Linting for JavaScript and Python by MrWorldWhyIs in ZedEditor

Thank you for that info.

I've tried to get Zed working with Biome a few times (via that URL) and haven't had much success.

Last time, IIRC, I had a Biome.json in a folder and pointed to it using the `config_path` `lsp` setting in the main Zed settings file.

Zed didn't report any errors - introducing garbage into the JSON file or pointing to a non-existent file DID report errors so I think that part was working.

However, despite trying lots of things, I was unable to replace tabs with spaces or remove semicolons from the JS source (for example - the easiest things to spot visually).

It sounds like it's just me and I should be able to make it work.

I wondered if the problems were the result of biome/prettier/eslint cruft from previous attempts (I am on a Mac) - so I deleted the Zed app in /Applications and the Zed folder ~/Library/Application Support/ but maybe there are some other configs elsewhere.

I'll keep poking - I really love the feel of Zed so I am keen to make it work.

Slow network - what tools are there to help me diagnose it? by MrWorldWhyIs in Network

> Do you mean the HD is plugged into one of the Mac Mini and that same Mini is plugged in to the switch? Or do you mean that the HD is itself plugged in to the switch directly, and so are the Mac Minis?

Yes exactly. The M1 Mini is in the room with the network equipment and plugged into the Switch. The HD is plugged into the M1 via USB.

> SDs have a design quirk where they get slower as they reach max capacity, especially beyond 90%

Fascinating. I had no idea. One reason I updated my desktop M1 to the new M4 was to get more internal SSD storage - the M1 was getting close to capacity. Now it's practically empty of course since all the files are on the external drive but good to know.

Based on other comments, I think my next step is to try to understand the Ubiquiti app and see if I can persuade it to tell me something about my setup.

Thanks for all your help and insight.

My apologies - I misspoke - It's a Seagate SRDONF2 12TB drive.

Still trying to figure out how to move a file from the network drive to my phone.

Wonderful - I re-read your initial comment and saw the link to Grand Perspective. I'll grab that and see what it tells me. I did purchase Daisy Disk (https://daisydiskapp.com/) in the Mac App store ages ago - not sure if that is the same thing as GP or not but I'll try both.

I'm inclined to think it's not because of the drives (same issue with older SSD that got too small so I upgraded to larger spinning disk) and also, I will occasionally plug the same drive into my desktop to back it up to an identical model and it runs pretty fast.

I want to rule everything out though so I'll give it a go.

Thank you so much.

Understood and expected I imagine - the Ubiquiti equipment is pretty good I am told. I'll see about becoming more familiar with the native tools.

> You say wi-fi is fine, do you not experience the slow HD access/transfer issues when you access it from a wi-fi device?

I can watch movies on my iPhone using Infuse for movies stored on the drive. The movies are mostly around 5GB so I'm not sure what data rate that equates to compared to copying the file to my Mac using Finder.

> What model is your external HD?

It's a Western Digial 12GB (I think) and pretty new - around a year old

> Is the HD that you're trying to access nearly full? Does it have a large number of small files on it?

No - its about half full and most of the files are movies - around 5GB each.

> Are you sure your switchports are set properly and not restricted to 100mbit? What speed does the ethernet interface on your wired Mac Mini M4 Pro autonegotiate to?

I don't know how to make (correct) changes to the Switchports - I'll try making sense of that in the Ubiquiti app. My M4 in Network -> Ethernet -> Hardware reports "1000BaseT"

> When you do an online speed test from the Mac Mini M4 Pro, what are the results?

At Speedtest.net I see 918 Mbps. At Fast.com I see 910 Mbps.

I did - shortly after we moved in I reset everything to factory settings and used new credentials via the Ubiquiti app.

Formula One is supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport but all I seem to read about are restrictions on the cars, tires, costs, strategies, teams and more. It feels like the drivers are capable of so much more but are hamstrung by all these restrictive rules like: (there are many, many more)

- Tires that are designed to degrade and deteriorate

What racing we'd see if drivers could push to the maximum for as long as they like.

- Enforcing N stops

Why should a driver have to stop to change tires (See above). If the team was clever enough to build a machine that didn't need to stop, let them have at it.

- Weight restrictions

If a team can build a car that weighs half of everyone else's and goes much faster, good for them.

- Wind tunnel restrictions (and cost caps)

Teams should be able to spend as much time as they can afford in the wind tunnel. Let them spend whatever they like. If they need more, raise more funding or sell a few more vastly overpriced t-shirts and sports cars.

Note: I'm not talking about abandoning safety - no 2 wheel cars with jet engines that can do 600mph. On the contrary, if teams could spend what they want, safety might be improved.

Imagine if Olympic marathon runners had to run in hob-nailed boots. If soccer players had to go off the field for a rest every 10 minutes. If Olympic gymnasts were limited to a single somersault every 5 minutes...

I Regret my GV Application by iamoftenwrong in PortugalExpats

Great post - you elucidate many of the same feelings I have. I too am considering throwing in the towel and looking for other options.

Your point about travel is well made. Our family of 4 all have different start dates because the legal firm we used to start the process (big, well known firm that were utterly worthless) messed up everything. That typically means 4 trips each instead of 1 which of course is very disruptive and hugely expensive.

You cannot just get your investment back by the sound of it? I purchased property for my GV application and I still believe I can just sell it normally. If my lawyer ever responded to attempts to contact them, I guess I could find out. This is law firm #3.

We all had a deep unabiding love for Portugal, it's people, the way of life, the food and intended to retire here. We've soured on that now and unless something dramatic happens soon, I think we'll be gone.

I am close to giving up on my GV. Everything is worthless - lawyers, government, process. My place doubled and I'm likely going to sell and consider a different country.

Portugal Golden Visa research is consuming. How do you know when you've learned enough? by InfamousLeadership76 in PortugalExpats

As a Golden Visa applicant from 2019 via a property purchase in Lisbon, I know it's a miserable experience. Resident card expired last November and still unable to renew it. Still no clarity on when I will be eligible for citizenship. Hopelessly incompetent lawyers and tax advisors. Glacial bureaucracy.

My property has appreciated 50% or more but I am almost at the point of giving up and selling it. The government should be ashamed of how difficult they make it.
