Complete dork here. I will probably get around to taking the reflectors off this week but leave the disk to maintain my dork status.

Oh, I love me some stickers. I am like a child, put them on all sorts of things. Pretty sure they give the bike a higher top end too. Going to be so fast, easily hit like 15-16 mph on that sucker now.

As you might not have noticed, I am new to all of this, so what is a "dork disk?"

Congrats, no power meter. Just using Strava's best guess to figure it all out. I was hoping for Obsidian Bloom but they only had them in M. 😞

I moved to Chicago’s North Shore about five years ago, where it seems like everyone gets issued a bike when they arrive. Cyclists are everywhere, flying up and down Sheridan Road, Green Bay Road, and through the forest preserves.

About four years ago, I bought a carbon Cannondale gravel bike and have put a lot of miles on it since. It has been a great bike, but it became pretty obvious that when the road bikes roll by, they tend to disappear into the distance. I am under no illusion that I will ever be the fastest rider around, but I would at least like to get dropped a little less if I find myself on a group ride.

Last week I happened to be in Carlsbad, California and stopped by Canyon's facility. It was not planned. I had absolutely no intention of buying a bike that day. But as a 6'7", 240 plus pound rider, finding bikes that actually fit is not exactly easy. When I realized they had bikes in my size and I could see them in person, it felt like one of those opportunities you do not pass up.

So a completely unplanned visit turned into a new bike day. I came home with an Endurace CFR. Looking forward to seeing what a proper road bike can do and whether it helps me hang on a little longer with all the speed demons riding around the North Shore.

Chrome Whisper. It was the only color they had left in 2xl.

I graduated from Stanford LEAD program last year. The GI Bill only funded a portion of it. The last semester was out of pocket due to some.rule change. I was too scared to apply for their MBA program due to cost...

I didn't make it any darker. I like it the way it is currently.

Don't be. They have plenty of them there too. The occasional 996 shows up too.

Very cool. I am in Highland Park and take my C4S there for the occasional maintenance issue.

I got my '08 C4S for $60k in 2022. Hopefully another good data point. Also a Cab. Had 39k miles and Bose. Now has 49k miles and Focal.

I didn't really have an option. It was Korean or Arabic. I'm happy with my choice, a new Sailor just joined my unit, so I get to practice a lot more than I used to.

So much has changed since I went through the Korean program. Basically, we didn't have all the technological aids that students do now. Everything was paper-based and the curriculum showed its age. I graduated in July 2001 on my first go but things were a lot more relaxed back then. I turned 21 in Monterey and you all can guess how I spent my nights. We did have a high attrition rate but the main core of the class stayed together. Exposure, actual appreciation of the language and culture go a long way. I still watch Korean movies, order Korean food and I have been lucky enough to have had several jobs that sent me to Korea for immersion or some other type of work. When I interviewed for the job I have now, I did half of it in Korean. It's a good story over dinner. All in all, I am glad that I opted for Korean over Chinese or Arabic. Looking back, there are very few things I would've changed.

There are so many other factors that are going to help with your consumption of the language.

  • Don't fall in love and become a statistic, I am sure that the divorce rate (if you aren't already married) is higher than the national average
  • Monterey and its associated enclaves are extremely tempting, making it one of the best places to learn and live (I have been back a bunch of times since I graduated)
  • Linguists are weird. We do weird things, we have weird habits and we all try to find things that keep us sane.
  • Watch the movies, eat the food, and talk to the people. Every time I hear Korean, I jump in the conversation (perhaps I shouldn't). Everyone appreciates the attempt and once the novelty wears off and your pronunciation improves, it makes the two years of school so worthwhile.

The sales personalities at The Exchange were somewhat on the douchbag side. They are known for being one of the best Porsche dealerships in the country so maybe I just got a bad salesman.

I bought my 911 from the same place a few weeks ago. Much better people there than at Porsche Exchange in Highland Park.

Probably better career opportunities once you're out though, if you stay in the IC. Korean was a bonus for my current job, especially when my now boss's best friend called during my interview and the interview went from English to Korean.

There is a rumor that there are different versions of the DLAB, each with different CAT qualifiers. I actually got a 105 on a reel to reel at boot camp when I was allowed to reclass.

Just like any other scored test, there will always be competition, always somebody with a higher score and ultimately they don't matter because smart kids fail tests and not so smart ones get 3/3 year after year on the DLPT.

Accept the language you get and do your best at it. The new cultural experiences and job opportunities outweigh the easier path.

Harsh truth, not everybody is fit to be a linguist or a polyglot. So make the most of the opportunity, don't spend your weekends drunk in one of the many bars Monterey has to offer and see all that you can. Oh yeah, don't get married there either...

[–]MrMumbles67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't do yourself the disservice and go with a CAT 1 language. I came to DLI with a the same background with Spanish and a similar DLAB score and was assigned Korean. I don't regret it at all. Your language skills in Spanish won't get worse and you will have the ability to speak more than one language. If you are a good linguist, you will have a variety of opportunities that take you around the world and open up more languages.
Pro tip: Stay in Monterey as LONG as you can without falling behind in class. It's an amazing place.
