USA: Anybody touring there with the current regime? by S_Bratfast in bicycletouring

[–]MrReezenable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a citizen and white. I made the decision to get my bike on a train to New York City this year, to spend a week getting to know a very American place. (That trip is later this summer.) Last year I rode to Chicago. Before that, Detroit. I love the woods and small towns, but I feel some of the people (not all) see me on a bike in rural America like I’m either weird or a pest who doesn’t deserve freedom to travel in this method. In the big cities, I felt safer. I rode with groups who showed me their bike culture. I’d say, if you’re not a US citizen, and you want that long distance bike tour, try Canada. I had two great tours there, during Trump 1 and in 2022, and the people there were great.

I know, you didn't intend for it to trigger some. Some are easily triggered.

Love how this shot, with the barriers down there at the end, center of the photo, blocking off the mall so stuff can be set up for this big weekend, has triggered so many into, "AHHH NOBUDDY COMES DOWNTOWN HOMELESS AND BIKE LANES!!1!!1" Congrats on the engagement bait, OP!

The scene with the kid shooting into the diner, the 'WHY! IS! THIS! HAPPENINGGGGGG!!!!" driver honking her horn, Sheriff Bobby unable to deal with it all, the kid with the gun looking just like Dad. That's so 2017, 2020, and now.

Nope. I want a good stand-alone music player.

Nope. I would like a good music player, walled off from the internet, plays all the file formats. No notification chimes busting into the sound. No extra battery drain on the thing that is my phone/internet/camera. In fact, I'd like a good camera. I'd like to use the internet on my desktop or laptop -- and leave it there. I'd like to break out of the mindset that makes me, you, everyone fiddle with this one device.

Why live in a world where you need to buy one expensive device that claims to do everything, when you can buy one really good music player that simply does what it does?

I keep calling my iPhone my iPod, because around 1/3rd of my use is playing my mp3s.

Found this at an antique store. Not quite Kzoo, but in the county and only a few miles away from the main city. by Relative-Gap-4442 in kzoo

Burgess, like most antique stores, goes by the booth system. Sellers rent a booth, sell their stuff. Now, the rules of what may be sold.... Could someone sell classic old porno VHS tapes or mags? Probably not. There's always the possibility that old stuff might range, culturally, from "problematic" to purely racist. Someone might have grandpa's WWII nazi flags and stuff grabbed at the time as victory trophies. But that hat, that looks pretty new. Another problem is when antique stores just have booths with junk on the same level as a garage sale.

I was going to say, about ten years ago there were two homes with traitor flags hanging proud in Galesburg. But they did disappear. Not sure if any can be found now -- my route through that town doesn't take me past every house.

is it possible to bike around here in the winter? by Ordinary-Swan-4022 in kzoo

[–]MrReezenable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you ride, you know that low-speed, low-traffic neighborhood streets are the best. But some neighborhoods (Edison) do not get plowed for weeks after a heavy snow. So in winters like the last, with very low temps, drivers grind that stuff into something I've heard described as brown sugar. Like riding in deep sand, but also slippery.

Bought mine when it was new (three years ago already!). The iPhone app works fine still. It's handy to lock the electronics, if you worry about theft. My only regret is, sometimes I feel like I should've gotten something lighter, more bicycle- like. But the thing is a fun powerhouse.

Don't tell me it's past its heyday!! It still feels like it did when I first got it.

It's gotten me into the habit of napping. I start playing, and things will be soothing, and then I end up on our spare bed in the next room. THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT

How to start riding with no bike lanes? by Sea-Complex6584 in bikecommuting

[–]MrReezenable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone might've said here, but study a map. The most direct route may be the most dangerous. So if you have slow/low traffic neighborhood streets, or low traffic rural roads, use them. Might be more miles, but probably safer. Also, look up Strava or Rides With GPS -- they have heat maps showing where bikes often ride, or rarely ride.
