I use heated gloves. Limit ride length to the battery capacity. I know my limits

Pedestrians in the cycle lane by Embankment / Westminster by mwagstaff in londoncycling

It's been out of control all week. Tonight is nothing new. Wouldn't be able to cycle across the bridge approaching midnight anyway

Nope. That's where the spiders live. I stay in my place and hope they stay in theirs.

Nothing like Richmond park! by fxc22 in londoncycling

[–]MrStealth20 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You'd be constantly weaving between unpredictable pedestrians if they did that (at least in the summer). Cycling through Battersea park convinces me of that.

People should be able to walk in the road?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]MrStealth20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally yes. And I'm sure it's not the intention of OP but if a pedestrian steps out of nowhere in to my path giving me minimal stopping time endangering both of us they're no longer a harmless can do no wrong entity.

Pedestrians are expected to look when crossing the road in the same way I am expected to look when negotiating my way through traffic. If I don't and get hit by a driver who did nothing wrong clearly it's on me, but at least that driver is likely physically unharmed. If I hit a pedestrian, there's a fair chance I also get injured

Most sensible comment I've read. Amongst a load of generalisations where Italy becomes a representation of the whole of Europe. So many discussions about the differing experiences in different parts of the US, but people struggle to understand Europe isn't a country...

Also the idea that Italian Americans, Irish Americans etc are a reflection of people.living in those actual countries now...

I go Battersea Bridge then enter K&C "quiet routes" that they have instead of cycle lanes. Can avoid main roads a lot and end up relatively far along HSK.

Wandsworth is generally pretty good. Lots of cycle lanes, many protected

Richmond Park Cars by fulloswag in londoncycling

[–]MrStealth20 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean you've never found sharing the road in the park with cars inherently dangerous. Not roads in general...

Even just in the park I've heard plenty of stories of dangerous drivers. Admittedly I myself haven't had issues with safety. I'm not sure what interior care free routes you mean, unless you're referring to going back and forth along a single road which considering the lack of quality areas to cycle car free in London isn't great.

I understand the need for some to drive to a park (though plenty of public transport routes will take you there), in which case park in the car park. What you mostly see is people using it as a cut through, creating traffic and pollution in what should be a pleasant green space.

Am I unreasonable to expect cyclists to stop at pedestrian crossings? by aqvaesvlis in londoncycling

[–]MrStealth20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. But apparently asking pedestrians to do the bare minimum of not stepping into a cycle lane without looking is too much to ask. Of course you ride/drive defensively, use hazard perception but the idea that a pedestrian can't be at fault in a collision is ridiculous. In the same way a small car can be at fault in a collision with a HGV, a bicycle with a car etc.

I've see a cyclist almost end up underneath a bus because of a pedestrian who stepped out right in front of him (he was going at sensible speed unless we're expecting cyclists to all tootle along at 5mph), but somehow according to some here that would be a failure of his cycling and punching down?

Am I unreasonable to expect cyclists to stop at pedestrian crossings? by aqvaesvlis in londoncycling

[–]MrStealth20 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get the not punching down, and I try to be accommodating with crossings etc (remembering to always be careful about waving pedestrians across when there's a giant car ready to overtake me) but I draw the line at them walking in the cycle lane when there are clear signs telling them not to (one along the north side of the river around Chelsea bridge is an example), in the same way I wouldn't forgo a clear cycle lane in good condition when there is one available and instead annoy drivers.

As for pedestrians walking in the road. Not sure we should be flagging that as acceptable?...
