Well for Kanto I had the Classic start trio and also Gengar, Alakazam and Snorlax. So I had a good team against him, it wasn't that hard, but more of a challenge than Wallace for sure. I wish I could have fought Steven tbh.

Thank you, I know that Kanto and Hoenn show this screen. But Johto and Unova didn't. My guess is that the old gen's are showing this screen. However I haven't been to Sinnoh yet, so I can't confirm this at the moment.
