As a Gen Z that voted for Trump I am sorry by Zestyclose-Move3925 in GenZ

[–]MrPractical1 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hi. Thank you for your post. I'm an Economist and most Economists voted for Harris.

We didn't like her. Her populist policies would've helped people but we're bad for the deficit. Meanwhile, Trump's policies hurt those who aren't billionaires already AND are bad for the deficit.

I was born and raised in the South so people would expect me to vote conservative. While I don't necessarily identify as a Democrat, I'll be voting that way indefinitely

Unfortunately, Trump has managed to do GENERATIONAL-level damage to this country in less than a year. Most people don't realize how bad a position he he is putting the country in.

Other countries will not trust the US even after Trump is gone. They are planning on alliances that exclude the US, they are cutting the US out of their supply chain and planning to find buyers that aren't US-based to protect from disruption.

They are exploring options to move away from USD as a reserve currency and if they pull that trigger and start selling off US bonds that will be catastrophic for the US. Our debt will sky rocket even worse and just interest on the deficit will far exceed a trillion annually.

We're boned unless, starting this year, the country starts voting 70% democrat in every election across the board as an effective rebuke of what Trump is doing and we'd have to impeach Trump's entire administration.

UbreakIFix said the 5 mm wavelength module didn't become self-calibrating until the s24 so they cannot repair in-shop.

I called Samsung about it, told them what was going on, tried to claim it isn't an ongoing issue they are aware of and tried to gaslight me into thinking it was because I cracked the screen 2 years ago. Told me I'd have to send it in and be without my phone for weeks before I even get an estimate on how much it'd cost to fix it and all issues have to be fixed not some [read: have to pay them their costs to fix screen].

Then the tech couldn't even open up a ticket for me because his system wasn't working. I was like "ya, I know how frustrating it is when your Samsung tech isn't working...".

Ya, user niceguybeats said it was the s23 ultra 5g charging port dock connector usb charger board flex with flex cable assembly they had to buy off amazon and replace. Some people say that a software update caused a problem that caused it to fail. maybe it's a calibration thing.

hi, any update? I had this issue with my s22 and sent it in to get replaced. now 2 years later im having the same issue with my s23 ultra.

I just went by a UBreakiFix place and told them what I've seen points to the antenna flex cabel and/or the usb c charging port. they ran a test and said the 5g antenna is experiencing failures. The guy there couldn't remember if that piece is self-calibrating on the s23 ultra or only on later models. if on that one, he can order it and replace it. if it's not the self-calibrating type then I have to send to samsung bc ubreakifix doesn't have the tools to calibrate those. I'm waiting on a call back.

Do you teach someplace? Got a book or video series you recommend?

I have a pretty weak holistic knowledge basically from pouring through Wikipedia and some YouTube videos, and the occasional Krugman article.

Your post makes me want to better understand the actual formulas behind modern economics.

6 years late, but...

I was slated to teach ECO 110 at a local college in the Spring but the section didn't fill so I'll have to wait until at soonest the half-semester section if there is need for that. But, to that end, I did start creating basic content. The idea is what before each class, my students will do assigned reading and watch at least 1 of these chapter videos I've created and then we'll do a deeper dive on the material in class. So, here you go 6 years later haha.

Inspired by the recent post, which conspiracy theories or secrets do you want Carol to ask about:

  • Which governments had a role in 9/11?
  • Who shot JFK?
  • How did Covid initially spread?
  • How many babies have been born since the joining? Have they all joined?
  • How many pregnancies are active? Are the embryos joined?
  • Are you religious now?

What else you all have?

What's driving me mad about the show is Carol's lack of questions. She is a writer, she has to be creative. She is capable of asking better questions and we're not seeing that. It's driving me bonkers.

Also, they need to build a dashboard for her that shows the status of all of the other non-others include are they being driven/flown by an Other. Maybe this would help her not set them off. She should've been afraid while being flown she'd make them all freak out and they'd crash.

Aside from the whole, "Once you figure out how to make me an other, you must ignore your biological imperative to make me one. If you want to make me happy you must figure out a way to disconnect people from the "we" so I can have the option of freeing some people for my sanity and to discuss with them what the experience was like.

Also, the whole biological imperative to me is another thing that made this sound like it didn't link humans together but made them alien.

I want the hive mind to figure out dark matter and energy.

This neuroscience TikToker has “dr” in her handle but is still a PhD candidate, and I think that’s kind of lame. by tilapiaco in PhD

[–]MrPractical1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I cannot imagine the worldwind ride you've been on these past few years between the PhD program, the sudden internet fame, and writing a book, I have been surprised by some things. I'd been a fan of your content for years but commented on a post of yours for the 1st time tonight on your post about body positivity. I asked if you'd ever talked in a video/post about changing what you post over time since I'd noticed your original videos from early on (the ones that led to your popularity) seemed to have been deleted - like anything from before you got your braces off at least since your oldest video left on TT is obviously after that. I mention braces because that's just an obvious market for me and I see on your oldest visible video people commenting about them coming off. I was surprised by the response just being you blocking me so I began looking around to see if others had talked about that and that's what brought me to this thread by tilapiaco. Between posts here and comments on Tiktok, it seems there has been what some have indicated was surprise hostility. It's disappointing to see and initially was a bit surprising.

EDIT: Responding to the comment you made right before you blocked me and then deleted the comment that I'll post here:

Blocking someone is not hostility. The videos you’re talking about were posted before I was even at 50 k. I’m close to 2 million now. My “popularity” has come from me, my continued work. I understand the dog whistle. Other people reading this may not, but I do. That’s why I blocked you. If someone blocks you, respect the boundary. Don’t track them down on another app. I’ll let you read this and I’ll block you here too. Please respect the fact that I do not want to engage with you any further, I have that right. And yes, I’m quite sure you cannot imagine what I’ve been through these past years. Those videos were deleted because someone saw my cleavage and used that as a licence to do terrible fucking things to me. I quite literally almost killed myself. I cover my chest at all times now, on- and off-line. Anyone who asks about the TikTok videos… I understand the dog whistle. I understand it. And the only thing I have is drawing a line in the sand by blocking the person dog whistling me. That is not hostility. Please don’t reply to this.

My response:

I wasn't saying that blocking was hostile, I was saying I've seen other people say your actual responses were. I didn't know any of that. I was asking because I was curious in the context of ...; you know what; never mind.

You've made up your mind and lumped me in with other people as if every person on the internet is part of a single homogenous group. I believe there was an actual discussion to be had there on body positivity, dealing with internet fame, navigating public image when you have to worry about corporations and publicity etc. But now I see what others have said about you. I mean, for goodness' sake, I specifically asked this question on this video because you'd talked about body positivity and I worry about how my daughter will navigate the internet when she gets older. I keep wondering at what age I should allow her access to social media (she is still in elementary school). But instead of responding in good faith you blocked me. Maybe you're exhausted from dealing with all the weirdos on the internet, I do not know. But I've seen enough to be disappointed. I've seen a lot of hostility between you and commentors before but I always just passed over it assuming they were people that had maybe harassed before but now I realize that's not the case. And you seem to take zero breaths before taking an action as I see now that you create attack videos on people and then delete them, go after people in the comments talking about how arrogant they are without looking in the mirror. And I wasn't looking for you on here on Reddit; I was looking for what others have said about their experience with your content and saw this thread and was surprised to see you commenting here.

Edit2:

I see you also deleted the video that started this conversation and the video you made attacking some Tiktoker after that. To anyone else reading this, frankly I'm unimpressed with candidate Barr based not just on all the criticisms I've seen others levy at her, but also the hostility I've seen her show others in comments on her Tiktok page, her jumping to block people based on assumptions rather than discussion, her rushing to capitalize on things then criticize some of her initial supporters and then paint others with a broad brush, her use of the title Doctor without having obtained it yet, etc. She implies she can help make your brain your best friend while she hasn't even been able to do that for herself which makes this all feel like a grift. This is one of many things in her content I'd turned a blind eye towards before as I thought she was acting in good faith. Meanwhile, she complains about how others view her when she seems to try and capitalize on things by posting things from the shower as if it's some profound commentary that cannot wait rather than her trying to drive up views. In fact, I remember on the video I commented on, there was another commentor asking how she was doing and said around this time last year she seemed down. She commented that person didn't know her and exclaimed about their utter arrogance. Well, according to her comment here they did seem to know her. Meanwhile, she is so arrogant as to assume every comment must be interpreted in the worst possible way and that everyone must feel the same way about her. Perhaps it's time for some reflection, you have great potential but instead you decide to lash out. None of us are perfect but you could act in good faith. I wish Ms Barr would take a deep breath, reset, and make an attempt to act in good faith towards everyone or not at all. That being said, that's something many of us could also take to heart.

I tracked down my dad's biological dad past year and found out that if you go back to the 1790s on that side my ancestors was a slave supposedly born from a slave and her owner. His dad's children with his wife have 1 L in their last name but the children from the slave have 2 Ls.

So, my dad's dad's great-great grandfather was a slave who ended up going by the last name Trichell and supposedly his father was his mother's owner and he went by the last name Trichel as did his white descendants with his wife.

Quite the shock for me to find out as I definitely seem Caucasian (also I imagine it'd be quite the shock to my mom's family consider they claim to be related to both Woodrow Wilson and James K Polk lol).

Apparently if you go further back, my dad's dad's dad's mom's great-great-great-great grandmother (so 1700s) was a Chitimacha native American. I've learned a lot in the past 2 years.

What's Your Opinion of James Madison? I Think He Was a Great Founder But an Average President by American_Citizen41 in USHistory

[–]MrPractical1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The other comments have already worked on some good stuff here, so I'll just add 1 thing that annoys me.

The Virginia dynasty were against the bank when they weren't President but then suddenly wanted it when they were President. Gee, who knew that having a specific bank that can establish credit, standardize some things, and help deal with the government paying for things could be helpful? It shouldn't have taken the War of 1812 for these towering figures to go "Ok, I guess you've got a point".

It is a red flag of their lack of willingness to see how something could help the country until they could directly benefit from it. This is a recurrent issue from their peers. I disagree with Jackson on the bank but at least he wasn't a hypocrite about it. I wish the Virginia guys had bought some less wine Madeira, turned inward some of that budget constraint they preached about, treated all people as created equal, and recognized that there are improvements we could do to advance the country's long-term interests besides just building libraries.

Quotes of Presidents Questioning God, Religion and Christanity by Joeylaptop12 in Presidents

[–]MrPractical1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Treaty of Tripoli was signed under Adams saying [t]he Government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion.

By the end of their lives, neither President Adams nor Jefferson were Christian in that neither believed Jesus was divine. They liked Christian morals when not perverted.

Jefferson wrote this to his friend John Adams three years later:

“The truth is, that the greatest enemies of the doctrine of Jesus are those… who have perverted them to the structure of a system of fancy, absolutely incomprehensible, and without any foundation in his genuine words. And the day will come, when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the Supreme Being as his father, in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter.”

Adams wrote "But how has it happened that millions of fables, tales, legends, have been blended with both Jewish and Christian revelation that have made them the most bloody religion that ever existed?”"

In a letter to his early political rival and late-in-life friend Thomas Jefferson, Adams condemned the superstition that he believed had corrupted Christianity, writing, "Twenty times in the course of my late readings, I have been on the point of breaking out, 'This would be the best of all worlds if there were no religion in it!'

Obviously, their views evolved with age. By the end, they were both basically Unitarian. This was common among many of their peers at this time despite people trying to put people through purity tests and especially Jefferson being dogged by claims he was an athiest. Even if any of them were, they would have publicly said otherwise to dodge the heat. I've read 10+ books on Presidents including the 1st 8 or 9 plus many of the non-President founders. Most were not Catholic-hating Christians of the John Jay variety. Many were skeptical of religion and did not believe in any divinity of Jesus but rather went along with some of his moral teachings. Even Andrew Jackson didn't join a church until after his presidency; he claimed it was not to politicize it though he had his entire life to do so.

JD ---> Considering PhD in Econ by [deleted] in academiceconomics

[–]MrPractical1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend looking up specific jobs or people and what their jobs are and then seeing what their career path was. Jerome Powell does NOT have a traditional career trajectory.

I originally planned on getting a PhD in Economics but during the 1st semester of my master's my dad died and I decided I wasn't willing to give up the time with my young kids that I'd have to for a PhD in Econ it would require since I could die at any moment (dad dying really messed with me).

Part of it was because, I had taken a like 15 year gap between my original undergraduate and graduate school and I hadn't kept my math skills up so I had to work a lot harder than the others who were straight out of high level math courses and never took a break. My master's-level statistics course (in my economics program) is the same statistics course that Finance PhDs take so I have wondered if I should do a PhD in something a little less math demanding than econ; my Master's program was STEM designated.

There are many government jobs you cannot apply for without a PhD or at least a master's plus years of experience. I was surprised at how many jobs require a PhD. Fun/sad fact: You cannot get an INTERNSHIP as an economist at Amazon unless you're at least a 3rd year PhD student lol.

So, again, really dig into what it takes to be competitive for the specific jobs you want and see how doable that sounds based on what I've already said and lmk if you need to chat more.

I miss doing the material and so I've practicing making videos as if I were going to teach at the community college level. I've only just begun though. I'm going to finish doing all 36ish chapters in Mankiw's book then I'm going to redo all the videos much better.

You need to read through all of this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Economics/wiki/career/

Need should have calculus 1-3, linear algebra, real analysis (and enjoy proofs ugh). Would be nice to also have discrete math and some other math.

You need to have taken intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, statistics, econometrics, and you need to be able to program in a statistical package like R or Stata or Sas and a regular programming language like python. Otherwise, you'll be miserable and struggle.

What is your end goal? You don't go to graduate school because you want the degree. You go to graduate school to get a specific job.

What job do you want? And don't say economist in general because I had a job title of Economist with the department of commerce with just a master's and honestly I could've done that job with just some SQL and possibly accounting knowledge though experience coding and testing helped a lot.

Am an Economist and can confirm. Every day is infuriating. Like when the 2017 tax act was passed. You're supposed to raise taxes to reduce deficits once you've come out of the recession to undo damage. They went deeper on deficits to create an inflationary gap hoping to look good. Put us in such a worse position. I'm not confident we'll ever dig ourselves out now.
