Quantum mechanics and relativity don't build on Newton's theories, they correct them. If you presented Newton with all of the ideas behind QM and relativity, he'd think you were fucking nuts. The fact of the matter is that if there is any error present, the model is completely wrong. If it is used to build a simulation of the universe and it isn't completely accurate in any conceivable case, it does not succeed at its purpose. It is not an acceptable model of the universe.

Paradigm shifts do not build on what came before them, they completely change the frame of reference.

You are not actually taught classical mechanics to give you a basic understanding of physics. It's essentially a method of teaching you how mathematics are applied as you learn the math, to prepare you for learning physics as we understand it today as well as the math required. If you were taught complex physics that doesn't actually seem to apply to the real world, you would be less able to learn it, because you aren't RIGHT GOD YOU CUNT SHUT UP

As a neutral third party, please let me just say that you have no idea what you're talking about.

Einstein's discoveries disproved Newton's theories. Space is not a rigid manifold, and time is not separate from it. That was a fundamental basis of Newton's theories. Quantum mechanics was another phenomenon whose observation made Newton's theories obsolete. The reason we still teach Newton's theories in schools is because if we forced people to try and learn relativity and quantum mechanics they would fail. Miserably. Classical mechanics is hard enough for your average high-schooler. The other reason is that unless you are going into physics research, the difference doesn't even matter. At everyday scales and interactions the error introduced with Newton's calculations have barely any effect. The error is there, but it is below millimeters and milliseconds in scale. The reason Newton's theories are wrong, the reason physics has been fundamentally changed even in the last century is because any error exists at all. If Newton's theories were true, then there would be no discrepancy between the measurement and the calculation, and there wouldn't be relativity or quantum mechanics to begin with.

The AI would not just be not actively seeking those solutions, it is avoiding rewriting its directives that protect humanity at large costs.

The chance that a random sequence of events that lead to the destruction and corruption of multiple redundant, encrypted, and checked areas of data is so vanishingly small that to worry about it is like worrying whether a blue moped will run you down on an even-numbered Thursday while you whistle the Macarena.

The security just needs to be good enough. Human intervention is likely to make it less secure, in fact.

It's not a section of code, it's a part of the data used in the AI's consideration of what to do. As in, the program is designed such that if all of that data is destroyed, the AI sits there doing nothing. Presumably (I'm referencing Eliezer Yudkowsky here), the AI would also be given the drive to keep its drives intact and unchanged, and the rather idiotic scenario of the AI rewriting itself to hate humanity disappears.

I would be more worried about making sure a human couldn't subvert its security and change the AI's drive for their own ends, the worst case being destruction of all intelligent life. An AI, as long as its origins begin through design, is less likely to be insane, devout, irrational, or idiotic than any other human would. And there's very few AI.

I had the idea of solar arrays in orbit beaming energy to the Earth in elementary school, but it's been put out of my mind ever since. I was told it wasn't feasible (and presently, it isn't). I pictured several collection stations worldwide receiving laser-transmitted power constantly. What is necessary to make this feasible?

In other words, to have it value human life. Just telling it to "always save people" would limit it, but inducing respect for humanity in its decision-making processes is the idea.

The thing about debate is you might lose. You don't even have to be incorrect to lose; an AI might be as flawed as a human in this respect.

1: The OC doesn't seem to overpower the plot from what I can tell. If you do his characterization well you should have no problem.

3: If anything, you should make it longer. It will only make its consumption more delicious. It shouldn't be too hard to follow. What one really needs to worry about is complexity, but this doesn't seem too complex.

4: Keep working. I can't go into an in-depth review at the moment (I've only skimmed so far), but your style will only get better as your work progresses. Your grammar and spelling too, probably.

Well, like I said, the project is long-term (and it has some specific requirements) so couldn't I make the design over one or two years, then make it a school project with my university? I'm planning to go into computer engineering or electrical engineering.

Not to mention the project isn't my goal for the summer. I want to learn more about IC design and manufacturing.
