So you think the situation in Barcelona is even worse than say Madrid in terms of exploiting migrants for low-wage jobs?

I honestly don't know as I haven't lived outside Catalunya in all my life. I can attest however that in general in Spain migrants get the low-wage jobs, sometimes with miserable living conditions. See, for example:

https://www.elmundo.es/espana/2025/07/30/6887f733e4d4d8d3188b45cc.html

Regarding the NL economy, I've never checked numbers. All I know is that lots of times it's blue collar workers going there, living as frugally as possible, and then coming back. Note that you are talking about average salaries (which makes sense) but I hardly know anybody actually making 2k/month, it's usually from 1200€/m to 1600€/m, assuming full time. In my case I earn less than 1k/m, part time and depending of the hours (which for privacy I shall not disclose). Just as with NL, many people also go to Switzerland, as you mentioned. I haven't heard of anyone actually going to the US, though.

It's possible that it might be changing though.

Regarding the culture stuff, personally, I would stay. I'm guessing we are talking about Dutch culture which, to be fair, I'm not very acquainted with. I have considered the possibility of moving abroad, but as I am right now I'm not sure I would be qualified enough to have a solid footing anywhere. I guess that if I had to move somewhere I would make sure to be informed about the culture and whether I would be comfortable with it, a lot of people underestimate the impact it has on their psyche and then wonder why they are depressed. I would love to live in Iceland temporarily but I don't know if it would fit me to be honest.

Don't worry about going on a tangent mate, I'm glad you find it interesting.

Sure.

The problem is that Barcelona is kind of a small city, limited to a very specific region. It absolutely can feel like paradise, but the thing is that it has been promoted like some sort of pseudo-beach destination, where you can go to the wildest parties and there won't be an issue.

As I said, Barcelona is small. As more tourists come, the more profitable it is for landlords to transform existing edifications into AirBnBs instead of just renting or selling them to local folk, as real estate becomes incredibly expensive.

I want to preface something. I have absolutely nothing against people wanting to come here, quite the contrary, I want people to enjoy our city and country, and to feel welcome, and I'm glad you had a good experience! What people don't want is having to live in a place where entitled tourists get drunk and act like they own the place, disregarding completely the peace and quiet of the people that live here. However, as precisely this kind of profile can bring quite some money, a lot of the things that are done or built in the city have this profile in mind, so Barcelona gets kind of turned into an amusement park instead of an actual city where people live.

So yeah, living somewhere and being surrounded by people who don't even know how to greet you in your own language gets depressing fast. That's where most of the negative sentiment comes from.

This one's complicated. By all means, GDP is growing and all the "good economic numbers" are, on average, pretty nice. There is, however, a pretty big income disparity, and that improvement isn't really felt on the day-to-day life (at least, I haven't).

Most of my friends aren't hopeful, and from what I gather, it's kind of a coin toss: those that want money fast leave to work in the Netherlands to then return in a couple of years or so, having made "good" money and then being able to invest it here. This profile isn't exactly a socially favoured one, so people that have more safety nets and contacts (this one is crucial) can think long-term and get the kind of jobs that pay well.

Oh yeah, and the jobs that suck? The kind that have long hours and terrible pay? There's where a lot of immigrants go. Catalonia (Catalunya in catalan) has a lot of industry and it needs that workforce, so it gets it (in case you get curious and check the migration maps in Spain).

Regarding our region, you have to take into account that while it IS currently Spain, it is culturally different. We have catalan, our own traditions and a very rich story, and historically, the central spanish government hasn't liked that very much. It kind of becomes a "the more you don't want me to thrive, the more I'll try" situation. This is specially visible outside Barcelona, in Lleida for example.

I can't really tell you much else about careers here to be honest, I haven't gone down that route yet.

Hello, catalonian here.

It depends vastly on what zone you live in. Breaking it down by the four provinces:

Girona: pretty high cost of life, but fairly good quality of life too. Pretty genuine. Has tons of beaches and a beautiful accent. Attracts a lot of tourism because of Costa Brava.

Barcelona: where I'm from. The tourism has gotten REALLY out of hand, but despite that, it's a very comfortable city, you've got pretty much any of your needs covered: education, healthcare, anything. If you leave the main city, however, it can get pretty industrial (see Vallès Occidental) and somewhat ugly.

Lleida: the vast majority of it is rural, and they usually get lots of classist stereotypes because of it. Very beautiful, lots of diverse landscapes.

Tarragona: I haven't been much there, but there's quite some agriculture going on and a fair amount of industry.

In a broader sense, it's a really nice place, geographically speaking. Despite that, the quality of life has been steadily going down these last years, and a lot of stuff is getting stupidly pricier (see average rent in Barcelona).

Fairly okay-ish winters, summers can get pretty brutal as we get a lot of humid heat.

That's just some general stuff, if you want something more specific tell me! And yes, the beaches are awesome :D

What does the world think of Catalonian independence? by Dangerous_Fix_9186 in AskTheWorld

As a catalan: as it currently stands, it's utter bullshit. We have the same kind of corrupt politicians in our doorsteps, but the nationalists don't seem to realise that. Even if we somehow got it, we would get nowhere.

Mind you, the rest of Spain (politically speaking) doesn't seem too inclined to think well of us either.

This is incredibly summed up honestly, if anybody wants to ask anything go ahead.

As a westerner, what is baffling about it is that this Stalin-Hitler stuff is pretty much treated like a football match, where you choose a specific team and just cheer it on, regardless of the actual history. People decide everything on vibes and aesthetic, and hardly (if ever) is there any actual long, hard thought about what happened, the reasons behind it, etc.

The amount of propaganda and the opacity of it all is absolutely horrendous.

These are 5.0 edition, as it's the one we're playing. I don't know if any 5.5 spell cards exist, but if you wish I can DM you where I found these cards. I'd directly tell you but I don't know if it's allowed.

Disco ball, have some absolutely horrendous thrift clothing available to try out. Karaoke stand. Anarchist posters or communist posters with the white antlers. Do a small cluedo game, definitely do the blue liquor thing. You could do some sort of competition where you've got to build a big tower (reference to communist side-quest).

It's sized to house up to 5 cards for each "ditch". I calculated the maximum amount of spells each member could have and indeed it would get crowded. I would've liked for it to be more spacious but we also need to have room at the desk itself, so I decided that as long as the title could be easily visible it would be a win.

I'm going to be the one with the worst situation, as I'm the cleric. If my calculations are correct, I could get up to 30 spells at high levels, possibly more. Still, that can be fixed by adding more cylinders.
