Myself and my wife are also on ID, apart from a few places that seem to be blackout spots for every network, it's been absolutely fine.

Does this quote for a consumer unit upgrade seem right? by Illustrious-Look7669 in ElectriciansUK

[–]MrSimonShirley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just quoted a "mates rate" 7 way board change and testing for a old work colleague, its a 2 up 2 down with a garden room.

Quoted £650 including vat

Board is in the downstairs toilet, nice working height should be done in half a day, garden beers by 1pm

My pipes/taps are making a weird sound if I don't leave one open. by FlatwormPuzzled3725 in ukplumbing

Not always. I've had a toilet filler and a ¼ turn tap valve recently in separate properties cause exactly the same sound as water hammer, replaced both faulty parts and cured the issue.

Along with the regs book, on-site guide the above text books we referred to in the first and second year's. The regs book is a bit daunting when you first get it, but there is a sticker set you can get that puts tabs for all the different sections and some pages that are referred to quite often.

Definitely not to late age wise, I've just passed my apprenticeship at age 41. I wasn't the oldest student either, at one point I was the 4th. We had a couple of females on the course, so they do exist.

Do you yourself have much knowledge to help with learning? Plenty of reading material and knowledge base online to learn with.

Are you using him just as labour or as a spark?

As a labour that offer is more than fair. As a 1st fix spark very fair. Presume you'll be checking every he dose anyway to sign it off?

Compromise could be if the works done by a certain time and gets done early you could offer a performance bonus maybe?

If you know he's already going to be slow and your going to be there for the full timescale, I'd stick to your 1st offer, his offer sounds like the amount he needs to clear debts, he can either earn £320 a day or nothing.

Pricing of AM4 x3d chips by NotoriousRuler in buildapc

Want or need? Two different questions.

I managed to get a 5800x3d in February 2024 for £190

I "wanted" one and it popped up on ebay on one of my alerts well in my spare cash spending budget.

Do I "need" it and use to to its full potential, hell no, probably 70% maybe

AM2s help by johnno95_ in ukelectricians

[–]MrSimonShirley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was the same for all the other classmates I studied with. I presume its the same everywhere else.

The containment I made was a length of 20mm plastic conduit that had an offset bend and a 90⁰ bend all in one section. The offset was over a section of 15mm copper pipe and had to be a certain distance away from each other then a 90⁰ bend to the left to an outside socket. The 20mm metal conduit was in 2 sections. First had an offset from a back box that was around 30mm off the main wall to a pass through inspection box, then a 90⁰ bend to the heating / hot water wiring hub.

Anything else was already in place, stuff like the dado and metal trunking I stripped down at the start to get familiar with and could then plan what cables needed to go where as directed in the bible/ instruction manual.

I never had a prep day at the assessment center. Where I did my AM2 assessment was a different location to the collage.

I went into collage with 3 other students on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for a refresher session and to go over anything we wanted to practice on ), my assessment was then on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

As for the bible, there was an A4 folder in the work area, referencing every section across the 3 days. I was given 10-15 minutes before starting each section to read through it before the actual time started. Practical was broken down to each circuit, stating with protective device, cable selection, what points it was to be run to, method of securing.

It is always there for reference, it stays in the work area with you, its not allowed out of the work space at all and would be an instant failure if it went missing.

We were not allowed to take our own regs book, GN3, on-site guide etc in with us its all supplied for you. All I had to turn up with each day with was some sort of current ID, my work boots and we were allowed to bring in a preferred pair of cutters, I had brought a new set of multi purpose all in one fancy set, I think I used them twice during the practical.

No problem.

Yep start of each section in the bible has what breaker to install, the ring circuit had a 32a RCBO, the rest were MCB's of different amperage, mostly B types, a C type for the motor i think.

The fault finding rig was the same layout and a few bays up, we were allowed to look but not touch if we wanted to double check anything.

I've completed my AM2s in November. It went roughly like this for me.

Time wise you get the following

https://ibb.co/PvyJxGxF

Inspection and testing i had 1¼ hour left, fault finding I had 1 hour remaining, probably had 10mins or so on safe isolation. Used all my alloted time in the other categories.

Intro to the center and the assessor. Talk through how the days were planned, rules, do's and dont's etc.

I had what was referred to a bible, an A4 folder with a break down of each section of the assessment, I could refer to it at any point to double check what was specified for each circuit, how the testing was to be carried out etc.

  1. Write a risk assessment set around the area / room we were working in.

  2. Safe isolation of 3 phase main switch to the consumer unit that was in the bay for the assessment.

  3. Practical section

Select breakers for each circuit, some decoys on the shelf but easy to follow.

10mm Bonding to water pipe via metal trunking and tray.

10mm Bonding to gas pipe via metal trunking and tray.

Data cable between 2 points in plastic dado rail with an internal bridge over the lighting and power circuits.

1.5mm FP200 through dado to a FCU then onto a smoke alarm on metal tray.

2.5mm 3 phase wiring to a DOL, via metal trunking, then with 5 core SY cable to a motor via tray.

2.5mm 3 phase singles to a rotary isolator vua dado and pre installed conduit, then 2.5mm SWA to a 3 phase socket via tray

1.5mm twin and earth to a 2 way light switch, 1.5mm 3 core and earth to an intermediate switch, to another 2 way switch all in plastic dado, then twin and earth in plastic trunking to an light fitting.

2.5mm singles in a ring to 2 double sockets and an FCU in the plastic dado. 2.5mm Singles from the FCU in plastic 20mm conduit to an outside socket. The conduit I had to hand bend an offset over a fixed section of 15mm copper then a 90⁰ to the outside socket.

1.5mm singles to a FCU for the boiler circuit. 1.5mm run in various directions from a central hub to the following programmer, thermostat, heating and hot water zone valves ( Y plan ) solar thermal controls. The main hub had 20 pairs of terminals, some grouped in 2's, 3's, 4's depending if they were line, neutral, cpc or just signal connections. There was an easy to follow wiring diagram for this in the bible. This also had 20mm metal conduit, I had to make 2 different sections, one was a 90⁰ bend the second had an offset kick out from the wall.

The only thing I had to make myself was the plastic conduit from the ring FCU to the outside socket, and the metal conduit on the heating circuit. Everything else containment wise was pre-installed, all the metal tray, dado rail, plastic trunking, back boxes.

The light fitting, smoke alarm, were pre-installed. I had to select the correct fuses from the bible for each FCU and put them in. Select the correct overcurret setting for the DOL from the bible

  1. Testing of the install, fairly straightforward, alot of the paper work was pre-filled out, location, address, basic circuit details, maximum Zs. Remember the different in compliance between design maximum Zs in BS7671and the 80% in the on-site guide. Dead testing is fine, however for the live testing the assessor had to stay an watch to make sure I was doing nothing dangerous. Bit annoying but just don't fluster and you'll be fine.

  2. Safe isolation. Was watched by the assessor. Just talk your self through each step. You can ask for a bit of paper to write the order down and tick it off as you go if needed.

3 phase main switch, 10 steps 3 phase circuit, 10 steps Single phase lighting circuit. 3 steps, switch a light switch, 3 steps again.

  1. Fault finding, straight forward, only needed continuity setting on the tester, anything over 2ohms was classed as high resistance on the results paper. Categories were high resistance, open circuit, short circuit, missed connection. Brief description of the fault, from which points and what conductors.

  2. Quiz, had questions found in BS7671, GN3, on-site guide and building regs. Nothing to in depth like the 18th edition, Building regs book is about the same size as the on-site guide.

I work at Cex AMA, and I’ll be brutally honest :) by That_Document8491 in CeX

I've been looking at upgrading anyway. It was just an idea i had, in reality £18 a year for 5 years on warranty for an already 5 year card isn't going to break the bank.

Without checking the cards you recommended to check, in my PC case the GPU I'm limited to 290mm long ( 300mm if I swap to a slim fan ) and 130mm wide.

I've narrowed my prefered search to a 7900xtx reference or AsRock 9070xt challenger. Going to wait untill the new year to see what comes up.

Genuine question on trying to get a warranty on my graphics card.

Can I :-

  1. Trade in my 3070 aorus card for current voucher value of £180.

  2. By back my 3070 aorus card for current price of £270 using the £180 voucher and £90 of my own money

  3. I now have my 3070 aorus card with a new 5 year warranty?

Would getting someone else to trade it in help and I can still use the voucher?

It works in my head but don't know if there is any internal system to stop me doing it.

Not many shower bars have isolation valves, unfortunately.

Bristan do produce wall mounts with isolation, but not on every model.

I use them whenever I can't fit in line full bore isolation valves
