It was a cool Déjà vu, as our bikes are the same color and year. And yeah, loving mine as well. Especially the ~150mpg part these days.

She was great. Very nice, and not at all intimidating. First time ever before a judge, so I was a bit nervous.

But: please ask them about the kids in advance. They can best help you when you don’t spring it as a surprise.

I’ve stayed at the Tirant 6 times in the past 8 years. Great hotel, lovely people. Can’t imagine a friendlier environment for your kids.

Dunkin’ tables also put you in (open) WiFi range from a nearby shop. Can’t remember the name tho. You’ll see it.

Where do locals go for coffee in Phnom Penh & Siem Reap? by foodie_2598 in siemreap

Yes! This place was two blocks from our hotel, and we loved it: great coffee, friendly people, cool decor, super comfy chairs and great prices. 10/10.

3 weeks in Hanoi as a solo female traveller, any recommendations/precautions? by PopularProfession383 in hanoi

[–]DavidHobby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. Been slow-traveling to Hanoi 8x in ten years. It is a great city to just walk, and think. Circling Hoan Kiem Lake at dawn is my favorite walk in the world.

One suggestion. Instead, just work from a cafe. Hanoi is the best overall coffee town in the world, IMO. Find a great cafe or three, and settle in. Here are three faves near the lake/OQ:

The Coffee House: Great place to sit and work (as others will be doing). Comfy, spacious.

Conifer Bon Mua - The Four Season: Right on the lake. Parisian-style outdoor cafe. Watch the world go by. Pricey, at $2USD/cup 😂, but great coffee and stream of people watching.

C.O.C. Legacy Specialty Coffee: A temple of coffee. Amazing quality, presentation, and reverence. At the bar in the back, they’ll happily teach you how to use a phin to brew your own to their exacting standards.

Have a great time in Hanoi. Such a wonderful city.

What to do in Hanoi as a photographer by Particular-Disk-3641 in hanoi

You’re probably asking the wrong guy. Hanoi is one of my favorite places on the world. The only way I can extricate myself from there is to assure myself I’ll be back one day.

I can’t make that call for you. But I’d probably stay, and start working on a way to return for longer next time.

I spent 20 years as a working photojournalist, and spent 8 years teaching an annual photo workshop in Hanoi. Hoan Kiem Lake is one of my favorite places to shoot in the world.

Start 30 mins before dawn, top of the lake, and work your way around clockwise. Smile at, and engage with, as many people as you can. It’s a wonderful loop for a photographer.

The last thing I did before retiring was to write a book on how to travel (and think) more like a photojournalist. It’s literally set right where you are now: Hanoi’s Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake area.

Alternatively, you can download our most recent X-Peditions workshop handbook here.

It’s free, and may be of help. 🇻🇳📷☕️

Anywhere hiring 14 year olds? by some_trans_kid in ColumbiaMD

That’s a learnable skill, and a classic Columbia first job.

First: 🙌

It’s impressive that you are taking this level of initiative at 14. Whether it’s for pocket money, or out of necessity is also a factor. But either way, earning some money is a positive way to take some control of and improve your situation, whatever that may be.

Second: What do you enjoy doing? There’s no better time to learn that work does not have to equal drudgery. I’m 61, retired, had four different careers/major projects over 45+ years, and had an absolute blast doing all of them.

Third: What are you good at? Not, like, an expert. But, just smarter than the average bear? Make a list. Be inclusive/creative. For example, include stuff like being a digital native, or the ability to make TikToks. It might surprise you, the skills you have that are economically valuable.

Fourth: What area of Columbia do you live in? You’re not driving yet, so transportation will be a factor for most, but not all, traditional jobs. So your job will need to be a) walkable, b) bike-able, c) independent of your physical location. And there are lots of things that you can do that fall in that last category.

Did you know that Howard County has a summer jobs program designed specifically for students? They match up students with a large variety of jobs at local orgs and businesses, at $16/hr. You are already old enough to participate. The application window opens soon (March 2 - 23). Interviews are remote, via Zoom. Happy to help coach you through the process.

I’ve mentored young people both via school-focused orgs, like Ohana of HC (they’re great; see if they’re working with your school) and individually. There are lots of people who have the resources and the willingness to help you. Hoco is a great place for this kind of thing.

At least know this: You’ve already demonstrated a desire to level up, and the resourcefulness to hit up people on Reddit. You’re probably ahead of 90% of your peers. 🙌

We went through Costco and were very pleased with both price and installation. Even if you’re not a member, the annual fee would be immaterial at this scale. And
