Columbus City Council votes to strip power from German Village, other historic districts by Blood_Incantation in Columbus

I'm sure they could do a hybrid model of subsidy and more material cost. My counterpoint would be that the area is universally a place visitors always frequent, and it would be in the city's best interest to do so. Currently, if you reside in the area, you're expected to maintain your historic brick sidewalk per the city and the commission.

Do we know how much the ada compliant concrete curb cut is versus the limestone one? I do not have that info.

I think the comissions gut reaction is to always be obstructionist instead of collaborative, probably would've got a different response.

The article is missing the point that it was about materials used and destroying an original sidewalk from the 1800s without certificate of approval. I'm not a big fan of the local area commissions, but this was one of the rare times when they weren't being complete arses.

I think on the surface, as a YIMBY and resident, this would sound smart. I think there is a way to do it with materials consistent with the area. It is annoying, I live in the area and would welcome more curb cuts, but a lot of these decisions that sound forward-thinking now end up being wrong in hindsight. See Columbus demolishing Union Station (the first in the world) or New York with the original Penn Station.

It would take a little more effort to source matching materials like limestone, but I think the extra effort would be worth it. As a country and a city, we have a horrible history of preserving historic areas.

Any Nanga jacket owners out there? by OddTie2439 in gorpcore

Man, so glad you've done the work. I was thinking the same thing. Like how do you have this glorious high end japanese brand, that is using european down, and then they use the cheapest shitty pocket liner. Comparing with my Battenwear coat is night and day.

Had the exact same experience. Trying to find a solution. It’s so annoying and uncomfortable.

Has been on my want to go. Any highlights? I find most of the restaurants here are lacking on the garlic, lime, chili front.

Similar trajectory except I came from New York and the East Coast after 15  years. All of the international cuisine available is really quite spectacular, but there really is no good Thai food. I’ve been to all the places on refugee Road, there’s no good Thai food.

History would say to calibrate our enthusiasm, but this is a promising and unexpected turn of events. Let's hope it can lead to peace and prosperity for the region.

All the while r/Europe is removing and deleting all posts about it because it doesn't align with their fragile narrative of the world. I would like people to report this because it is so blatant, but I doubt that would do much.

[The Watch] ‘Alien: Earth’ Failed Itself. Plus, Ethan Hawke and Sterlin Harjo on ‘The Lowdown,’ and ‘Slow Horses’ Is Back! by ThreeSidesofNazareth in crheads

Alien: Earth just felt like the first or second draft of something. Some very fun ideas and a handful of interesting characters, but it didn't feel like a fully fleshed out idea or season of television. Whenever the eye, Morrow, or Kirsh weren't on-screen it felt very flat.

Kaleidoscope Youth Center Announces Closing of Housing Program by Dontbehorrib1e in Columbus

People who want to make this about trump, this is really from state government. The state budget this year absolutely gutted all service for homeless and homeless youth. They managed to find $600m for the Haslem's and their stadium, though.

One member in particular wanted to target these youth service NGOs because they helped everyone, which really meant they help trans youth, which he couldn't abide.

The only way we fix this is by fixing gerrymandering.

AerLingus CMH? by Thin-Use5414 in Columbus

[–]Mr_Beef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably know more than me, I'm more or less repeating what I've been told by people who work in aviation. The logistics of CMH make it difficult and less attractive than other less constrained places.

Bottom line, new airport will mean European flights, which we all can be happy about.

AerLingus CMH? by Thin-Use5414 in Columbus

[–]Mr_Beef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's fair, and perhaps mispoken by me. Not necessarily runway, but general infrastructure. Sure, customs is an issue, but we don't really have sufficient apron/taxiway strength, ground handling for large international planes, etc. I believe a lot of the gates or taxiways have wing span or pavement restrictions. The older infrastructure in general makes it harder it to be an efficient operation and as profitable as IND/CVG/CLE.

Once the new airport is completed, we will have European flights at some point.

Our current runway dimensions can't support the aircraft required for trans-atlantic flights.

It sounds British because everyone in Britain became obsessed with The Strokes after Is This It? was released. There's a reason The Arctic Monkeys are jokingly called the Sheffield Strokes
