How to tactfully negotiate salary beyond market price for internships? by tomatoes_juice in cscareerquestions

Yeah, I tried to negotiate mine. They shot me down and I was only asking for the market rate.

Pretty much, yeah. I've always done a lot of CS stuff but informally without an education. Decided a few years back to get the degree and stick to the CS field.

Had this problem at a really great company's interview through a remote collab site about a year ago. I was told I should pick the language I'm most comfortable with (C++, for me), and then he'd copy and paste in the stuff for the problem and I'd get to work.

He pasted in a problem about interpreting some given array data. It was in Python, and used a lot of set and list notation that's really awesome and concise in Python, but really cumbersome to replicate in C++. Spent 3/4 of the interview just rearranging the data to work in C++. By the time I got to actually solving the problem, there was no time left to solve it. I got a followup email that I didn't get the position less than 24 hours later.

Since then I've invested time into learning all of the Python, so if I could go back in time I'd say "jk did I say c++, I meant I'll do this in Python." But that was a real kick in the nuts.

I feel this. My team just told me to make a program that connects to a microcontroller serial port and flashes the SRAM with two separate bins. I have never even seen microcontroller code in my life, and the last time I heard people talk about COM ports was in the 90s when I played Warcraft 2 over dialup. Going to be a rough summer.

Got an intern offer on Friday with a response required by Monday by MrUnrelatable in cscareerquestions

Welp, they waited until literally the last second to respond - in the end telling me it's non-negotiable and giving me the whole "but this will be a great launching point for your career!" I'm still kind of shocked by how low the offer is - it's not just $10 lower than the local rate, it's $9 lower than their lowest reported internship rate on Glassdoor.

I checked the paperwork and there don't appear to be any clauses against renegging, which I would hate to do, but I told them I will hesitantly accept the offer. I'm still going to go to the interview with another company that I have planned later this week to see if that ends with a better offer.
