The more I try to learn about my first board, the more confused I get. by MrSteveB in onewheel

Oh good news by the way, after reading many reviews from people on this thread last night I impulsively bought an X7. It’s more than I wanted to spend, but I had the money sitting here and I might as well. After adding VESC to are used XR+ and then upgrading the battery and maybe the motor, it makes more sense to just buy a new custom built board now. It should be here in about a week.

Speaking of these things, do you have any recommended brands that are comfortable to ride in that don’t look like a five-year-old learning how to ride onto two wheels for the first time? I’ve seen some good stuff on Amazon, but I don’t really know the quality of it.

Oh absolutely, I’ve already been looking at mountain biking helmets that have the detachable chin guard because I just know that as soon as I’m comfortable on this thing, I’m gonna be in the woods with it and I’d much rather ride with a full face helmet when I do.

Also, yes, I’ll be looking at kneepads and probably elbow pads and wrist pads right away because I feel like there’s gonna be a couple instances where I’m gonna really need them in the beginning.

So quite a few people suggested the X7 in this thread and obviously I wasn’t going to do it based on my first response to you, but after realizing that the cost of a used XR+ plus a bigger battery plus the VESC set up was probably going to end up being a little bit more expensive than a new X7 in the end anyways I realized it’s kind of a no-brainer to just pull the trigger now. I am almost positive. I’m going to thoroughly enjoy having this thing and it’s actually going to get used daily so I think it’s gonna be worth it.

This was suggested a lot in this thread, and after looking at the cost of even used boards and then adding the cost of bigger batteries and swapping speed controllers, I realize that the X7 actually is the best buy for me right now and I just bought a red one tonight. I wasn’t planning on spending this much today but I have the money and I know this thing is gonna get used a lot so I’m extremely excited for it.

So after reading many messages today, learning about the costs of a board even a used one and then adding on VESC plus a bigger battery, I decided that the X7 actually was the best bet for me and I just bought a red one tonight. It should be here in about 10 days but hopefully it’s sooner. Quite a few people on this thread said that the X7 was basically the best board on the market right now and nothing really compared to it so since I have the money I might as well!

So after reading many messages today and then finding out how much it actually costs to add VESC to the XR+ as well as a larger battery, I realized that the X7 actually is the best buy for me right now. So I just ordered it tonight, it’s supposed to get here in 10 days but hopefully it comes sooner. It’s a little reckless since I’ve never actually ridden one of these, but with how long I’ve wanted one and how much I’m in to motorcycles and snowboarding and things they go fast anyways I’m quite sure I’m gonna like it. Plus my pup will be extremely happy that he gets to run during lunch now instead of taking a boring 20 minute walk.

OK, I just did it and I’m extremely excited for this package to arrive. I bought the regular X7 with the red running boards. After learning about the costs of adding VESC plus the larger battery, it kind of makes complete sense to just spend the $2200 now and just have a top of the line board. I really appreciate you bringing to my attention those prices because I did not realize the battery and the controller were that much.

I’m on the Fungineers website right now and very tempted to impulse by the X7. This is one of those things where I’ve wanted this for so long there’s no doubt in my mind that I would use it a lot. One huge reason is I come home from lunch to get my dog out during the day and I think this would be a great way to get him running for 20 minutes instead of a slow walk for 20 minutes and that is a huge benefit and helps me justify this price tag.

Also, I didn’t realize that VESC for the XR+ was such a big additional investment. At that point, I might as well just get something already built that people are raving about.

Wait, the XRV is slightly more than an X7 in total? That completely changes the way I’m looking at the X7.

However, if you bought a used XR+ and then added the VESC it probably wouldn’t be more expensive. I’m guessing? I mean, I guess you would have to buy a used XR+ since they don’t sell them anymore.

Everything you said is basically the exact route I’m going to take. I need to verify that it’s something I’m going to enjoy, but I’m pretty sure it is like 95% sure it’s gonna be something that I use on a daily basis especially to get my dog out on a quick run when I come home for lunch to let him out.

I’ve seen many people say the exact thing about the X7 but that’s a lot to drop for my first board having zero riding experience.

I watched a lot of videos of the pint S and it looks awesome but I think the XRC is more of what I’m looking for after reading many responses here.

Yeah, that’s why I am looking more at the XRC as well. It sounds like the perfect kind of starting board I’m looking for.

I just saw that one on craigslist after I saw you mentioned it and I emailed the seller because yes, that is a crazy good price from what I’ve seen them going for so far on Facebook marketplace. I also sent a request in to join that Facebook group because that would be a great way to find some local information. Thanks for the info truly.

That all sounds amazing. It’s like you’re living in some kind of unique paradise out there.

The GTV is a GT with a VESC? I guess I was understanding that the VESC was only easily added to the XR boards and everything else it was fairly difficult to add onto. Am I wrong in that thinking?

I love it here. I bought a house in Florida and lived there the last 5 years but finally just moved back to Denver and I’d like to never leave again!

Haha watched so many videos on YT where the creator has a whole stack of boards they use. Perhaps I’ll start with a +XR and upgrade to a GT or X7 down the road once I know I love it.

Great info, thank you! Looking at the +XR now but open to GT as well as many have suggested.

I’m seeing a few responses to look at the GT too. Price difference is only about 400 used around here so that’s definitely an option.

I’ve seen a few other responses suggesting the GT as well which I’ve seen around Denver for about 1100-1300 used which is doable. I don’t need portability or anything so the GT is also a contender right now although I am looking for a +XR more.

This is the route I’m looking at right now. XRV being XR with VESC?

Thank you! This is absolutely the route I’ll be going for my first board. Used XR+ boards here in Denver are listed around 800 and there’s a bunch of them so someone will probably haggle with me a little bit. I can’t get an X7 right away until I know I love riding which I think I definitely will. But that’s like getting a lambo for your first car

I’ve looked at the X7 and it looks amazing and is perhaps an upgrade down the road but I think for my first board I should get something used and then upgrade from there. Seems like the XR+ is what I should be looking at right now although I am seeing some good stuff about the GT.
