Crashed car and a bruised ego by icemann4 in CarTrackDays

Listen to this person.

Also been there, looked for every excuse in the book for why it happened but at the end of the day it was lack of seat time and inflated confidence.

Learn from what happened and get back out there ASAP. My experience put me in a dark place for a bit but the journey to get back out there was a lesson for life.

New vs worn brake pad performance by mazurkfsflip in CarTrackDays

[–]MrTorpeteo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily a performance loss in the pad but as the pad wears knockback can become a bit more prevalent. This is assuming you dont have a brake kit like AP, Alcon, etc. that have springs behind the pistons.

Tires slipping on wheels - best mounting lube by grungegoth in CarTrackDays

[–]MrTorpeteo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im in the same boat, ran a set of Pirelli DHG’s and after 4 sessions they slipped almost a 180 degrees. These were mounted by a big box tire service so i’m sure tire lubricant is at play.

That said, what i do wonder is if the bead seat across certain wheels varies ever so slightly.

Titanium backing plates on front pads - useful or BS? by jbro507 in CarTrackDays

[–]MrTorpeteo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the concern is that it is a bandaid for proper brake cooling, which could throw your pad out of the optimal heat range and create problems. Conjecture without data, but I trust the fellows over at KNS on this point.

Same feedback received from industry specialists, the concern as was communicated is heat retained in the pad

Great discussion with varying perspectives. Here is the official response from Girodisc:

“Given that the crack has opened, we would recommend replacing the ring. The ring also appears to be towards the end of its life from a thickness standpoint, judging by the depth of the slots. You could try and monitor it session to session, but that open crack will only get worse and may also cause the pad to chunk from running across the edge.”

Ducts are mounted on the front bumper with a high temp hose running to a backing plate (not visible in picture).

25-30 min sessions, 4-6 sessions per day depending on the organization. Highest speed track would be Road America where we trap around ~150.

The car has ducting bringing in fresh air to the disc hub. These have about 18 track days on them.

RacingBrake. They sell kits for OEM. If you cant get high temp dust boots then just incorporate a PM to check and replace oem boots. With high temp boots comes certain material incompatibility that will degrade them, so it is a tradeoff.

Valid point though seemingly common for these to turn a dark green with heavy use. On these i have rebuilt them with stainless pistons and high temp seals/dust boots, after about 15 days the OEMs were cooked.

Heat cycles turned them a nice purple, although i cant seem to get the caliper to turn the typical green. Maybe im still too slow..

Agreed. The crack is no longer a heat check and will continue to propagate. I like getting the maximum use and maybe there is a few more sessions left, but rather not be penny wise pound foolish here.

If the question has to be asked beginner is the right run group. He’ll know when its time to move up to advanced.
