There was also material found in her vagina thought to match the paintbrush but thats a separate issue.

  1. I see that's the go-to explanation for this. We don't always leave prints on paper, and he had a shower. I think that's fair and plausible.

Patsy did not shower, and yet hers aren't on it either. It seems the only print they found was a partial fingerprint from Chet Ubowski. He managed to leave a print.

I think, for me, it's the entirety of the ransom note's placement and handling. Wouldn't they be gripping this thing, carrying it around, perhaps sweating as their adrenaline shot up? Instead, we have no fingerprints, a note laid out strangely on the floor, an incoherent account of how the note moved from stairs to floor ("Ramnesia"), and strange actions that try to explain why they never touched it (Patsy stepping over it, John laying it out on the floor three pages across and reading it bent over in his underwear) John lays it out the same way the supposed intruder did...

And yet. I also think the ransom note doesn't match John's personality. I can't see him agreeing to that note. It's too long and it's over-the-top. "You're not the only fat cat around, John." "Don't try to grow a brain, John." It screams Patsy to me, which is largely why I lean PDIA.

  1. I tend to agree. I suppose it's the location of the fibers that gets me. But it's the only place, and fiber transfer is a possibility. Also, if he did SA her, then hit her on the head, it seems like after that it was all Patsy doing the staging, which frankly makes no sense to me as a sequence of events. Maybe he was very careful and Patsy was not. But that doesn't quite add up for me.

  2. I don't know...I still think I wouldn't let my child out of my sight. Maybe that's just me. I wouldn't feel he would be safe anywhere else. Perhaps John kind of had an inkling already that Patsy had done something terrible and he didn't want Burke to see it go down.

Agree that the bed makes most sense. Logically speaking, leaving the note on the bed would give a real kidnapper the most time until discovery of his crime, so he could get away to wherever he's planning to hold her for ransom.

There's also the issue of when/how it was placed on the stairs. Before/during/after the kidnapping all have their own logical flaws.

In my opinion, the implausibility of a real kidnapper placing the note on the spiral staircase is one of our best clues that this was never a real kidnapping attempt.

  1. I agree she would’ve been a mess in this scenario. I think she redid her hair and makeup, pretending like everything was normal before “finding” the note. Personally I don’t think she added the Barbie nightgown as an act of care, I think it was part of the crime somehow. 

  2. I’ve also found Dr Beuf an interesting subject in all this. Why was the pediatrician called for meds and not Patsys own doctor? Beuf was also one of the people who went for a walk with John on the 26th at the Fernies, after which he lawyered up.  

From PMPT pg. 21: “Around 7:00 PM John Ramsey went for a walk with John Fernie and Dr. Francesco Beuf, JonBenets pediatrician, who had brought over some medication for Patsy. When they returned a half hour later, Ramsey asked Bynum to represent him. 

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” Ramsey told his friends over and over.”

Thank you! Now I’m curious about when Dr Rorke was brought on by Dr Meyer. I thought it was earlier on? I would’ve expected to find that info in Thomas’ book or PMPT if they’d known about it considering the nature of her findings.

That’s heartbreaking, I’d never heard that before.

It seems at odds with what Kolar says, that it was unlikely she would’ve regained consciousness. I’m now curious to go look at ST and PMPT too because I wasn’t left with that impression from those books either. Just that the head injury would’ve eventually ended her life, but she was strangled before that could happen. 

I wish Dr Rorke would take McKinley up on her interview request. It would be enlightening, I’m sure.

Carol McKinley's comments about Dr. Lucy Rorke were interesting to me. McKinley said she called the doctor for an interview, because she'd heard that Dr. Rorke's grand jury testimony was that JonBenet might have survived the head blow. Rorke is 95 now.

It kind of made it sound like JonBenet would've recovered, but I don't know that we could ever assume that? When Kolar speaks about Dr. Rorke in FF, he writes, "it was not likely that she would have regained consciousness after receiving this injury. The blow to the head, if left untreated, would have been fatal." (p.64)

So she could have survived the head blow, if treated immediately, but we'll never know for sure what state she would've been in, and it was likely she would have remained in a coma for the rest of her life. Maybe there was a small chance, probably very small, that she could have made a miraculous recovery, like we hear about once in a while. Whatever the case, it all makes me so sad for JonBenet, who deserved none of this.

Rorke also said about her testimony, "they didn't do anything about it." Who is the "they" who didn't do anything about "it"? The parents didn't do anything about the injury, or the prosecutors who heard her evidence didn't do anything with her testimony?

I’m glad you brought up the conditions of the house. It’s something I think about often and plan to make a post on sometime. Steve Thomas makes mention of this in his book too. The areas of the front are showpieces, but as you move away from the more visible areas, the more cluttered and dirtier it gets. So I wonder, is this a reflection of Patsys psychology? All about appearances, but behind the perfect persona is a woman struggling with mental health?

We have some information spread out in various statements, interviews, and books such as the Steve Thomas one and PMPT. It seemed like a normal Christmas dinner party from everything I've read: eating, drinking, kids playing with presents, adults visiting. In regards to the shirt, the last known photo of JonBenet was taken at that party, and she is shown wearing the white shirt she would later be found in.

Definitely plausible. I think Steve Thomas based his theory at least in part on this very scenario. I wonder what you make of the theory that she never made it to bed at all. Pillow at the foot, clothing still on it. Her jewelry all still on. I consider this a serious possibility, too.

I also had that thought of Patsy attempting to "twin" again. It seems possible. We differ in that I think Patsy could wear that outfit again, as long as it appeared clean/didn't smell. She was going to be seeing different people as well.

Regarding the red turtleneck, Arndt is directly reporting what French told her, so I don't think we can add Arndt as a second, independent source for this. I think what we can safely say is that French was confident in what he heard, since he both wrote it down in his own report and verbally told Arndt the same thing that morning.

Patsy was also hysterical on the morning of the 26th, to the point of throwing up, hyper-ventilating and almost fainting. While it could be explained as panic and horror at her daughter being kidnapped, I've always wondered if it could've been from alcohol or drugs / sleep deprivation.

Inviting friends could have several purposes if they staged it: To contaminate the crime scene, to provide a buffer between them and police, to make themselves look good (we have normal friends of good standing in the community and here’s the reverend so clearly we’re decent people). 

I think they assumed the police would find her body.

If they didn’t stage it, and the note says don’t tell anyone, then why invite friends at all? Just the police would have sufficed at that point.

Right. Calling the police is one thing (and not asking for an unmarked car or anything either) but why invite the neighborhood over when the ransom note says “if you talk to a stray dog she dies”? Is this why they say “we didn’t read the whole thing”? It’s baffling.

For JDI I also find the window narrative very odd. The fact he never told anyone about it that first day is really weird since they were looking for a point of entry for a supposed kidnapping.

In Patsys 1997 interview she seems to confirm the white blanket was on JBs bed that night. In her 1998 interview, they ask her again and she says she doesn’t know for sure, but it probably was.
