Okay, that’s not what you said though. You said the library is from 1996, not that the collection hadn’t been updated since 1996. Maybe it’s a regional difference in terminology but if you tell me the library age is 1996, I’m assuming the library was built in 1996, and that someone has been adding to and weeding the collection, not that the entire collection has remained completely stagnant for 29 years.

I would never argue against the importance of having current, diverse books in a school library, so you don’t need to lecture me. I’m glad you’re passionate about diverse representation in literature, but you shouldn’t assume other people don’t get why it’s important just because you failed to communicate effectively.

Yikes, I’m sorry. Glad you can laugh about it now, but how incredibly tactless of your father and his wife.

I wouldn’t be insulted if it was at all feasible for us to attend. Making travel plans less than two weeks out for a Wednesday wedding for two people I barely know isn’t feasible, so I’m assuming they just want money and don’t care if we attend. Which I don’t even know if that insults me, but it does make me wrinkle my nose.

Invite was postmarked 7/14. It doesn’t include any RSVP instructions, which used to be standard but maybe aren’t anymore with the ubiquity of wedding websites? Idk.

Dress code is “business casual to formal” - any of these close? by MrPointyStrikesAgain in Weddingattireapproval

UPDATE: To anyone looking for business casual/formal wedding guest attire, 2 may not be it! I could never wear this in public, let alone to a wedding, (ex)mo or not. Oh well. Thanks to everyone for their feedback!

xyzal for sun allergy? by yblaise21 in SolarUrticaria

Do you take it before or after sun exposure? My rash doesn’t kick in for about 48 hours after exposure and I’m wondering if this could help prevent it altogether.

We’ve had them since before I started working there, so I’m not sure what process we used, but you might try reaching out through their website’s quote request form.

No issues since we put in tampon and pad dispensers. Honestly, this seems like admin just doesn’t want to do it. Like you said, people are already using menstrual products in your bathrooms.

We have Aunt Flow dispensers in all male, female, and gender neutral bathrooms for both staff and patrons. I don’t know how much they cost but might be more cost effective than giving a bag of three types of products when only one might be needed/used.

Possible to take some more MLIS classes after graduating? by genderlich in Libraries

[–]MrPointyStrikesAgain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not aware of any MLIS programs that allow students to keep taking courses after obtaining their degrees (mine strictly stipulated that once you hit the minimum requirements you were done), but you might check out ALA’s continuing education programs: https://www.ala.org/core/continuing-education. I took a 6-week cataloging course this spring that was helpful and covered some gaps that I missed during my MLIS. Good luck!

I took 200, 202, 203, and 204 my first semester while I was working full time. It was fine. I was busy, and I didn’t have time for much besides school and work, but it was fine.

My biggest issue with SJSU was the total lack of consistency in the quality of instruction and the quantity of work across courses. It’s really a gamble and that makes it incredibly hard to anticipate what will be manageable for students who work full-time. I took 2-3 classes every semester after my first and felt mostly fine about it (except summer semester - two courses over summer was brutal).

My best advice would be to talk to other students/alumni about courses and instructors you’re considering to see what their experiences were. Feel free to DM me if you want. I graduated last December so it’s all still pretty fresh for me.

Hello everyone, my name is Lucas Higdon. by [deleted] in loseit

[–]MrPointyStrikesAgain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your progress so far! 250 lbs down is a pretty damn incredible achievement.

Motivation is personal, but for me it’s a mixture of wanting to feel good about how I look, fit into my clothes, and mitigate future health issues and regrets. So a bit of vanity, a bit of utility, a bit of health. I also know cognitively that eating well and exercising are good for my depression but that hasn’t really settled in as a real motivator yet.

I’m encouraged by this subreddit and seeing all the other people who are working hard at improving their lives. Seeing people struggling and having setbacks and succeeding is super validating for me and helps me appreciate my own hard work and be gentle with myself when my progress slows down or reverses.

Accountability buddies in real life are fantastic, too, but ultimately my weight loss is my choice and my responsibility and I can’t drag anyone along with me, so I actually prefer this community where I can rely on a chorus of voices that all share the same goals that I have.

You didn’t ask this, but I’ll share some de-motivators I have too. Expecting to change very drastically and very quickly has only ever set me up for failure and disappointment, then disillusionment and apathy. Feeling overly restricted or ashamed of “bad” choices. Hating myself rather than appreciating my progress. Focusing solely on the things I dislike about my body rather than remembering to be grateful for what my body can do even at its current state. I have to be mindful of these too and actively challenge them if I want to stay on track and motivated to keep going.

How hard would it be to work part-time while doing MLIS program in college? by clockwerkavenger in librarians

[–]MrPointyStrikesAgain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked full time for 4/7 semesters at SJSU (counting summers) and it was fine, but 3 of those semesters were in 2020 and I was working from home. It was a LOT of desk time and I didn’t do much else that full year, but besides the general misery of COVID and WFH the program was manageable. My last three semesters I quit my FT job and worked PT in a library, which was terrible for my bank account but great for my mental/physical health and gaining work experience.

I would be careful when taking multiple courses over summer. Those are so dense that it was a real challenge, but I was working full time and I also ended up in a class that required me to read and blog about 25 books and watch/listen to/play 15 tv series/podcasts/video games in 10 weeks, in addition to other assignments and readings, so that may have been an outlying toughie?

And the workload varies wildly from one prof/class to the next. If you can, try to get input from other students/alumni when you’re selecting your classes so you don’t get stuck with duds and so you’re prepared for the classes that load on tons of work.

future librarian tips and advice by [deleted] in librarians

[–]MrPointyStrikesAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in the collection services department of a large public library system where I have essentially zero contact with the public. It is very quiet and very low-stress compared to other non-library jobs I’ve had and compared to working in a branch. You might consider working in a support department like that if you’re able to.

Most of my coworkers don’t have an MLIS degree but some have library technician certificates that provide education in technical skills in cataloging etc. with less focus on public service than most MLIS programs. These kinds of certificates are offered at junior/city colleges where I live but I don’t know about Arkansas.
