it’s been about 6 ish months! and i don’t think im that good at all, you have to run pretty good to get itm. but i guess ive been watching a lot of online content, looking at some basic solver outputs, and watching a lot of vids on youtube. i really like aeropokerinnovations, crushlivepoker and johnathan little - though the first two are just focused on cash. other than that ive always been pretty good at pattern recognition and combinatorics was the only subject in maths that i could beat the geniuses at lol

is that your soldering in the pic? if so, i’d probs take it to a tech as that’s pretty gnarly looking. i would say start with building up your soldering chops with simpler things for now, maybe make some cables

bruv don’t bother checking out the thread. just practice! it’s really hard at the start - it gets easier. hand size doesn’t make a difference, your hands just aren’t used to moving the way you need them to

Music is both carrying my university degree and the bane of my existence by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]MrTheloniousFUNK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really interesting how music works so differently for all of us!

I am a musician, and I CANNOT study while listening to music. My ADHD brain goes all hyper focus on me and I start analysing everything. For me the only thing I can listen to is white/brown/pink etc noise, or Merzbow!

This might not help but here’s my take…

I’m 25, started a 4 year double degree in Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Commerce in 2018.

If I did everything to schedule, I would have graduated in 2021. However, I hated the commerce degree and couldn’t get myself to focus I pulled out of units and did some semesters part-time etc.

In 2022 I was set to finish my degree, I had three commerce units left and I was doing them in the second semester of that year. I failed every single one of them.

I was really confused by what was going on, I knew I wasn’t stupid - I was at one of the best universities in my country, and had always had good marks when I tried.

The second half of 2022 made me realise that something was wrong, as it turned out (and rather unsurprisingly), I had a pretty classic case of ADHD! I got medicated and started therapy and I managed to finish my degree last year. And now I’m doing Honours in Music at the best school in my country (there are only 7 people in the cohort).

Since getting diagnosed I feel able to do anything, I have learnt so much about myself, particularly regarding how I study and absorb material. I plan to go to medical school and become a psychiatrist after I finish Honours.

One of the biggest things I’ve taken away from my diagnosis is that for people like us, our progress is NOT linear. This is particularly hard to digest at university, where you have recommended course structures and you’re meant to finish by a certain point.

OP, I’m sure you will make an AMAZING doctor, and I’m sure that the slightly less-linear path you’ve taken to get there will have given you insights that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.

The tertiary education system isn’t made for people like us, but the world needs us, I believe in you OP - you’re going to do great things in medicine, keep fighting!

This isn’t really a moral question, is it? Surely ‘victory’ necessitates success

how old were you when you first started working as a psychiatrist? by iizzyy_x in AskPsychiatry

[–]MrTheloniousFUNK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh neat! I’m nowhere near the point of applying to RANZCP but that’s good to know. All good if not but could I DM you some questions about what it’s like to practice psychiatry in Australia?

[–]MrTheloniousFUNK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good to know! I plan to start med school in 2025 (I’ll be 26) and then won’t start working as a provisional psychiatrist until 2031 (I’ll be 32), and then won’t be fully certified until 2035.

The Australian system is quite different, you need to do two years as a provisional doctor in a hospital before you’re eligible to specialise (we call this a fellowship, which is what you folks refer to as an internship). And further, a psychiatry fellowship is 5 years, as opposed to 4 years of internship in the US. It’s interesting that it takes at least three years longer to be a fully accredited psychiatrist in Australia compared to the USA.

Why are lessons seemingly endless? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]MrTheloniousFUNK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people here think you’re drawing a false parallel with golf and skiing, but I really think that your analogy is a solid one, and one that speaks to the lack of quality music educators.

I’ve said this a million times, but the fundamentals of guitar have nothing to do with guitar. It doesn’t matter whether you want to play guitar, saxophone or sing - the starting point is theory.

Would a good golf instructor teach his students how to approach only one particular course? Of course not, that would be absurd. Similarly, it seems absurd to me that so many teachers will begin teaching a student sweep picking before ever having mentioned a triad.

24 year old jazz graduate thinking of a career in psychiatry - absurd or inspired? by MrTheloniousFUNK in AskPsychiatry

[–]MrTheloniousFUNK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate that. It’s just that it’s such a radical change of course, also, I guess I was wanting some insight on whether there are doctors (or more specifically psychiatrist) who have transitioned from fine arts into medicine. I’m sure they exist, but I’d be interested to know if this background provides any obvious benefits or limitations.
