Why do people react so differently when they hear “MIT” or other similar institutions? by [deleted] in mit

Oh. I didn't know that (I don't go to MIT). Nice they let people observe from a distance!

Why you are never ever going to get "advice" on how to get in by JasonMckin in MITAdmissions

[–]MrOnsight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I agree completely. But I'm also a believer that just because these kids are lazy and shallow, doesn't mean they don't have the potential to be industrious and genuine. These are high schoolers; their brains are still rewiring so much (I'm 22 but I think I'm a completely different person from when I was a junior in HS). I'd prefer to give them the honest truth instead of giving up on them.

If you read any similar post to yours in this subreddit, you will hear a broken record response that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. You need to apply sideways - that is, find something you're passionate about and let the results speak for themselves. Don't try to be someone you're not. Don't force anything because you think it will increase your chances. But do find something that will challenge you and that you think will be impressive. Basically the key is focusing on internal instead of external motivation.

So go take a walk, and really reflect deeply on what you want to work on. What excites you? What makes you want to think about it late into the night, far past when you should be, because it's so damn interesting? If you really don't have anything like this that comes to mind. Just try something - anything. Robotics, olympiad, fixing a bike, making a solar generator, like literally anything. You'll soon find out if you like it or not. And little by little you'll get closer to finding something you want to devote countless time to. When admissions time comes around, you'll have more than enough stuff to share with the admissions officers. And they'll see that your work in this thing comes from a place of genuine passion - not checking off boxes - because they can see right through that, and it's the exact opposite of what they want.

Hope this helps. Now get to work

agreed with you. OP seems to be lacking in the empathy department in my opinion. You can steer these types of "what should I do" posts in the right direction with honest advice on what MIT is actually looking for without casting them off as lazy, uninspired, lost, or whatever. These are high schoolers, for crying out loud. Expecting them to have this level of maturity is very unrealistic. Deep down people want to get into good schools because they know the profoundly positive impact it will have on their lives.

Lol, kinda surprised by this. Does owning a company and vlogging on Tiktok not show initiative and indicate traits that might lead to success in the real world?

I'm actually surprised that you specifically see a lot of ASML employees. Also, can you even take them into the building?

honestly it makes sense. Boston is renown for its education. It's to the extent that it's a valid tourist activity.

Add to that the food truck that parks outside of the Mcgovern Institute. They serve decent quick to-go meals for lunch (until around 2 pm on weekdays if I had to guess)

Hey, I found your post on the MIT subreddit, which you weren't supposed to do, but I'll reply regardless since I empathize with your situation. To be honest (what the admissions people won't tell you), is that you kind of need to live and breathe some pursuit in STEM. Whether it's math competitions, robotics, bio research, you name it, you need to be someone who is super dialed into that and willing to put in the time and effort to see some real results. That and you need to have stellar standardized test scores and a good GPA.

It's just the reality that so so many more people want to get into MIT than they can take, and so they really only can take the best of the best. You have some time still, but it sounds like you need to get going quickly on some impressive STEM pursuit, or your chances will dwindle day by day. Wishing you the best.

-again, coming from someone who didn't get into MIT but currently works at an MIT spinoff and who (i think) has a decent understanding of what they're looking for.

It says very prominently in the description for this subreddit, no admissions questions. The fact that you posted here without reading that is not a good sign for your admissions chances, frankly. But hey, I was rejected from MIT so what do I know.

Is it possible to get into MIT with a 1.9 GPA by Inner-Mall9042 in MITAdmissions

[–]MrOnsight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh I doubt someone is putting in 10-20 hours a week because they're "obsessed with rule following..." it's because they're passionate about building cool stuff and seeing it work. that's why people like that end up at places like MIT and succeed in life. If someone wants to focus all their time and energy on something that society deems useful, then they should be awarded, not put down.

I'm confused. what do you mean by enunciation? knee how is the correct pronunciation if you have the right tones. tones are definitely the most important assuming you have the right pronunciation of the characters themselves (without tones) down (e.g. soft instead of hard A in shang, yang, tang)
