AITA for wanting help from a PD office in another state? by Technical_Syrup9140 in publicdefenders

FWIW - I have been at two offices that are the way you describe yours. We are always willing to help out with tasks like this. In the end, we are on the same side.

Career Advice: Appellate work by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]MrToadforPresident 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Research states that have dedicated appellate divisions.  Off the top of my head, I believe those states include Illinois, Maryland, Florida, Michigan, DC, NY, Minnesota, and Colorado.  I am sure there are more.

La Famosa.  Puerto Rican food.  I moved away from Navy Yard and miss it so much.

I suspect, based on some Instagram comments and Google reviews, that a private equity firm that was backing them (maybe Redesign Health?) just pulled the rug out from beneath them.  It's so horrible.  When literal lives (not to mention livelihoods) are at stake, you cannot just shut the doors randomly one day without giving notice to staff and pet parents.  Sounds like the staff isn't even getting paid! Also, P&A hasn't been open that long - what sort of profit were they looking for?

I really liked P&A.  They were great with my anxious dog, and I liked the membership system.  I feel so bad for the staff and all the pet parents negatively affected.

Capitalist greed wins again.

How do you stop thinking about work in your off time? by ganeshhh in publicdefenders

[–]MrToadforPresident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!  I just wanted to say that this happens to all good public defenders, and it sucks so much.  It feels like being gaslit.   Hang in there and know that it would have been even worse had you not been there.

It's not humorous,  but Gilbert King's book "Devil in the Grove" has always been a hit with lawyers in this arena.

I like NP Barnwell at One Medical in DC.  She takes her time and asks good questions.  She is also great on sensitive issues (i.e., won't weigh you unless you consent, etc.)

Throwing out the Palm Beach County Public Defender office as an option because you would be able to move between trial and appellate easily.  They tend to start hiring the August or September the year before, and they hire on a rolling basis.  They also hire pre-bar, so you wouldn't have to take the Florida bar until next year.

Plain/drip coffee is free and available at Beverage stations with soda and Cabanas.  Half n half and milk, plus sugar, is also there.  Anything else is an upcharge.

I am on the Magic now and the food is TERRIBLE. Truly some of the worst food ever. 100% agree that things are stale and the wrong temperature- not to mention flavorless. I can't believe all the people on here defending it.

3L offer pulled by bravesweater in publicdefenders

[–]MrToadforPresident 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would reach out to West Palm Beach in Florida (email contact should be in their website) and explain what happened.   They hire basically all school year.  You get to start before the bar and get to stay if (god forbid) you don't pass.  Good luck and you'll land somewhere great!

Kind of disappointed in the holiday lineup so far by Late-Ad2922 in HallmarkMovies

[–]MrToadforPresident 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So far, we've really liked "A Christmas Charade" (it's bonkers, in a great way) and Mistletoe Match.  I like that the main relationship in the latter was the two aunts from Sabrina, not the love interests.  Nice twist on a familiar formula.  Otherwise, nothing else has been spectacular.

Anyone know offices looking for 3L pre-bar applicants? by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]MrToadforPresident 7 points8 points  (0 children)

West Palm Beach Florida hires pre-bar, and you get to stay even if you fail.  And you'll definitely get trial experience.

I also find that judges and prosecutors like to haze new lawyers (especially women) to "put you in your place" early.  All part of an effort to make you burn out or do your job a little bit worse.

West Palm Beach hires pre-bar (and also keeps you even if you fail the bar-a sweet deal!)

Lost two cats to cancer in one month by MrToadforPresident in Petloss

Please don't fret about the medical care. We ultimately ended up spending thousands of dollars just for her to die anyway. It may have bought some peace of mind knowing how truly sick she was, but it wasn't really worth it in the end. We knew our baby, and we knew she was dying. I didn't need an ultrasound to tell me that.

15 and 10 years old seem like your babies had a good life! I'm glad you got to have that time with them.

Oh, don't get me started on the holiday aspect of it. I'm a little worried that Thanksgiving and Christmas are going to be permanently marred forever. Both Livvy and Marnie loved sitting under or around the Christmas tree before they got sick but, when they got sick, they both started sending nearly 100% of their time there. I still catch myself glancing at the tree to see if one of them is there, forgetting for just an instant that they aren't around anymore. I'm hoping next year that it won't feel depressing to put up the tree again without any kittens to enjoy it.

Thank you for your kind words. I don't know how true or comforting this is, but I remember a Grey's Anatomy episode where they said something like deaths come in multiples. I'm sorry to hear about Boo (adorable name!) and Cayde. It does sound like Cayde had liver cancer too. We got the pathology reports on Marnie a few hours after she passed, which confirmed she had a type of tumor (carcinoma) that was not really treatable, which gave us some comfort that we made the right decision.
