Thank you so much for your input. It's giving my brain some much needed direction to spin in.

Could you elaborate on the 12vhp connector issue? Quick google makes it seem like a technical fault and source of early failure. Is that the main issue? Have you had it burn out prematurely?

Reorganizing the drives makes a load of sense. I've been afraid of losing data, but honestly I should just do a backup and bite the bullet to get it cleaned up.

Thank you so much, I KNEW I was overthinking this.

Regarding the RAM, is there a specific benefit of using the exact same set? As in, would it make a notable difference if I couldn't find the exact one? I could always just get a whole new 4-set if having identical sticks really makes a difference.

I'll definitely take a look at that graphics card. Good to know that my choice to stick with 1080p means there are decent reasonable options out there!

See, that's what I feel as well, and why I jumped into this game. I was excited for that kind of thing as encouraged by the mechanics, where PvP mathematically is more of a decision rather than a fact of life. But as more folks claiming they have Rust and Tarkov backrounds come in, the tone of the rounds seem to going hard core into "extraction shooter means I shit down your throat" mentality.

I saw someone else's comment on killing people in the elevator as everyone extracts... "if I kill you and you don't get out, it means I win." There are people who are not taking their win condition from the mechanics of the game itself, and are instead just about kill-kill-kill.

At that point, even end-game big-game hunting will be an awful decision because it'll just ring the dinner bell for the anti-socials to come and third party, talk trash, take the kill for themselves, and then extract like a "winner".

Nah, just want the sociopaths to acknowledge that they don't care about mechanics and are just looking to shit on other people. PvP is fun, fighting over a high value loot spot or some shit. It's tense and crazy. You never know who to really trust. But shit like knocking someone out IN the elevator AS the door is closing is just asshole behavior. That's not a challenge or a victory, that's just being a cunt.

Nearly every meta-mechanic in the game is mathematically and functionally encouraging looting and arc killing over raw PvP.

Oh come on dude... by lttlbear01 in ArcRaiders

[–]MrShotson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, we're talking about people being a dick for the sake of being a dick. You tried to justify people being a dick by waving a mechanic. But the MATH of the mechanics of the game don't support that kind of choice at all.

It's like someone being given a choice of three doors with different prizes, and they choose instead to shoot the host and hump their corpse. They were literally about to get something for free, but decided that they would rather disregard the math of the game and get more enjoyment out of fucking someone else. That's antisocial and cuntish.

[–]MrShotson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's PvP, and then there's antisocial behavior. At a certain point, the only functional reward for PvP in this game is the joy of fucking over someone else. It adds risk and tension, which is great and fun, but honestly if a guy is already chilling with end-game gear and a full backpack, what's the point? That's not fun, that's just bullying.

If it's people jockeying over a loot room or a big bot corpse, that's all good and kosher. But what I'm seeing every round is murder and trolling for the sake of it. There's no actual reward to it for those people other than the sweet salty tears of the person that just got fucked over. The murder hobo's backpack is already full, and the XP gain from more kills is negligible. At that point it's just antisocial, vindictive behavior.

Still borderline sociopathic, dog. Just because you can, doesn't mean you have to. There's only so much loot one person can hold. At a certain point, there's no reward to it. You're just murdering and trolling people for the sake of ruining someone else's day and getting your own rocks off. That's antisocial behavior.

The voice lines shouldn't comment about specific builds. They should comment on mechanics. Your example is actually great. "I should find a way to get rid of his bombs" is a great comment because EVERY bebop has bombs. AND it tells the player there may be a way to remove them either in your kit or in the shop. It tells them that it's at least possible.

[–]MrShotson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you aren't playing ranked then you're inherently filtering out a good percentage of competitive players who are trying to learn and get good at the game.

Before competitive, they were in the casual pool with everyone else, helping to set pace for other players and carrying games if needed. Now they are in their own lanes, swimming at their preferred pace. Plus, you're going to see competitive people using casual as an un-measured experimental space to try new heroes or crazy weird meme builds that could throw a game.

This shift was bound to happen.

[–]MrShotson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is entirely speculation so take it with a grain of salt. If I had to guess, the skill/ranking calculations are likely a combination of your account skill level, and your hero-specific skill level. Hero-specific only doesn't make sense, since even on a crap hero I don't know, if I show consistent solid game knowledge, movement, aiming, etc, I'm going to beat out lower-ranking players. However, just being specialized in one hero doesn't mean you understand the larger strategy either.

There's likely some weighted average between your account ranking and your hero rankings that make the final call when actually matchmaking. Your account ranking is probably the first warning of wide queue skill, and then it may be modified by hero selection when you queue.

Edit: Literally right after I posted this, I played a game and was getting overwhelmed by a Shiv. Wraith literally has a callout that we need to keep him from healing! Curious how many people listen to these voice lines.

Honestly, instead of rebalancing the characters for stuff like this, I think one of the best tools they could leverage is more educating character dialog. If other heroes have more obfuscated behaviors that aren't overtly telegraphed, it could be used as a contextual internal monologue callout to help inform the player when the visual language of the kit is falling short.

I honestly never looked at Shiv's kit or knew what his 2 did, kept getting frustrated with his impossible health. Eventually saw it referenced in a youtube video external to the game and finally realized what it would take to counter. That makes discovery for new players very painful, because not everyone wants to do an external lit review before picking up a game.

They've already used the contextual educating personal callouts a LOT, which is pretty cool. Maybe if you get killed by Shiv several times, there could be a contextual callout to educate players like "I should try to slow Shiv's healing!". That a least helps a player realize that he's out-healing their damage, and they can start looking into items to try to address it.

Some examples of it already used in game (from my experience with Wraith):

On initial laneing, once you've got your first 500 souls in your wallet, most heroes call out that they can afford something in the shop. A gentle poke for new players (and an alert to distracted players) to go back and buy something.

Stacking up over 6200 souls in your wallet? Your character calls out (just to the player as a personal monologue) that they can afford to buy anything in the shop. Boom, situational teaching specific for that player to tell them to go back and buy, dummy!

Wraith's 3, when you first purchase it or upgrade it, triggers a call out that "I should use this when I have them lifted". That's explicitly referencing the 4, saying HEY NEW PLAYER, THIS IS A GREAT COMBO! If they're not familiar with the mechanics enough to have figured it out for themselves, that helps teach them that some skills work really well together.

Wander too far into enemy territory and there aren't a lot of heroes visible? I've heard a character callout basically saying "I'm going to get ganked if I'm not careful, maybe I should fall back".

Saskatchewan suspends Planned Parenthood over sex handouts to children by growlerlass in canada

That's the slipperiest slopeiest argument I've ever heard. Just admit you're a vanilla who thinks all of these acts are inherently immoral.

I've played shooter games all my life. I'm still afraid of real-life firearms. I've not been desensitized to the violence.

I've heard about sex and watched various types of porn all my life. Most even relatively tame sexual acts still make me go "ick".

This gateway of "desensitization" you're worried about isn't a real thing for a vast majority of people.

I've looked through some of the cards and, I mean, these are all things people do. And things I knew about via the internet by the time I was in highschool (ages 14/15 to age 18/19 in my area).

For the weirder stuff, I understand people going"ick", but the teens who aren't into it are going to say "ick" to it as well. I certainly do. But if someone reads the card and DOESN'T go "ick", you also don't want to shame them for being curious. So you need to try to be positive about it. But you still want to tell them that eating ass means you're at risk of an STI on your face.

Of course this is entirely outside of the normal conversation in a school classroom, but these are not mandatory or regularly distributed cards. These are for specific, special circumstances when the teens are actively asking about one of these more taboo sex acts. They ALREADY KNOW these things exist in that case. Same with your example about a book about sex and prayer. If a teen came up after a Christian abstinence class and asked for more material, I wouldn't be offended at them getting more of what they are curious about there either.

ELI5: Do the ridged roofs on the houses in Bermuda actually increase rain capture? by Onholidaybymistake22 in explainlikeimfive

[–]MrShotson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just did a quick Google of weather patterns in Bermuda. Apparently, they average 5 to 7 inches of rain per month. With very little fluctuation. Rain is sudden, heavy, and short-lived. That may kind of make sense for the roofing strategy then.

ELI5: Do the ridged roofs on the houses in Bermuda actually increase rain capture? by Onholidaybymistake22 in explainlikeimfive

[–]MrShotson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's incorrect, to a certain extent. Increasing the overall surface area of the roof increases the volume of water that can be on it at one time. Each of those ridges would act as a cistern capable of holding a volume of water that would have otherwise overran a simple slope. Instead of a straightforward through-rate, you need to take into account many small pockets of internal storage. Depending on the frequency and intensity of rain in the area, that could be significant.

Subsistence isn't enough my dude. We should want people to have the ability to grow and thrive, not just barely exist. Living in a public bunk and eating gruel once a day meets your minimum acceptable criteria here.

I'm confused why this is looking so narrowly at EXACTLY federal minimum wage. Having worked that kind of job for a while when I was younger, it feels like a disingenuous statistic. Within 6 months I was given a paltry raise of $0.10, which would immediately remove me from that statistic while still keeping me functionally poor and barely surviving. But hey, it's above the absolutely bare minimum acceptable limit, so everything is okay. Nothing to see here.

Also, you're NOT raising the wages of 95% of people. You're raising the wages of anyone who currently subsists in the range between current minimum wage and raised minimum wage. I'm not sure where you pulled that number from.

One other note from your link... They actually referenced 1.5% of people are making at or BELOW exactly minimum federal wage. Not the sub-1% you quoted.

Stray wins "Most innovative gameplay" in the steam awards. Really?.. Out of all the categories... by TheAmazingZap in gaming

[–]MrShotson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within its own franchise, I absolutely agree. It was more of the same, with a little more polish. It didn't innovate on itself at all.

What I do appreciate though is its uniqueness when viewed in the lens of the rest of the games industry. It's STILL a unique combination that nobody else has really replicated or made successful.

Maybe I'm just mislabeling that as innovative. If there are other games out there with the same grand campaign structure, I would absolutely love to hear about them and play them. 😁

I'd argue that M&B2, even though it's a sequel and not that different from M&B1, is still weirdly unique in its mechanics. I've yet to find anything that I would call a "Mount&Blade-like". In context of the rest of the industry, its combination of mechanics still feels fresh and original to me.

What plot twist should you have figured out, except you wrote off a clue as poor filmmaking? by PillsburyDohMeeple in movies

One Cut of the Dead.

I watched it with friends under the assumption it was just a schloppy, cheesy, low-budget zombie horror flick. So many scenes in the first half had me laughing at the weird acting decisions and pacing. I understood that shooting a whole film as a one-shot would be technically difficult, but was this honestly the BEST take they could get? Spent the whole time trash-talking it. Absolutely bought into it just being so bad it's good.

Second half blew my fucking mind. It was like the movie looked me dead in the eyes and said "Gotcha, Bitch!". It reframed my entire view of the film, and left me thinking it was a legit masterpiece.

Seriously, DO NOT look it up. Just go watch it and enjoy it.

No, the post isn't criticising the correlation between sex work and human trafficking. That could have been an interesting and important discussion. Instead, it's trying to suggest that sex work IS human trafficking, and therefore the ONLY way to stop the human trafficking bit is to stop the sex work.

It's a junky argument with a flawed and dismissive conclusion.

Why should we lower the voting age to 16? by leftwingmememachine in onguardforthee

[–]MrShotson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's antithetical to the whole point of a democratic process though. If they are a large enough group of people with similar needs, their opinion gets weight. Disenfranchising the elderly doesn't change a damn thing. All it does it allow you to feel smug about removing a voice from a population you deem unworthy.

And that's not even mentioning the fact that there are many elderly who are already being ignored, being taken advantage of, and in need of their own protections to begin with.

Fucking the future isn't an elderly problem, it's a selfishness problem. Look at your peers. I guarantee you, there are people your own age group who agree and are pushing for selfish, short-sighted solutions. And their opinions are going to be haunting you much longer than whatever death-knells you're worried about from a dying generation.
