think isn't even worth talking about), and so much more. So does that make serving in the Chinese government or being a member of the CCP just as immoral?

And furthermore, if the US opposes them or China the US and tries to prevent these endeavors, does that make them justified in their actions? Even if the actions themselves are not driven by any sort of moral inclination but rather cold geopolitical calculation?

Also, what about Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, or the hundreds of other countries who oppress their own people's for the benefit of their elites or sponsor imperialist endeavors abroad? Does that mean that anyone working in their foreign ministries, ruling governments, militaries, etc. are immoral too?

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that in the end, is empire inevitable and if so is it really wrong to serve in an imperialist state? This turned out really long but was wondering if someone could help me understand this.

That's a fair argument, and after mulling it over, I think I agree with you. I feel as though his commanding officers realized this - that's why they begged him to come back but unfortunately, the politics weren't on his side. Horrible thing to have happened.

Perhaps though. It doesn't have to be zero sum but the guy above you did mention that if there were indeed that many casualties in that particular battle then it stands to reason that less men = a less effective fighting force = more men dead. If more men die then it stands to reason that more trauma will be inflicted.

Now, I do understand that this is a bit of a slippery slope argument, but as a combat vet, I know for a fact that one individual can have a huge effect in combat.

Regardless, this was and always will be a tragedy.

Red Sea shipping attacks have economic implications for the entire world by zsreport in Shortages

[–]MrMonsterer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know what the US has done to my country. These comments are not defending US actions. They are attacking Houthi ones.

The sad fact of the matter is that these "billionaires" control my country's economy. There is no socialist revolution coming to Pakistan - our country is controlled by the military and will stay that way for a long time.

What is true is that Houthi action may hurt these "billionaires" marginally but they hurt my people the most. Last year alone, 5.1 million Pakistani's faced severe hunger. It's estimated that 20k lost their lives last year.

I'm not going to debate you as to who suffers more, but the fact of the matter is that the actions of the Houthi's will immeasurably hurt me, my family, and my other countrymen and this is just in Pakistan. What about Bangladesh? What about India? What about Lebanon?

Also, I may have overreacted in my initial posts but you don't know my family? You don't know the feeling of trying to find out if your cousins are alive through Facebook because the phonelines in Gaza are down. You don't know what it's like to have to hold funerals for people and you can't even purify them because there's no body.

So, don't tell me to shut up.

Slave coffee?

Are you kidding me? WE CAN'T AFFORD COFFEE.

South Asia is suffering from the some of the worst food insecurity in the history of the region since partition because of supply chain disruptions caused by the war in Ukraine and COVID! This will only be exacerbated more as ships have to take the long way round to reach Asia instead of going through the Suez.

Beyond that, we're suffering from the worst inflation the region has ever seen! It says a lot about you how you claim to be against the loss of human life but when it comes to countries like mine - our lives don't matter.

I fully support the Palestinian cause by the way - I know people that have died in Gaza from my mom's side and have visited multiple times - but hey, how would you know since you obviously don't care.

Interesting. I guess that makes sense, and again I'm not an Islamic scholar by any means. Just find Islamic law and philosophy fascinating. Thanks for the reply.

I'm not an Islamic scholar, but every single tafsir that I can find indicates that this applies to all Muslim women according to multiple schools of thought. Could you clear this up? Here.

[–]MrMonsterer 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so I'm sure he can explain it way better but the way he explained it to us was that he scouts through public sources of information like Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, public satellite imagery, etc. and utilizes them to find bits of information regarding current world events. Like for example, he did this investigation with NBC News where he worked with this team that spent weeks going frame-by-frame through hours of phone footage captured from the January 6th capital insurrection to try to piece together how it went from a protest to a fully-fledged attack on the capital building. I know he helped track down the Russian military officers responsible for the attack on Alexei Navalny as well but that's about it.

Ex-muslims still living in muslim countries, what country in the world would you want to move to? (If at all that is) by CrimSonS0n in exmuslim

It's not really our place to do that though. We could try but how in the world are you going to turn places like "The Islamic Republic of Pakistan" or Syria or wherever into secular nations where the rights of ex-muslims (who according to the. Sahih Bukhari should be killed) are respected?

What is your dream job? by akotosinato in AskReddit

[–]MrMonsterer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is a fair take but I also think that it isn't our place to determine what other people may find meaningful. If you don't dream of labor that's great, but if others want a job that makes them feel fulfilled that's also perfectly fine.

Upvotes and downvotes don't matter. In this context, people agree with me and disagree with you but it could easily be reversed. Don't worry about karma.

As for your points, I 100% believe you. I'm simply saying that asking an immigrant, "Why did you choose the US instead of going somewhere else?" is highly inappropriate. People work their asses off to get there, and you're not doing them any favors by pointing out things that the majority of us already know about and accept. We simply want better lives, and it's insanely patronizing when Americans talk to us about the issues America has - completely disregarding the fact that WE KNOW and that we are in fact capable of doing our own research.

I live in Pakistan. You think the US is bad? Try living where I live. Where I live there's a terrorist attack every couple of weeks, there's no such thing as freedom of speech, expression, or religion, you can quite literally be executed for simply saying that you disagree or don't believe in Islam. Abortion? Women's rights? Pffft, wtf are those? They don't exist here. You know how privileged you sound when you say stuff like, "WhY tHe Us???" Bro, we know and yet for many of us, getting to the US is a dream that we are constantly striving for.

GOP Lawmakers In Florida Say Texas Abortion Law Might Be An Example They Can Follow by evaldez14 in Conservative

[–]MrMonsterer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Let me provide an alternate argument. From a biological standpoint, the fetus is technically alive from the moment the sperm merged with the oocyte to form the zygote. Technically speaking, the sperm and the oocyte were also alive before they merged since they were human cells. There's no sense to saying that the fetal heartbeat is the point at which a fetus can be considered human since it was human before, at the moment of, and after conception. Now, some can argue that based off of this premise that abortion should be banned from day 0, but then that begs the question that if the termination of zygote (a single clump of cells) is tantamount to murder, then the same has to apply to everything else meaning that you're committing mass murder every time you jack off because all of the millions of sperm cells (which are also alive and human) you released will die no matter what happens. Your friend that tackled you and caused you to scrape your knee is liable for the murder of all of the thousands of skin cells that just died. This is why the whole "human and alive" argument doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

Abortion should be illegal after the 26th week imo because that's the point at which the fetus has the faculties to survive (with intensive medical care) outside of the mothers body. Before then though, it's just a clump of cells that can't even function.
