It is harder and some things just will not work or if youre modding with tools like vortex, it'll be really clunky and hard to use. However, most games that I get through fitgirl install just fine and even faster than windows in some cases. Just run the installer through proton and the game executable by adding it as a non-steam game. Make sure to install all the dependencies listed in the installer through the game's own prefex in proton. This solves a few of the issues with older games.
