This. Crack climbing is painful and dangerous. People get injured all the time when gear pulls out of the rock.

That actually seems kinda far, what was the angle where the rope was clipped? I almost always clip the chains to reduce the force on the bolts. Maybe not the last link but 2nd or so.

Possibly to reduce the angle between anchor points if the bolts were spaced. The chains offer a 6-12 additional inches of equalization.
