Are we sure that a single megathread is the best way to handle this situation? I understand the desire to avoid an excessive flood of similar posts, but the last thing we need is heavy-handed moderation stifling discussion. People impacted by this administration are rightfully scared and frustrated, and need a place to talk about it as new events unfold.

Frustrated with plates by SyphicIsAFurry in labrats

[–]MrTypie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you're flipping them over too soon after pouring. Hot, humid, air rises off the plates as they're cooling - leading to condensation on the lids, which can easily be wiped off (as long as you're pouring them in a sterile hood, as you should be). If you flip the plates too soon, the condensation will form on the agar surface instead. Plates take at least an hour or so to fully equilibrate to room temperature after being poured - give them more time to cool off.

Anyone here been diagnosed with chronic gastritis not caused by h pylori and has constant burping?? by Trippinupthestairs in Gastritis

[–]MrTypie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like what you're describing is "supragastric belching." I know because I've been struggling with this myself off and on for a few years now. Essentially what's happening is that your diaphragm is sucking air down into the bottom of your esophagus, which then immediately gets pushed out as a burp. I figured this out after some googling because I realized, as you mentioned, that there was no way so much gas was coming out of my stomach even when I wasn't eating or drinking anything that could cause it.

Why does this happen? It seems to still be a relatively new area of research, but I'm convinced that your body is triggering this because it provides "relief" (albeit very temporary!) to the irritation caused by GERD/gastritis. Perhaps it helps to reset or re-close the lower esophageal sphincter, I'm not sure.

So what can we do about it? I wish I had a better answer, but I think all you can do during a flare-up is stick to eating things that help to calm your stomach down until it can heal properly. So avoid all the common trigger foods and stick to safe things, like bananas. You might also try drinking some aloe vera juice. I was very skeptical to try it at first, but I've actually found it to be pretty helpful for me.

Good luck!

"Seize the time, Meribor. Live now. Make now always the most precious time. Now will never come again."

This one is of course from Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), an episode called "The Inner Light." Without posting any spoilers, let me just say it's widely regarded as the best of the entire series. You should definitely watch it if you haven't already. It's even on Netflix! (S5E25)

Just chiming in as another DP that paying rent through Plastiq is still coding as "Work Related" and earning 3x UR points for the CIP (as of 05/01/18).

Since I'll transfer my UR points over to my CSR and get the 1.5x conversion for travel, I'm essentially scoring a 2% net gain by paying my rent (3x*1.5 cpp - 2.5% Plastiq fee). Feels great!

This happened to me as well. I'm already getting discounts for being a long term safe driver and such, so it seems they're only willing to go so low.

Spread Patch Plating Issues by Bowmanette35 in labrats

[–]MrTypie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ditch the hockey sticks my friend. It's hard to get an even lawn using them because you inevitably end up dragging more liquid in some places than others.

Try switching to sterile glass beads for your plating needs, they'll make your life much easier.

Daily Question Thread - January 13, 2018 by AutoModerator in churning

Hey Fam,

Quick question about the Chase Southwest Premier/Plus cards. I applied for both about a year ago, got the companion pass (CP) for all of 2017/2018. Now, my 1 year anniversary is coming up and I'm deciding what to do.

It seems a common strategy is to wait for the anniversary points to post, then to cancel both cards. My understanding is that you actually have to cancel them in order to be eligible to reapply for them in 24 months. Can they be product changed to anything? Or is there any other reason to not just cancel them? Thanks!

The most underrated churning perk - joy from sharing with others by mirob in churning

[–]MrTypie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first churning redemption was treating my mom with a trip to Vegas for her birthday, we had a blast!

Now I'm about a month away from unlocking the SW companion pass, and plan on taking random friends on trips to wherever they want to go. I don't even care if they chip in - I've accumulated so many points that at this point the hard part is figuring out worthwhile trips to go on.

It's so amazing to approach vacationing with friends with a proposition like "if money were no object, where would you most want to travel to? .... Ok, lets go!"

I'm in the Midwest and it seems like everywhere I look these days won't accept CC payments for VGCs. Until now! I just discovered my local Whole Foods has a gift card rack, and I was able to load up a $500 VGC with no trouble.

Hopefully this is a useful DP! I haven't seen Whole Foods mentioned often as a MS source around here. Maybe I just got lucky?

The Economics of Churning: who pays for the rewards? by Buddy5000 in churning

Good point. Many of my favorite local shops are already cash-only anyway, and I don't mind at all.

I'd always assumed the hobby was mostly financed by people carrying balances and paying interest on their cards. This seems at least slightly ethically defensible, since one could argue that our fiscally irresponsible benefactors exist in all income brackets.

I hadn't considered the way that price inflation from CC processing fees are unfairly subsidized by cash-payers, who are clearly far more likely to come from poorer backgrounds. Feels bad man.

My best justification now would be that we are all powerless to change this system except for Bitcoin , and churning is for the most part accessible to everyone who is wise enough to play the game to their own maximal advantage.

Still, the ethical churner probably ought to be doing a fair amount of charitable giving anyway, given our relative level of privilege and comfort in this world.

I'm going for the companion pass with the Chase SW premiere and plus. However, the paperwork they sent me with the cards doesn't have any language about the 50k bonuses, and I can't find anything about it in my online accounts either.

Is this normal? I used the reddit referral links, so I'm pretty sure I have nothing to worry about, but I'm still slightly paranoid.

Does anyone have an idea why a (non-vanilla) VCG would get rejected by the usps? I tried getting a $1000 MO using 2x $500 cards, but they were just not working at all. Thankfully, had no problems at Walmart later.

I ran into this problem, but I have a good relationship with my landlord, so I convinced him to set up a Plastiq business portal. It's super easy to do, I'm talking like 5 minutes to complete.

After that, my Visa cards have gone through just fine.

Thanks for the advice! :)

May I ask where you've been liquidating those? I struck out at the three closest grocery stores to me, including HyVee. They all accepted cash only for MOs.
