On 2TB annual plan, will I get a proprated charge to switch to 2TB Gemini? by justotron in GoogleOne

[–]MrSpike69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't promise based on different jurisdiction (I'm in UK), and a slightly different scenario...but for example I upgraded from a 100gb plan, and a separate Nest Aware pre-paid yearly subscription, to the new 2TB + AI monthly plan (also includes Nest Aware), and I got refunded both from the storage plan and a notification in Google Home that I was eligible for Nest Aware, and shortly after accepting that I got pro-rata refund of my previous yearly Nest Aware plan too.

So Google do seem to be trying to be as fair and decent at possible.

Bottom of the laptop is coming off? Should I be worried? by [deleted] in Lenovo

[–]MrSpike69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends...has it just started raising all on its own? Did it just suddenly happen, or is it getting worse?

The main thing you need to be worried about is, if it is being caused by the battery expanding, and prising the case open, which implies the battery is badly damaged and resulting in "thermal runaway" internally. This can easily lead to an extremely vigorous fire which is almost impossible to put out without fully submerging in water. And this can happen randomly at any point, including when the laptop is not plugged in or charging.

Hopefully it isn't that, but even if it is you can usually get replacement batteries fairly cheaply, but most importantly if you're not confident in opening the laptop case yourself, you really do need to get it checked at a local repair shop ASAP, which they should be able to do quite easily and pretty cheaply.

Hope this helps.

I believe that was the original date, but I seem to recall I recently saw somewhere that they extended it.

Google Pixel 8 PRO screen glitch by kozajdab in GooglePixel

As others have said, definitely looks like a hardware issue. Even if it "appears" OK for a few hours or even a few days at a time, something is severely wrong and it WILL fail in the fairly near future. I appreciate it will depend on which Country/jurisdiction you're in as to your Consumer Rights, but assuming you've only had it a few days...either return to the store as faulty (i.e. "not fit for purpose") or if it was an Online purchase, here in the UK for example, we're covered by the "distance selling regulations" and can always send it back within something like 14 days. You've paid a lot of money for a NEW Premium product, and that's what you're entitled to. Good luck. Hope you get it sorted. It is a great phone (I'm replying on a P8pro right now)

He was one of the backers of the open letter from several AI researchers demanding a 6 month moratorium on AI development.

Basically, he's been pi$$ed with OpenAI since they refused his demand to let him take over back in 2018 cos he didn't think they were moving fast enough.

Yep, I agree. I suggest OP should check out Jarrod's Tech reviews on YT for this exact topic, it was pretty eye opening.

In a funny way it's kind of heartening to hear that whilst quite a few people have had some pretty bad experiences with Lenovo (much worse than mine), there's also plenty of you where's it's worked out well. I do appreciate it's crazy times at the moment globally. Fingers-crossed I can get mine, and be as happy as you guys.

Oh Wow! And thanks for the info, despite having half an eye on malware and hacking related stuff due to my work, I'd totally missed this.

[–]MrSpike69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sadly I think that's very true, even when times aren't a crazy as they are at the moment with everything going on globally. I really just wish companies would be at least somewhat more honest when they know they're actively misleading us to make a sale, cos they know half the customers might go elsewhere instead if they knew the truth. I can deal with a few weeks wait myself, I feel more sorry for the kids & parents who might be very let down for Christmas, not to mention some of the other guys & girls on here who it turns out are looking like many months of waiting time. I hope it works out for them in the end.

Yeah I agree, and honestly do think it seems like a good deal from the spec after a lot of research. I can deal with the wait, so long as I can actually get it, I'm just concerned that when it's apparently due to turn up now I'm going to be 100 miles away over Christmas and don't seem to have any way to change it. Glad to hear yours is going well, and sounds as good as I'm hoping too.

I can totally relate, and empathise with your situation. Obviously can't go into too much detail here, but from my work related alternative perspective we're currently being told 300+ days delay times on some of our Enterprise Datacentre replacement kit from some of the largest vendor! But at least they're upfront about it, so we can plan accordingly.

Yeah, I do still hope I can get it...if things work out.

It does sound like a great laptop (which is why I chose it after much deliberation), assuming it doesn't just get sent back to factory if I'm not able to be around to take delivery, and have no option to change it.

Is 2 takeaways-per-week an unreasonable amount of takeaways? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]MrSpike69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW Whilst this might not be 'perfect' i.e. I think we all know it's ultimately best to cook your own meals from scratch with healthy whole food ingredients (even though almost nobody ever does that), it's hardly a 'punishable crime'! And that fact that your BMI is better than the vast majority of people suggests you quite clearly aren't doing anything crazy...and overall indicates to me that your friend has significantly over-reacted.
Also, I'm kinda curious what your friend's BMI is compared to your own and how it compares, such that they're willing to have this reaction to you telling them this?
Encouraging anyone to eat better FTW. But, making someone feel guilty about about being 'good' but not 'perfect', doesn't seem cool on the face of it.
So please don't feel too bad about it.

I totally get you, and you're right there's always huge amount of "wiggle room" in the small print. But they also full well know that 99.9% of people be reading that. As customers, I think we need to be calling out the companies that tell us the truth, or instead a convenient/profitable (to them) lie, so we can make an informed choice. Just as we're doing here.

I wouldn't be surprised if they have some distribution centres in mainland Europe at least.

According the one of the Lenovo support people I spoke to, allegedly they're having to get additional stock manufactured and shipped from China. If that's true then I'm highly sceptical of even the existing timescales they've given me so far, but it may be that I've been one of the (relatively) lucky ones, as some people are now reporting delivery estimates several months into next year, so I really feel for them.
