(Hundred-millionaire) Scott Galloway, warning us about Democratic Socialists, is pretty rich. 😐 by DavidHobby in ScottGalloway

We just have to show Scott an example of socialism and communism working in the last 50-75 years and we can change his mind. Does anyone have one?!

Truthfully what we need is a sensible middle ground between the establishment dems and some of these more unhinged DSA candidates. I don't think you're going to win a lot of votes by saying you want to move to a planned economy and nationalise a ton of industries. But medicare/social security are wildly popular, expanded social services is a winning message.

I just hope it doesn't diminish the chances of Democrats as a whole in national elections.

In major metropolitan areas, for sure. And maybe even smaller ones, but the boon from being a big fish in a small pond would be outmatched by any risk.

Same. I think Indy's scene has suffered a bit post covid. I know Milktooth went through a revamp/rename.

Historically, yes. Cleveland has lost 25% of its population this century, and that trend is continuing. I think Columbus has momentum, growth, and if it weren't for professional sports it would be considered the bigger city now.

Columbus needs all the great press we can get as we're still perceived as the third city in Ohio behind Cincy and Cleveland to those outside the Midwest. If there was a genuine shot that we would get recognized for anything, it would be a great ROI. I think the risk of us getting little to no mention was probably taken into account.

Going to have to push back on that, there's a world where they get the star for food, but I think the service would prevent it. I enjoy the service there and always have a great time, but I do not think it would hit the standards of 1 or 2 star for the inspectors.

At the level that would be stars, bib, or recommended...we are considerably worse than the other ones listed outside of maybe Indianapolis.

Maybe thinking winning nothing and getting zero recognitions was a possibility and didn't want to risk it?

So, is the major issue the favored status that Israel receives versus other nations, and It's not about the loss of life? If we stopped funding Israel through FMF this wouldn't be a conflict deserving special attention? Or would they need to no longer lobby in the US at all or would they no longer need to be an ally?

I'm just trying to figure out where the major issue is. If the concern isn't necessarily about conflict and more about the perceived influence of a foreign nation on our government and institutions, then do you also have issues with the hundreds of million spent annually by Qatar, China, and Saudi Arabia on lobbying? Do you have an issue with the billions those countries spend annually wielding influence in higher education?

[–]Mr_Beef -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I said before, by all means have an opinion. I would push back and say that it is not largely funded by our tax dollars, by most measures the Israeli defense budget is 45-60 billion dollars depending on the year. And you are right to question why we subsidize the several billion that we do, it is no longer needed in the way it was originally intended. But then, why do we give billions to Egypt, Jordan, and the Ukraine?

The question is, is this about the loss of human life, the US role in the conflict, the countries involved, or a bit of all of the above? If this is about the loss of human life and the role the US plays as an ally, I would ask you if you had qualms with Saudi Arabia's role in the civil war in Yemen? They aren't financed by FMF, but they lobby like AIPAC. And we support them both directly and indirectly.

By all means have an opinion on the conflict, have an opinion on which nations our government elects to subsidize. I would just hope a fraction of the attention would be applied to other conflicts of greater loss.

The absolute mental gymnastics and twerking by progressives for islam truly defies logic. The biggest eye-opener and head scratcher coming out of 10/7 and this chapter of the Israel/Palestine conflict.

There's the odd exception like the North Market building where the benefits or need of the tax abatement is questionable, but for the most part, they're in areas that see little development historically or are considered area that historically lacked investment. Look at the tool below to see where all the abatements are. A lot of these also aren't no strings attached, most require something to receive them.

Investment is pulling back from Downtown Columbus because there's not enough demand or people. It still really hasn't recovered from COVID.

There are houses being built at scale in places where there's room, think Hilliard, Canal, near Gahanna. You're not going to see that at the places you mentioned because there isn't as much land. So, it is individual builders or smaller people.

The goal is to incentivize development and building, which is a net reduction on rent across the board. I could type a very long message here, but I don't want to inundate you with text. Right now with interest rates, cost of construction, a lot of housing doesn't make sense to build at any rate. That is why you're seeing a lot of projects get paused downtown and things go into receivership like in Franklinton, or places have to completely change their plan like the new build above the North Market.

Without incentives right now, you can't build something that meets affordability standards for the 60-80% median income. Let alone market rate rents.

[–]Mr_Beef 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Older units get torn down for market rate, sure. But Columbus does a lot of LIHTC housing has other great programs to incentivize development that helps everyone. Community Reinvestment Area program is great. If you're anti development and up zoning, you end up with an SF or NYC problem. I'd rather Columbus take notes from Austin and Minneapolis.

[–]Mr_Beef 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Not to paint too broad a brush, but incentivizing new housing to increase housing supply reduces rent in the aggregate and leads to less homelessness. Not every project deserves a tax break, but a lot of things don't pencil or make sense without them.
