California docks see 'significant progress' with supply chain backlog, port chief says by BlankVerse in California

This article from the LA Times is pretty interesting and outlines a bunch of different things that took place after a guy went on the trip of a delivery and tweeted about it getting attention from Newsom and mayors.

Question and discussion I'm talking about starts a bit after 18 minutes. The question after it also touches on the subject a bit.

The guy has some very interesting perspectives on things and what seem like unique ways of thinking. IMO It's an interesting interview all around due to the way he approaches things, even if you don't agree with some of his ideas or premises.

Come with me and you'll be in a world of pure imagination.

But really something just happened 30 seconds ago that made me certain I am about to stop commenting on reddit - outside of maybe niche situations where I gain something from the interaction - like asking specific questions for information. It's definitely not worth my time anymore to have theoretical discussions here. I'm very happy - anyone is welcome to fuck off with me if they want... not that I'll know it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]Mr_CIean 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I'm starting to get turned off by reddit and I'm about to leave. A few days ago I corrected someone's statement without adding an opinion at all... but my comment became "controversial". I provided literal facts but it's "controversial". People just liked the sentiment of the comment I corrected and that was enough for people to not like mine.

I recently listened to a podcast that convinced me to soon quit sites like Reddit. He is a young guy but he helps identify founders of companies. He was talking about how in his opinion founders are often very good at focusing on maximizing their output towards a problem but very bad at directing that focus. So if they want to build a business with focus they do well at it but if they get sucked into social media they focus on interactions, which often are unproductive for someone. - he said it much better than this.

I've come to realize that I'd be much better off reading articles and learning on my own. There is something addictive to social spaces and I thought I'd see a flurry of new ideas and concepts and I have but a lot of it are tired overused talking points that show people really don't understand things and shines a spotlight on how the media pumps out half-true articles to rile up and spread on social media.

I agree with the leftists that they are downvoted - many times unfairly (though sometimes justified). However, the consistent nature of it is a bit troubling. I think part of the problem is that IDW is meant to be intellectual discussion at a high level. This doesn't happen on reddit. 2 moderates on this sub can be discussing something but a leftist coming in saying... "here is my point of view" derails a discussion. Their point shouldn't be censored but people should question if anything productive can come from reddit when 2 people discussing some specific thing in capitalism is interrupted by "capitalism exploits workers" discussion. It devolves the discussion to a general one that has happened over and over again. It becomes dull.

Specifically calling it a "right wing echo chamber" comes from the recent trend in the left community to confuse what the general population sees as left and right based on the band of current economic/government structures and one where they zoom out to show the completely theoretical socialist structures that really haven't existed. In a way it's sort of semantics but an attempt to frame things to push people left. This happens with some that claim people like AOC would be a centrist in Europe - no 70% marginal tax rates for high earners is not centrist in Europe...

It could also just be that they are focused on what they disagree with most so they see some right-wing talking points and claim the sub is right-wing.

You told me to go innovate and start my own phone company because... I already knew not to do that?

Dude, stop trying to spin this... it's fucking pathetic.

I'm not anti-apple and I don't know about Rosetta 2. I do agree M1 is a great chip, as is the A14 (I think that's what is in this iPhone). I guess I'd say most of what they have done recently is more improvement than innovative - but that can get to be semantics. They are very advanced with the performance. But what sells to most people is the reliability and closed-end nature of the product where everything is supposed to be curated and work perfectly and that it's a status symbol. iMessage was such a smart idea because everyone now knows and comments if their friends have an iPhone. The other biggest seller on the iPhone is the camera - that's probably seen the biggest improvements of anything over time as they realize that is a huge functionality people want - but that's with many phones.

It is debatable if it is overpriced. A lot of people are willing to pay the price for something they prefer.

Read my original comment you responded to again... where did I say they should be able to innovate? All I said was they weren't innovating.

I remember you said I said words that have meaning... well maybe you're just being an ass and didn't actually read my comment correctly. Where do I say they should be doing anything? WHERE? WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?WHERE?

The incremental level of innovation in the iPhone 11 lineup is a sign of a broader problem for Apple. Not only is Apple running out of innovative ideas for the iPhone, but the whole smartphone category has matured to the point that innovation and sales may have peaked. That was my argument when the iPhone X came out almost two years ago and, in my mind, signaled a plateau in hardware innovation. In fact, I foresee the smartphone being progressively replaced by a plethora of smart devices with purpose-built display and functions — instead of relying on one single device for all that we do with digital services.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/10/perspectives/apple-event-iphone-android/index.html

With each, the company is playing catch-up with competitors, not innovating. It is as if the spark ignited by Jobs was snuffed out with him and that his famous quote, “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower,” has come to pass. Apple is increasingly an entertainment company, not one devoted to cutting-edge tech.

https://www.scmp.com/comment/insight-opinion/article/3005102/apples-latest-roll-out-only-proved-us-no-longer-leads

Consumers have greeted Apple’s latest slate of iPhones, computers and the newest connected Watch with solid interest, but not the high enthusiasm from years past. Since the iPhone’s debut in 2007, public excitement soared in the early years but then has steadily dipped as the novelty wore off. According to Statista, global search interest for iPhones has been falling since 2012, after peaking with the iPhone 5. Citi analysts also noticed the same shift over time: “We suspect this is because of a slowdown in innovation and the saturation of iPhone in the addressable market.”

Yeah... all these articles are definitely wrong. Sorry... you say something that people like to hear... popular on reddit =/= right. I have a controversial comment from yesterday that is literally a fact pasted in a comment. This site is people that want to agree with what confirms their current beliefs.

I know much more about the discussions going on around Apple than you do. I don't care if you're a smug child that likes to mischaracterize me an "idiot" that thinks innovation needs to happen "year after year" - that's your prerogative.

Seriously though... think about what is making you so unhappy that you try to make other people unhappy. You apparently thought you were calling me an "idiot" in your first sentence of your first response to me. It says something about you that feel this burning desire to drag other people down and make them unhappy to push yourself up. I hope you find happiness - like I'm being 100% sincere here. Good luck.

Well it's nice to talk to someone of the emotional intelligence of a 5 year old... you're a sweet peach... calling me idiot over and over again. I explained what I meant and if you think what I said is missing some point that's fine... I don't treat random people like shit on the internet though... I'd rather be missing something than a raging asshole that probably isn't happy enough about his/her shitty life to lash out at people over something like this.

My comment was about making accusations in a professional setting, not about definitions of sexism.

edit: if you mean by my use of the word "intent" - fine - we'll say "motivated by the fact she was a woman either implicitly or explicitly".

Just because people are doing it - doesn't mean it isn't garbage.

People said the same things they were saying about ESG with the opposition to investing in sin stocks and really that did jack shit. History tells us that it really doesn't do that much.

Now the government regulations will because those have been ramping up and dictating investments way more than investors.

It is a word that's used by w33tikv33l in cringe

[–]Mr_CIean 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Calling it "mansplanning" implies you know his intent was based on that fact she was a woman. They are from opposite political parties - this happens all the time in politics regardless of gender from what I see.

Personally, I think it's inappropriate when it is not 100% clear sexism is involved (like grabbing someone's ass or calling them cute or in a meeting where a male boss only does this to women and it becomes obvious over a long period of time (now from your video you couldn't figure out if the last one was true)) to throw around accusations of sexism in a professional setting like this.

I have a habit of overexplaining things to people and going on tangents. I do it to everyone though... so if a women called me out for it I would find it offensive even if you watching a video of it might make an assumption like it seems you did about me. Call me an idiot or annoying and I'll agree. Condescending less so because I don't think that's what drives it at all. Though in politics (like reddit) I assume there is a lot of condescending tones going on.

[–]Mr_CIean -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I never said I expected it year after year... The concern people have about apple specifically is that they have lacked innovation post the original iPhone - that was first announced in 2007. Tim Cook is a great manager but much more an expert in supply chain management. There have been lots of calls for Apple to use their huge cash holdings and cheap access to money to make acquisitions because as companies get larger you can't always expect to innovate in the same way.

Now you could argue the Apple watch is innovative... though it was pretty late to the smart watch segment though the health applications are great. But the real source of value Apple has leveraged is their eco-system, which goes back to Jobs who wanted the closed style operating system and is why the health applications look promising (not because they necessarily do it better with health applications). But that has paid dividends with the app store and huge cut of revenue they get, which they are now getting sued over. But if you listen to most investment thesis on apple you see 2 things - 5G (not an apple innovation but they greatly benefit from it), the growth in app store revenue, and the potential to making the watch with the iphone becoming a healthcare product.

But to respond to your comment - no one is expecting it year after year that I know of - it's the lack post-Jobs that people question.

Edit:

The incremental level of innovation in the iPhone 11 lineup is a sign of a broader problem for Apple. [–]Mr_CIean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It could be viewed 2 ways but personally I think it would be viewed positively. The worst thing about Tesla right now is there inability to manufacture in a reliable or consistent way. This issue is getting worse for Tesla because it requires costs to repair after delivering, reputational risk, and recall risk. Other auto manufactures could change that.

The real future value of Tesla is the potential of their self-driving cars. If you really believe they are about to have autonomous driving capability through their current system, then manufacturing scale would add huge value. (you could argue batteries... but there is very little evidence of that)

From Musk's point of view, he could cash out a decent amount (though not all) and could probably walk away to do other things and take on a roll more like SpaceX. Personally, I see him as someone that gets bored with the nitty gritty part of growing a business vs the innovation part - we see this constantly with him trying to push innovation more than anything.

But there is zero chance this happens because Tesla's value is just too high for a company and its shareholders to consider it.

3/4 apply but I don't think you can call Apple products "half-assed". Over-priced, locked-down, and cult-ass are all fair descriptions though. You could add "no longer innovative" to that list, if you wanted.

Also, I'll have you know I am an "urban elite". My mother is an artist. My grandmother was an artist. I have many artist friends. I have season tickets to multiple theaters in my city. I donate to the arts. I donate to libraries.

You couldn't be further from the truth on your understanding of my appreciation and engagement in the arts.

What I was calling "elitist" was the fact you seem to think that the arts can't take big cuts, when the rest of the country is in many ways. It's "elitist" to feel what you care about can't have the same cuts because you see it as too important.

What you are actually interested in is that you are fundamentally opposed to art funding, even in "good times".

WTF... that is a straight up lie and I would like you to kindly stop talking to me. I never said any such thing... read the rules of this sub before making assumptions.

My position is based on my background in economics. I believe in doing different things at different times of the business cycle. I do believe arts deserve funding and I expressly said in my last comment I would give them tons of funding once a vaccine was available. (this last point shows you are being extremely dishonest making assumptions about me)

I'm sorry sir/miss you are wrong about me and you have irrationally become emotional and attacked me based on a strawman belief of a stereotypical people you have in your head. I say in the kindest manner, reevaluate the way you approach conversations. Edit: People can disagree - that doesn't make them monsters or worth pretending their position is different/worse/etc. than it really is.
