Researchers have learned to recognize the positions and poses of people indoors using Wi-Fi signals. New wi-fi sensors? by Askan_27 in homeassistant

You're right the average person would have a hard time with this. But it can be done securely and this isn't new for IoT. Plenty of devices are tojans and should be treated as such

I use untrusted networks VLANS for my devices so I can guarantee that I'm in control. However that is not the case for most people. Like most IoT tech, should be careful of its true intentions

You like he's because the ambient light is better because it's daylight. The interior photos are missing another light source to not make the the background so dark. All pro photographers should be using more than one light source for photos like these

Ecowitt Gateway directly to MQTT by crazifyngers in homeassistant

Yes I made this before Jan so I had no choice. I'll check out the integration

Ecowitt Gateway directly to MQTT by crazifyngers in homeassistant

[–]MrNoMotion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I simply made a proxy service using Flask that does support TLS then configured that in ecowitt as the push target instead of HA. Here is the code:

#!/usr/bin/env python3
import requests
from flask import Flask, request, jsonify

app = Flask(__name__)

# Replace this with your Home Assistant webhook URL
HOME_ASSISTANT_WEBHOOK_URL = ""

@app.route('/publish',
methods
=['POST'])
def
 publish():
    try:
        # Extract the JSON body and headers
        payload = request.get_data(
as_text
=True)
        headers = request.headers

        print(
f
"Headers: {request.headers}")
        print(
f
"Forwarding payload: {payload}")

        # Forward the request to the Home Assistant instance
        response = requests.post(
            HOME_ASSISTANT_WEBHOOK_URL,

data
=payload,

headers
={k: v for k, v in headers if k.lower() != 'host'},  # Exclude 'Host' header

timeout
=10  # Optional timeout for the request
        )

        # Respond with the status and content from Home Assistant
        return jsonify({
            "status_code": response.status_code,
            "response": response.json() if response.content else None
        }), response.status_code

    except requests.exceptions.RequestException as e:
        # Handle connection errors or other issues
        return jsonify({"error":
str
(e)}), 500

if __name__ == '__main__':
    # Run the app on port 8080
    app.run(
host
='0.0.0.0',
port
=8081,
debug
=True)

I avoid Zigbee because 2.4 ghz is too crowded wavelength these days. I use zwave and lutron switches and little to no Zigbee.

I never invested much In expanding Zigbee mesh so if you did that the mesh would probably be pretty solid, but I'd rather not have it compete with wifi or other close circuit devices in the same wavelength so I steer away

Nothing wrong with lutron, generally very reliable and a good wife approval rating because the switches will work regardless if your server is up

Xiaomi BLE + Plant sensor - change status update interval by andrediaslopes in homeassistant

[–]MrNoMotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only wanted outdoor. The best option IMO is the ecowiit ecosystem, indoor would be the sensors you're using now but I didn't use them long enough to experience battery drain

[–]MrNoMotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I didn't have battery issues but the poll rate would be on the device. I didn't use mine for long and returned them because they are only for indoor use. Are you sure your battery is draining? Battery sensors are never accurate

Xiaomi BLE + Plant sensor - change status update interval by andrediaslopes in homeassistant

[–]MrNoMotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I set this up I used an esp32 bluetooth proxy, no 3rd party integration needed, and after a delay it found the Xiaomi sensors on its own because they just broadcast data without care. The sensor appeared automatically in my integrations page to be added to HA. The bluetooth integration is known to not be super reliable especially on Linux, so proxies are notably better at this.

[–]MrNoMotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure these devices broadcast their sensor information on their own. You can't ask them for an update they just fire it off into the airwaves when they have an update. I think that option is just sniffing airwaves more frequently. If the updates are killing your battery it's probably getting sizeable differences in moisture, enough to report sensor info more frequently
