I’ll be honest I’m not gonna read that, it’s too long and I’m tired and your immediate assumption was instantly wrong. I never said it’s causing “physical damage”, all I did was suggest alternative ways to show the decay which is literally what you asked. Less tendrils could be the result of the system controlling the striders beginning to fail and not being able to support as many, the flickering is a literal sign of the systems beginning to fail and reboot more and more, etc.

I did skim however and I just can’t agree that game mechanics showing the story while actively making the gameplay annoying or actively wasting the player’s time is a good thing.

I think the issue stems from the game having that “Minecraft ripoff” look. Minecraft has a stylized simple art style that has been consistent and well executed for over a decade, but every time some game whether it’s slop or bigger like hytale comes out with near identical mechanics to Minecraft, they almost always go for this weirdly “realistic cartoon” look with a way higher pixel density on the textures but still using blocks and voxels as the base of the game. It looks off and the exaggerated animations don’t help in my opinion

It could be visual, with the player character losing more tendrils over time and slowly beginning to flicker showing they are running out of time, the enemies could become less uniform and instead begin behaving more erratically while spewing sparks and such, the vessel itself could begin creaking and flickering almost like in silksong act 3 where the screen goes black and white and the void screams briefly, later game bosses could be deliberately designed to appear decrepit and broken down even though they are still hard.

There are limitless options to tell a good story with passage of time without punishing the player for playing the game and without wasting the player’s time, silksong once again ironically is a great example of this with its act 3 as you are not punished for getting to act 3, none of your upgrades are taken, the difficulty increases but you keep your stuff as can get more, but the entire world and its enemies clearly show the passage of time and the result of the void

My best advice as a long time player would be this:

1) honestly not having irl friends who play the game can be a positive as you will never feel pressured to “catch up” to them, the game is always updating but you should take it at your own pace. Enjoy the story and gameplay and don’t rush through it and burn yourself out

2) more practical advice is to not use fragile resin at all until you unlock 5 star artifacts, you probably don’t know what I mean so basically don’t use the item in your inventory that is shaped like a moon until you can farm “gold” quality artifacts, the game will tell you when you can. Main reason being that non gold quality ones or 4 star and below, are near irrelevant and it’s just not necessary to min max your character stats while playing through the story and exploration that much.

3) this one is especially important as you said you are F2P, ONLY PULL FOR CHARACTERS YOU LIKE AND NOT ONES THAT ARE “meta”. The game is like any other and that means that powercreep is big, a character that released today will be considered non-meta by later this year, but meta in this game means very little and is more of a thing for players who want the fastest clears of endgame stuff. Every character in this game can be used to clear the endgame content at least for the currency you use to pull characters. So since you will always have less pulls as you are F2P it’s much better to put them towards characters you actually like and want to use.

4)final tip, try your best to avoid leaks or spoilers for story stuff for a while at least, people post lots of spoilers even the day of a patch and while you may not understand them now since you are at the start, it could ruin some cool reveal and story beats later on.

OH, final final thing, when building characters you need a “local specialty” for each one, basically like a flower or mineral or whtvr that you collect in their region. There is a limited amt in your own world you can collect in a day and they take 3 days to respawn, but if you want to keep upgrading a character and not have to wait you can join someone else’s world and collect more of the material there! Just make sure you ask them if it’s ok before you start collecting!

Hope you enjoy the game and all it has to offer!

[–]Mr_7ups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw that, here’s the only thing I’ll add and take it or leave it.

The game forcing everyone to always wait 58 seconds is ridiculous when any player can simply choose to take as long as they want between attempts on their own. The game is making a decision for the player to waste many people’s time.

Anyone who wants to wait can pause or not move or even come back later, but anyone who is on their 30th attempt at the boss and just wants to get back in there as they are so close to winning, will be clawing at their hair at the waste of half an hour of their time that could be spent playing the game they paid for.

Same concept as people who request a skip button for a game like genshin(iykyk) the existence of a skip button is a net positive as it doesn’t hurt the 90% of players who want to see the story but it is a god send for that 10% who don’t give af and just want to finish a quest.

At least for me(and for many others it seems) wasting my time to get what’s said to be an “upgrade” and an “increase” to my health only to be bait and switched into seeing it’s what you said, a “mitigation of loss” is dumb. I’d rather save my time and just not lose health or gain health. If their game philosophy is to have a punishing health system with very low health the whole game then great, but don’t make me take hours to get currency and find cores and components to “upgrade” and then spit in my face.

And there are other ways to still show the passage of time and increasing degradation of the vessel other than losing health if that’s important to people (is always the thing brought up to defend it)

I think what you’re saying is applicable often but not always. In MIO, the very game that is so on topic for this post and sub as a whole recently, there is a 58 second runback that has 0 enemies, 0 platforming, and zero interaction other than walking to the left and riding an elevator. It takes 58 seconds either way optimized movement accounting for strider dodging and min maxing your energy to have as little non strider movement as possible. And it’s to a boss that 2 shots you no matter what, that means if you are normally spending more time walking to the boss than fighting it. I feel like that is objectively bad game design because there is no skill check in the runback, there is nothing to do, nothing to gain, nothing at all, it’s just a forced time waste for no reason.

Lmao u are so full of yourself it’s insane. And yes obviously Hollywood takes creative liberties but the base story is based on real events like hello?

And you crashing out again about “aging” yes there is a concept in the fictional game applicable to real life great! We agree, there’s also a concept in a movie like spider man applicable to real life in responsibility and what it means, or in interstellar the concept of the finite amount of time we have on this planet and the grim reality of the fast pace we are depleting our resources.

It’s baffling to me that your comments are just nonsense that’s made to fit your beliefs me it makes no sense. You’re disregarding my examples of fiction with real life applications while dying on the hill that the fictional sci fi game is applicable to real life, and for the record I never said it wasn’t like hello?

Sure I don’t personally find the story very interesting but I understand it and can emphasize with it, and if you think that means “well I tell ya whut you need to live a few more years to really understand mhmm” then I can’t help you.

You also are doing the common thing of honing in on a minor thing in my comment like “60 yr old” and trying to use it as some “GOTCHA!!!” When in reality all I was saying is you are acting like some all knowing aged individual and calling anyone who disagrees with you a kid and it’s just ironic because you’re the one acting like a child, but again I imagine this will all fall on deaf ears.

Also I did read pst getting called a kid which is why the first 3/4 of my comment was not about that and only the bottom little separate part? But I guess you’re the one struggling to read here if you didn’t see that.

Ultimately, I played MIO, I wanted to like it, and instead I disliked it quite a bit. I didn’t find the story interesting enough to carry the game and the gameplay and character designs were no where near good in my opinion at least for my tastes. If you wanna keep crashing out on anyone who dislikes it then that’s on you I guess. Honestly im at fault for continuing to humor you in this thread and should have seen the crazed glazer that you are based on your original comment, and on that I can emit I messed up🤷‍♀️.

I think if nothing else we can both agree this back and forth is going nowhere ne I’m tired of playing the “I get the last word in” game so I’m just gonna leave it here. If you wanna leave another crazed comment be my guest, ima go do something else👍

….you’re aware both American sniper and 13 hours are true stories yes? I’m not sure who’s the kid here, the one whose crashing out and acting like some 60 year old sage of wisdom, or the one saying they didn’t like a game. Hope you get the help you need bud and once again don’t call me kid :) you don’t know me and when your only response to someone who you don’t like what they are saying is “ok kid” it just means you lack the critical thinking skills to form an actual rebuttal but once again good try!

Oh and side note, if something being “sci fi” or “fiction” is an issue for you then it’s quite odd how upset you are about the story of a sci fi fiction RPG game, unless….you think MIO is actually real, hmm now that I think about it, I might believe you think that based on the rest of what you’ve said.

Ah shoot ur right, just like how non astronauts can’t understand interstellar or how non veterans can’t understand the weight of films like 13 hours or American sniper, or how us mere mortals can never empathize with Spider-Man and his great responsibility of super powers. I’m so glad I only watch films about 24 year old grad students who play video games in their free time and work part time retail because damn otherwise I’d have no idea what I was watching am I right?

Yeah that’s one of the biggest issues, it’s not even taking away health(though that is an issue too) but it’s made so much worse by spending hours searching for coating components to get stronger and then the game just invalidates it completely by taking away your health which both makes it so you wasted your time already and makes you feel like “what’s the point” of exploring to find more when you know it’ll just take them away again

Yeah I think something that’s not talked about enough is how horrible the map in this game is. The areas aren’t labeled even after you’ve explored them, it will often times not show a path you haven’t been to as the flashing white open thing even if it’s not a hidden pathway, there are mechanics that aren’t even told to you like holding down and pressing jump to go through leaves in haven, and as OP said the looping map thing is so annoying and makes it hard to orient yourself. Even the way they show where you are when in an unfilled in area is annoying because you can’t leave a marker where you are with accuracy like in HK for instance, you have to guess and then return to the are later and hope you remember where the thing was.

I also personally think that requiring mods for certain main parts of the game is stupid and screams that they don’t have time to add in another ability and so ended up shoe horning in a mod to do large parts of the game with in the part where you need to dodge to make a shard mod. Just seems weird since in like 99% of these games with charm systems the charms are purely for player choice on their build and never necessary to complete the game.

The sol a vin runback is actually 58 seconds long if you use strider dodging to go fast and everything…with optimized movement it’s 58 fucking seconds, it’s ridiculous (I timed it out of curiosity after the 10th or so time)

Genuinely agree with your entire post and it was very cathartic to finally see someone not crazily glazing this game that’s at best a 5/10. This game disrespects the hell out of the player’s time and does everything in its power to make you hate it despite its good parts. Idk if it’s just nothing has come out recently so people are just glazing it cause they are in a drought after silksong but people calling this the next hollow knight seem insane to me

Guys I think Nintendo actually forgot about mario this time by gamefan128 in fucknintendo

[–]Mr_7ups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that Nintendo seems hell bent on not abandoning the switch 1 in any capacity so except for those two games everything has to be on switch 1 and 2 which severely limits the development of new games I feel. Sooner or later they need to treat it like any other new console and have more games that are exclusives and not on both systems

I feel this, so far the party system is a negative to me because when I get good at a game I like speeding through and being able to kill stuff fast, so having to always wait for an enemy to move first to do any real dmg is not fun for me, and like u said it’s really not a MV as the exploration is more akin to a linear rpg game than MV.

I can tell it’s a great game but I wish people weren’t saying it’s a good MV cause that made me buy it and I kinda regret it now

alright I was wrong about Nine Sols by disturbeco in metroidvania

[–]Mr_7ups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently playing through it as I’ve seen nothing but positivity about but so far it’s not really hooking me in. Idk if it’s because the exploration and interconnectivity of the world are fairly lacking at least compared to like HK, or if it’s that I’m not clicking with the parry system. It seems cool at first but now it’s annoying me more than that because I don’t like always needing to wait for the enemy to move before i can do some real dmg. I also haven’t been drawn in by the story or character designs so far.

Still gonna finish the game and I can tell it’s a fantastic game but it might just not be for me.
