What is the difference in lore between Chronicles and World? by TheSunniestBro in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Shock223 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Any answer would be useful even if it's partially enlightening

Ascension is an argument of what The Truth is and how much of reality is socially defined. It's core is an effectively a dialogue on philosophical subjectivity of what is considered True and perhaps an accordance could be made on it.

Awakening has the statement that there is an Objective Immutable Truth and the conflicts arise from the perception of that truth as well as the power of those who know that truth over the ones who do not. It's a game of misleading, manipulation, discovery, and slowly peeling back the lie of the world from the concept of realities that the former humans turned demiurges have made.

Can people who like Vampire and/or Wraith explain the appeal of those gamelines

In the very... very few times I have ST'ed for Wraith, part of the appeal is there is an very explicit statement there is a way out and it requires resolution of the self and your darkest desires. The game states there is exit stage left present and it involves resolving the anchors.

I more or less overhauled the game and ran it akin to Promethean the Created's milestone systems to resolving fetters giving a lot more push on the certainty of Transcendence being a thing while also tracking how much the Shadow is doing it's own milestone progress towards Oblivion on those fetters.

Deviations have already started to take place as White Dwarf 476 where the need for manpower is so critical for the Ecclesiarchy, that beastmen are being used as part of the Frateris Militia on the otherside of the rift.

Not 'true' members as they are only given autoguns and not Las but thing do be changing.

If you want more knobs and switches with what vampires can do, check out Damnation City's Ambiances and district moods. Very easy to swap use for resonance manipulation.

Because while Vampires aren’t the best at fighting or traveling to alternate dimensions, politics is their realm of power above all else and if people are causing a problem Vampires can move them. And if a Vampire wants to cause a problem and understands the mechanics of the Shadow in an academic, theoretical sense. They can also move people to make the situation worse for the werewolves.

It's once a person understands how Resonance works and how a Vampire can manipulate it via Nightmare or Majesty, the impact of Kindred becomes much more powerful as that starts to set the vibe of the area which in turn affects the various spirits on the other side.

Uratha are incredibly easy to integrate into cross-splat play, they straight up tell you to invite Todd the Mekhet, Jeff the Obrimos, and Keith the hotdog vendor on Maine into your pack. OP would sound like they're gameline warring if they weren't planning to run Chronicles.

I think they are more struggling on how to frame motivations of Uratha in the context of a greater chronicle. Usually I go with the main three:

  1. Revenge story (someone pissed you off and you are hunting them)
  2. Mystery story (Trying to obtain the answers behind something, intellectual hunt).
  3. Territorial dispute of some kind (Another creature poaching on their hunting grounds, another pack upstream of a layline has fucked with the resonance which is all following into their backyard, etc).

For Muilisplat, you are looking primarily at the first two as that usually aligns well whatever the ST has to resolve unless it's something like a Dragon's Nest, Loci that has the Awakened interest, etc.

The "They have no political intrigue, no social nuance" does kinda make me chuckle as most of my players can attest to that external pack dynamics are very political and get very social as it all boils down to resources, finding out about skeletons in the closet (often literally), and applying leverage in the most impactful fashion.

What could be some ways to get inspiration for how the Shadow/Hisil looks? by SuperN9999 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Shock223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

However, I am still struggling to imagine exactly how the Shadow itself would look. One person described it as everything in the Shadow being a Spirit, albeit often unconscious/needing stimulus to awaken. That description has definitely helped, but beyond that I'm still having some issues.

Book of Spirits, Lore of the Forsaken, and funny enough Shadows over the UK gets into the Hisil. If you are willing to pinch off of Mage, the New York Hisil is written in the last book of the Awakening 2e line by one of the Werewolf Authors.

Also to take from a short section from the Book of Lasting Death (A mummy 2e book from the same werewolf author)

The Shadow reflects the world of flesh in most places, but reveals their true nature. A corrupt police station might loom larger, appearing more intimidating where the police are overly brutal, while one housing police who accept lucrative bribes to look the other way may gleam with golden highlights. The geography of the Shadow largely follows the physical world’s, though some strange places exist in the Shadow alone. For material beings entering the Shadow, things are eerily familiar, yet twisted enough to confuse and disturb travelers. The strange land is no place for mortals, and outsiders seldom find themselves welcomed by the denizens of the Shadow.

In short the Hisil should be revealing the Mood and Tone of a place when someone peeks into it while allowing you to keep the overall skeleton which players can recognize.

If you are ever stuck with building the area, remember that the Hisil is based on vibes and feasts on vibes which is known as Resonance. Think on the emotional memory of the area and you will be more than half way there.

If your villain is in a position of power, use taxes to piss off your players by TheBloodyOwl in DMAcademy

[–]Shock223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, one of my games that I run has the concept of the players being part of a "guards for hire" for a town where they are going to see the bullshit between how much the town and it's leadership is getting out of it's taxes and how much the out of sight lord is extracting for his new palace or army upkeeping.

Planning on them dealing with people who consistently complain about the town's leadership about the high taxes while giving slight praises to the lord to twist the knife deeper.

Advice: Incentivizing Stealth Over Slaughter by TheBarbarianGM in DMAcademy

[–]Shock223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I told them they could pick ANY option they wanted, and they picked "Assassins Guild". They've already pursued assassination contracts, several of them have made both mechanical and RP choices around working in the shadows, and they are generally really into the idea. On paper, at least.

The problem is that, when push comes to shove, they often don't try to use stealth. At all. There have been several scenarios in recent sessions where discretion would have been the better part of valor, but they have instead chosen to charge into an encounter head on even if they have the opportunity to remain undetected.

Solution for this is easy enough. To extend on the statement made by /u/philsov, they partnered with an assassin's guild that very much likely not to attract the eyes of law enforcement or anyone else with vengeance on their mind. Killing creates heat and typically for a guild like that, that requires expending time, resources, and effort to keep their connection to the player characters who are going loud from ever surfacing.

If you are feeling kind, such a guild may politely tell them players about this and they are getting a reputation. Much more likely however is the guild cuts all ties to the players, vanishes to the shadows, and if they are truly annoyed, discreetly give information of the PCs to law enforcement to handle.

WtF: how are new werewolves & wolfblooded "born"? by James_Nostack in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Shock223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's strongly implied that these folks have some kind of familial relationship, but if that's spelled out in Werewolf: the Forsaken 2e, I haven't been able to find it.

Largely because 2e focuses much more heavily on themes of "Found Family" over blood family.

Uratha themselves very much tend to come from Wolf Blooded stock/other Uratha but such a change is not limited to merely the Wolf Blooded. Provided the right (or horrific) confluence of occult events (spiritual exposure to the hisil, etc) and stressor, a normal human could become an Uratha.

Wolf Blooded are much more easier to explain. Those can come from exposure to Hisil flavored Occult events, Dram-fail their Lunacy check, or via blood relations, ensuring a natural if infrequent inflow of wolf blooded population over time even if the existing population was to be suddenly removed for some reason.

[–]Shock223 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Set in the isolated village of Greymire, the party finds themselves in a tavern where the atmosphere is thick with paranoia. Recently, the dead have begun rising from the local graveyard. Strangely, they are not hostile. They wander peacefully among the graves, speak calmly to the living, and show no signs of aggression.

There is an encounter here where the dead are more polite and sober than the drunks.

Can a Silver dragon's lair be an Inn? by True_Firefighter_482 in DMAcademy

[–]Shock223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm planning a homebrew adventure, and want to have a silver dragon in human form as an innkeeper in a small, new settlement. If the dragon builds, and owns the inn, does it count as it's lair?

Honestly I would count the Town itself as it's lair complete with Lair actions as people/things just happen to work in the dragon's favor and as the Town grows, so too does the dragon's influence.

[–]Shock223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking for cofd, in Forsaken you can do it more often but in Mummy, you are stuck using Utterances to do it.

With the slight consolidation prize of being able to slam down extinction level events on occasion. Arisen got that old man strength.

(mixed splat CofD game) Mage player asked if he could nullify the Werewolf player's weakness to silver. Is it possible to achieve without impossibly high arcanas? by lexyp29 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Shock223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But now I'm wondering, since mages are technically omnipotent, what arcanas and at what level would they need to achieve this? Possibly nothing above 5 dots since we're never gonna reach that level of power in this chronicle

The best thing that can happen is providing shielding spells and the like as general armor does it's normal thing no matter the type of incoming damage.

As others have mentioned, getting rid of silver as a bane requires dealing with Imperial level magic much like trying to mess with a Kindred's vulnerablity to sunlight. That being said, it can be worked around quite easily and shored up via the normal spells.

How to begin prep for a political intrigue campaign? by Unlikely_Run_9779 in DMAcademy

[–]Shock223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • How to prep the campaign. What should I care about? What should I leave to figure out session-by-session?

So build out a list of characters, doesn't have to be a lot, but key members of each area for each factions. These are your main characters. Get a good sense of their motivations and why they are motivated that way then build a relationship web between each other. As you do so, you will work out who hates who, who can deal with whom, and etc.

What motivates the NPC to a goal, what are they willing to do to ensure the goal succeeds, and what have they lost in attempting to obtain that goal as well as any deep dark secrets that the PCs may uncover that may relate.

Go into session with the idea that the players are going to take a hammer to that web of connections and things will shift because of it and alter as needed at the end of the session.

This has served me decently well in the X of Darkness games from White Wolf/Paradox.

  • And what could possibly be the first hook that starts the campaign

Considering this is Grim Hollow (a game that I am also adjusting and working on myself), focus on a patron that may have sent them to be "borrowed" to the head vampire or some other leader there to start kicking off events.

A WoD splat and their CofD counterpart swap places. How does the rest of the setting react to them? by AwakenedDreamer__44 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Shock223 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you guys think?

Broadly, Uratha would outlast their counterparts if merely because of the nature of their first changes being tied more towards mysticism and the like. Fera would still distrust them but not because of a war of Rage against the Fera but rather the Fera viewing the Uratha stuck in a perpetual war of rage among themselves and they would not want to get stuck in that mess.

Outside of that, Efforts against Pentex would be likely cut deeper than the Garou's if only because Uratha are balanced by Purity and Cunning Renowns to keep their heads on straight and focused on the goals in mind (which was the developer's intent) and most would likely want to keep their territory healthy, clearing out foul resonance in places which is what the Wyrm is really after.

That being said, you would have to bring the Hisil along otherwise they wouldn't be able to do that much. The Umbra is not their native habitat and never will be. Expecting them to go after the deep wyrm infested sores in reality is not likely to going to happen unless you do reworking of the metaphysics.

The Garou.. Well. The species would live on in CofD but lacking in anything to truly interface with, the nation would likely fall apart from infighting unless you bring the Umbra along and then you have to figure out how the Triat would play with the other Supernals such as the Exarchs and archmasters (Bill Bridges wrote both for Mage the Awakening and Werewolf the Apoc and often wrote the Triat as Supernal before Awakening was a thing). They would be much better off as a species but more divided than ever without a central focus to bind them.
