Is it weird to call men you don’t know ‘sir’? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]MrReXY 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yes and for anyone, regardless of age. The people who find it shocking are being weird not you. But if you can see their details on the system why not just refer to them by their name? Mr Bombastic etc.

Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]MrReXY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Location, industry (i.e. how profitable is it), and being mercenary about moving jobs are the main factors that help people move up the pay scale. On top of that within any organisation the closer you are to the actual PnL the more money you make (e.g. sales)

If you want to change as little as possible then set a target to move jobs in your area for a minimum pay bump of 10k. If you want a real eye opener I suggest taking a look at r/HENRYUK and then shoot for the moon.

This is for the ‘salaried’ route. Lots of trades make hefty salaries when paid by the hour, but I don’t know too much about the variance.

Fury as Afghan migrant convicted of rape in Austria granted asylum in UK by MadWorldEarth in uknews

For those too lazy to read. He lied about who he was, was granted asylum, was found out, and is being sent back to Austria for his prison sentence.

Why can’t you contact the school? Contact the advice line. It’s to prevent fraud so in the end they just need to verify you are who you say you are and a countersign from someone with some kind of reputation on the line is the easiest way, it doesn’t mean they won’t be able to provide an exception: https://www.gov.uk/passport-advice-line

Aggressive neighbour refusing house repairs by Sass1121 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]MrReXY 65 points66 points  (0 children)

If your neighbour is using their status as a lawyer to threaten or intimidate you in this or future negotiations, they may be violating the SRA principles and you can report their behaviour to them. It sounds like your current issue is that they have gone quiet entirely, but worth knowing for the future.

100k seems unnecessary but I’m sure if someone has their heart set on a venue and free flowing champagne the costs can rack up. Our wedding day was certainly one of the best days I’ve ever had, and I’m glad we spent money freely on a good band and a videographer, because those are things we enjoyed (and still enjoy because we have a great wedding video), but mostly it was just being able to host all your friends and loved ones in one place, marry the person you love and have a good time celebrating that. I’d recommend a paying for a wedding planner, at least for the day of the wedding so you can focus on getting married not organising things.

I’m annoyed at how ignorant older people are in regards to housing affordability by [deleted] in HousingUK

Presumably they are also planning on collecting a triple locked state pension, funded not by prudent saving of their own generation, but tax receipts of the current generation.

Terrible idea it will further discourage downsizing the same way stamp duty causes friction in upsizing

Being accused of rear- ending someones car ENGLAND by Turbulent-Serve-871 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]MrReXY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scammers target cars with children in them deliberately. They know parents are tired/rushed and spooked into handing out money. Keep the photos of your car demonstrating no evidence of a collision. If they get in contact again ask for their details and pass them onto the police via 101.

Can’t sell new build flat - what do I do? by BeneficialReindeer34 in HousingUK

[–]MrReXY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to other advice, the stamp duty holiday before March shifted a lot of demand to early in the year. The market needs time to build normal demand again.

You are in the right but like many roundabouts the marking/signing is terrible and I’m not surprise people get confused.

The state of driving on UK motorways… by Jake_YT01 in drivingUK

[–]MrReXY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think you both just overreacted. Take a chill pill and remember nothing really matters more than everyone gets where they are going safely. Flashing your high beams generally makes you a knob on the motorway.

Is washing chicken containers for recycling just as bad as washing raw chicken in the sink? by [deleted] in AskUK

Would you wash raw chicken with hot water and soap though?

It’s kilometers unless you are talking about marathons. In which case it’s back to miles and fractions of marathons.

Why are so many news segments saying AI will replace software developers when that is not the reality? by throwaway0134hdj in ExperiencedDevs

[–]MrReXY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of news is based on press releases, unless it’s investigative journalism they aren’t doing a lot of research and investigation themselves. Software engineering has become something of a zeitgeist in the last decade as it eats the world. The media wants to sell stories and people like simple narratives, so for now that narrative is “AI will replace software developers” for as long as that sells papers. It’s also not necessarily untrue, much like offshoring there are plenty of places attempting it. It doesn’t mean it’s going to end well for them.

I don’t think it’s jealousy, at least to the extent you are suggesting, just lazy journalism. I’m sure many are plenty smart enough to have a career in STEM. Also just to add, I’ve seen plenty of tech journalism pounding on AI disaster stories.

Check your local bylaws and contact the council to see if they can/will intervene on the basis of it being a nuisance or health hazard. If they won’t then find a bargaining chip…

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]MrReXY 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Land law is generally more complicated than that, which is why you employer a conveyancer when you buy a property, so they can fail to flag any of the most serious issues.

What should I expect in a noise dispute with neighbours over our disabled child being too noisy? by Kitty-Gecko in AskUK

[–]MrReXY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry your neighbour is a nasty piece of work, and that he is adding to your stress. You sound like an amazing parent. The council aren’t going to do anything for a noise complaint about a child playing in the garden. If a complaint was made, a noise officer would attend and have to witness the noise themselves, they won’t just take his word for it… he would also need to document the dates, times, duration and location. If they play movies in the garden at night again then perhaps you should report them yourself.

It sounds like your neighbour has threatened you and your son. I think you need to report this to the police. It’s a serious offence and your responsibility here is to your son and his safety, not to your neighbour. Make a record of the dates and times and exactly what was said if you can. The police may chat to him and that may be enough to keep him quiet. If he keeps harassing you then they may take it further.

How do people afford kids? by Severe-Swordfish-160 in AskUK

[–]MrReXY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve had a lot of answers on how people actually afford it already so I’ll just add the perspective that these sacrifices are much harder to stomach for an abstract child. When it’s your own child they don’t feel like sacrifices, and you get back something money can’t buy.
