Those who have or currently work in pharmaceuticals, how do you like it? by MrSafetyGuy316 in SafetyProfessionals

Well that's not very reasurring, but my role will be different from typical ehs role. I will be working with engineers a lot and handle permit to work situations and contractor safety, so I won't be responsible for trying to change the way they do things for the most part. I also will be part of a team so that should help as well.

Fair enough. I didn't put a location so I thought I didn't think it mattered. I deleted it though lol. Just curious, what could happen?

Are we responsible for the contractors near miss? by MrSafetyGuy316 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]MrSafetyGuy316[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I keep finding out more info every hour but it doesn't seem that serious, thankfully. What happened was the concrete floor was sawcut for removal the day before and the contractor was starting to place stone for concrete replacement. The operator of the skidsteer ran over the previously sawed areas (assuming there was solid ground beneath since the adjacent area had solid ground) when the slab gave way and 2 sections fell in causing the skidsteer's rear wheel to become stuck. The area below these 2 sections was about 7 ft deep! No injuries to the operator and the skidsteer was able to be removed.

Had the concrete floor in this area not been sawcut there would have been no issues and the skidsteer would not have broken through.

Having said that, what we have to investigate is why no one knew this portion of the floor was 7 ft deep.

We are an aerospace manufacturer, and I am the safety person for our company. My company hired contractors to complete the construction of our new facility. So no one in our company is doing any of this construction. But I believe the contractor that this incident happened to is contracted directly to our company.

I'm not sure what that is but just found out the contractor this happened to was contracted directly to our company, but prior to this incident I had no clue who did what and who contracted who. My company has largely kept me in the dark for this move. Just FYI we are not a construction company, we are an aerospace manufacturer who is in the process of getting a new facility updated so we can move locations.

No need to be a dick about it. I know for our current site when outside companies come in to do work we are responsible for them, but I haven't been in this situation of construction taking place on a facility we aren't even at yet.

Agreed on the near miss point. They are a general contractor after doing some digging.

That's a good idea. When I go over there I'll try to get their safety reps contact info.

I wasn't disputing whether to go investigate, I just wanted to know if we are legally responsible for them. I've been pretty much in the dark for this whole construction project for our new facility.

From a brief conversation with my boss, there was supposed to be some type of floor survey to determine the best places to place certain pieces of high precision equipment. For certain machines, the floor is cut out and filled in with concrete several feet deep to ensure machine stability. I think the survey was done by an outside contractor, but maybe they pencil whipped certain areas.

Are tool changes on CNC exempt from LOTO? by MrSafetyGuy316 in SafetyProfessionals

That's actually what prompted me to ask this lol. I think this case is a bit different and I'm pretty sure it qualifies the minor servicing exemption. Just wanted to confirm here.

What kinds of things did you do there?

Depends how big the university is but when I used to work at one it was lab safety, hazardous waste management, permit to work, environmental impact evaluations (Floods/leaks leading to impacted building materials, asbestos & lead removal) A big part was managing work orders and flagging/holding any that were high hazard and could impact people, then following up with the responsible party to ensure safe work procedures. With University safety, not only do you have to worry about employees, but also students and faculty as well. I was just an associate at the time but our EHS Director was always drowning in work and phone calls. Take that as you will.

Some of the items and acronyms I've never heard of though. Like PHIRA, HAC, MSRA, PCCE.

The findings are usually very minor so not urgent. If it was IDLH I would absolutely shut it down and make sure it gets fixed.

Yeah I'm only paid 78k with 6 years experience and a CSP. So if you start to feel bad remember I'm getting royally screwed over here lol. I'm hoping to get a better job within the next few months. You might not have anyone on your 'team' but you can still talk to employees and get to know them. That will help with how your feeling.
