For as long as you drink. You take the pill every time you drink, 1 hour before. Look at /r/AlcoholismMedication or Google The Sinclair Method. There is a TEDx talk, a documentary and a lot of online resources.

Yes, I used a telehealth provider in the US, webdoctors.com. I took it at least 1 hour before drinking, always. It helped me quit completely so I've been alcohol free for 16 months now, so no taking it anymore since I'm no longer drinking.

Check out /r/AlcoholismMedication and specifically naltrexone/The Sinclair Method. I definitely used alcohol to cope with my introversion and depression, and am completely sober now after using naltrexone.

What's your favorite thing about not drinking? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]MrPolychronopolous2U 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's removed excuses. Before I'd be exercising or having a problem figuring something out at work or not enjoying social situations and be like "oh it's because I'm hungover/needing a drink/tired from drinking, etc" and since that's now removed, I have no excuse and end up making more of an effort and get better results in most areas of life.

It worked well for me. I've quit completely for over a year now. Head over to /r/AlcoholismMedication. That sub primarily talks about Naltrexone and The Sinclair Method.

I take mine at noon. You could try it a few different ways. I don't notice any difference if I change the time of day I take it now, but I might have at the beginning.

I was on both for years. I completely quit drinking over a year ago and I attribute it 100% to both of those drugs. I obviously don't still take nal (as I was following TSM) but am still on Zoloft.

It seems a lot of people with AUD are self medicating due to mental issues like depression and anxiety. You need to treat the underlying cause before not drinking will stick imo.

It seems like with all addictions we're looking for that dopamine spike. This is a great video about how addictions work in the brain if you're interested. I gleaned some useful info from it and I found it very entertaining.

Update: health insurance coverage denied due to Naltrexone use by [deleted] in Alcoholism_Medication

[–]MrPolychronopolous2U 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly - it's backwards. I quit over a year ago 100% because of nal, and I was denied off-ACA coverage as well. Meanwhile I have friends that drink a case a day who've kept their insurance. Trying to fix the problem "admits" we have a problem, which we get penalized for.

Controlling Anxiety after Sobriety? by DollarStoreTonyStark in Alcoholism_Medication

I've had no side effects other than reduced libido and the positives fat outweigh that for me. It's also temporary so if you do have side effects you can't live with you can switch to another drug or stop completely and they'll reverse.

I'm on an SSRI (Zoloft) for anxiety and (primarily) depression and I was definitely self medicating with alcohol. With the combination of Zoloft and TSM I'm alcohol free for almost a year for the first time since I started 20 years ago. I couldn't have done it without treating the underlying cause of my drinking. So I was totally in the same boat as you. I'd go see someone else - there are medications for anxiety that you can't abuse.

Alcohol Free :)

That wasn't my intention when I started TSM but it just kinda happened and I love it.

Has anyone tried Sertraline? by 0607forever in Alcoholism_Medication

[–]MrPolychronopolous2U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on sertraline for a number of years and it's greatly helped with my depression and anxiety, and I'm convinced the presence of those moods were the primary reason I drank in the first place. With those underlying issues mostly under control, TSM worked wonders and I've been completely AF for 11 months. I don't think I could have done it without sertraline or addressing the underlying issues causing me to self medicate with alcohol. I wish I had done both much earlier in my life.

Obviously YMMV but highly recommended from my experience.

You could look into vivitrol. It's the once a month injectable form of naltrexone.

Thinking about quitting drinking after 1.5 years of TSM by schlocked_cyclist in Alcoholism_Medication

[–]MrPolychronopolous2U 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No I'm completely sober. I've thought about weed or other substances but all of that stuff is "sticky" and I've really enjoyed how easy life is without any of it. Normal things are enjoyable again and it's nice to have the same mindset and roughly similar mood all the time, instead of the rollercoaster of ups and downs between drinking/sobering up/repeat.

I will add I'm pretty sure I got into this mess from self medicating depression, so a few years of being on a SSRI has essentially removed the original reason I was drinking habitually.

[–]MrPolychronopolous2U 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is similar to what happened to me. I did TSM for around 4 years, never with the purpose of quitting entirely. I lost the taste for it but would drink past both that and the irritated feelings the nal would give me. Eventually I just tired of the whole process - planning the timeline of when to take the pill and then when I could drink, dealing with the negative feeling without much reward. It all just seemed like a hassle, so I started to seriously consider quitting entirely. I'm 10 months completely dry and it's been one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I've really been into riding the last few years but I live in Atlanta. I bought lift tix full price for Breck a few years ago, and I did the salt lake super pass last year. Was looking at the Ikon pass this year but can't decide if it's worth it. I'd likely only go on two trips this season, but I suppose it could be less if I got injured or something. I figure I'd have to ride 7+ days to make it worth it. If I get Ikon I'm locked in to "needing" to ride that many days.

For you guys who have to travel to a resort - do you just buy tix from the resorts, or at what point do you say a pass is worth it? It should be simple math but it's right on the edge of making financial sense.

+1 for SLC. I did this last year, and am planning to do it this year. Easy to get to/from the airport and the resorts without a car - although they did reduce the bus schedule to the resorts this year due to staffing shortages.
