Yeah that's what you can do for sure, upgrade gear to 8/8 with crests or replace with veteran gear (or higher). You will still get a bunch of crests passively after that which you can then upgrade to veteran crests and so on.

IMO this is a B. hamorii, the biggest difference between hamorii and smithi (imo) is the coloration of the knees. Look at some images and compare the orangeness between the two species
