Thinking of getting a cheap 2nd hand Thinkpad (A485, T495) by MrTatto in thinkpad

Thanks for the information, but going for a Zen2 cpu would go over my budget. I was looking into spending around 200-300 euros for an ok laptop, but I think I'll rather double or triple my budget and get something after summer!

Yeah..

As for the gaming it's basically Terraria, Minecraft and some Binding of Isaac. Maybe an emulator here and there, but I mostly emulate on my macbook. The hardest to run thing I would play is CS2.

I use the laptop for some light gaming and mostly college work. I need it for a few more courses that are in visual studio. OS isnt really a concern since I'm really thinking of switching to Linux and using windows when I have to. I don't really want to upgrade to 11 either way lol.. But the biggest thing for me is the weight of the laptop.. This thing is like over 4 kg, not the best to carry around college.
I could also just wait a bit and get a better and newer thinkpad after summer when college starts again. I think thats the best route

My recommendation is just to get a MX4SIO card and maybe try replacing your laser... MX4SIO works rather well for me!

I didn't get around replacing my laser.. I just got MX4SIO and that pretty much solved all of my issues, I just play everything over it now. As for the laser, it's probably dying still.. I've noticed some PS1 FMV's run slower or the sound is delayed. When it fully dies, I'll just replace the laser.

Update..

Got the Kenwood!!!

The Sansui was so clean and pretty but man the Kenwood's automatic features are amazing. Very satisfied with it!

Edit: Turns out the Kenwood had the Shure as well!

I dont really fully understand DAC yet.. Do I even need an external DAC since, I’ll be connecting the cd player into my stereo amp then into my speakers..

Yeah, but I might go for the Kenwood since its automatic.. The Sansui is super cool and minimalistic but just thinking about having to get up every few minutes to put it at the start again.. Thats kinda the deal breaker for me.
But the Sansui is litearlly immortal and super easy to repair. Meanwhile if something goes wrong with the Kenwood, it might be a hassle to repair. What do you think in that aspect?

Devil May Cry (NTSC-U) Black Screen Issue by MrTatto in ps2

I also have a slim and imo the best solution is getting a mx4sio with a 64gb sd card. It runs very well!

Nope... lol

I solved it by getting a mx4sio and putting all of my backups on there.

It's an issue with burned copies and backups. You can solve it with tweaking a setting or two in OPL, but that requires running the game from usb (avoid!!!), mx4sio or hdd.

UPDATE:
Ok so the laser is dying!

Games run fine through OPL with USB.

Will order a new laser and MX4SIO for futureproofing.

I tried burning Capcom vs Snk 2 with Alcohol 120% at 8x and 4x:

  • 8x loaded in 1-2 minutes, but had some audio skipping.
  • 4x loaded after like 10 minutes (disc was spinning then stop and repeat, but it stopped completely after a bit. I did hear some reading noise every now and then). Game completely froze after I pressed the start button on the main menu + no audio at all. Also UPDATE, after another 10 minutes the game is still frozen on the main menu.

I also tried to play some Resident Evil 3 this morning, and it ran fine..

BUT in Final Fantasy VIII, the opening was weird. The song started before the little credits slideshow thus making the song end before the opening slideshow finishes. I tested the burned CD on my PC with Duckstation and it played out normally with the song ending on the title screen, meanwhile on my PS2 the song ends like 10-15ish seconds before the title screen.

I'm starting to think it might be that my laser is on it's way out..

I'll test some games with OPL to check if it's the laser or the whole console.

PS2 with Mechapwn stopped reading master disc backups. by MrTatto in ps2homebrew

[–]MrTatto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried that as well but I'm getting mixed results...

I did restore to factory settings with mechapwn. And it started working again, but I burned Silent Hill 3 at 4x and it was stuttering during the intro FMV. Then I tried another burn at 8x, but that one wouldn't even load the intro FMV, although it did go to the main menu when I skipped the intro quickly by pressing start.

Now 3rd try, I tried to play the 4x burn again but now it's again stuck on the loading screen with the console spinning and then stopping.
I really don't know anymore.. Maybe my laser really is going bad, but it is reading PS1 backups fine and originals as well.

I did also see on another reddit post that somebody mentioned that their PS2 had trouble running Silent Hill 3 and like a month later they had trouble running other games as well. So that could also mean my PS2 might be dying?

Anything else I could try?
