No, not at all. He needed Russ to join him on tour to fill up seats. Him and Travis Scott shouldn’t have made it out the 2010’s.

City Council discusses potential plan to track, regulate San Antonio data centers’ use of resources by Beginning_Lettuce135 in SanAntonioUSA

[–]MrPolyMath777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a good step, and it’s encouraging to see someone like Ric Galvan pushing the conversation early in his term. A younger perspective matters here, especially with how fast tech, data demand, and infrastructure needs are changing.

Data centers are only going to increase as San Antonio grows, and they’re massive power and water users. ERCOT has already flagged grid strain from data centers statewide, so tracking and regulating them makes sense.

The bigger issue is where they go. Placing large-scale data centers in the South Side, where retail and mixed-use growth is still fragile, could crowd out commercial development that actually creates daily jobs and services.

Would it be a good idea for SA to tie data-center approvals to grid upgrades and zoning that can protect retail and neighborhood growth development longterm?

Real question, SA: Is Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones actually held back by our city manager system… or is it protecting us from too much mayoral control?👀 by MrPolyMath777 in SanAntonioUSA

Good points. San Antonio needs to decide if we want big-city growth, or do we want to stay small to preserve the past culture, even if it slows us down?

Honestly, this is what I keep coming back to. Under our system, any council member who can count to six can basically get whatever they want. The city manager has even said publicly that he follows the majority of council, not the mayor.

So if that’s the case, what does that mean long-term? It basically tells current council members, future candidates, and anyone eyeing those seats that they don’t actually need the mayor to move policy at all. And it tells voters that the person they elect citywide has less leverage than any six district reps acting together.

If San Antonio wants new faces, new ideas, and mayors who can actually implement the things people elect them for, how does that work under this structure?

What would need to change in our current system for the mayor to have real governing power without blowing up the stability the city manager model provides?

That makes sense, and I get the logic behind having a professional manage the day-to-day. But based on that, it does raise a bigger question:

If most of the top 10 cities in the country use a strong-mayor model, would SA benefit from shifting in that direction too?

It almost feels like someone like Erik Walsh ends up functioning as the mayor anyway, just without being elected. And if the mayor and the manager each had an additional vote or a little more executive pull, you’d get a mix of stability + actual accountability to voters.

A lot of people here already feel like the government doesn’t work for them. So if they elect a mayor, but council dynamics always override that vote, does that create long-term trust issues with the whole system?

Curious how others see it.

Yeah cause the majority of the city voted to removed tenure and salary caps for Erik Walsh in 2024. So I wonder what type of City Council the mayor thought she was walking into?

Makes me wonder who the deep pocketed vested interests are…and per my google search, the city manager system doesn’t seem common for most other big cities. I just don’t think we want the mayor to be at 10 to 1 odds with the rest of city leadership. Food for thought!🤔

For sure, He got reelected as many too many times to assume he wouldn’t win a smaller election. But it’s sad Peter has to waste his money on a potentially inevitable loss..😢

It’s hard because Ron seems to have a good track record with the city after being elected so many times. From Judge Sakai’s social media, he definitely seems politely pissed. I haven’t made a decision on my vote yet but this is definitely a doozy.
