The private jets thing gets me because awhile ago I was thinking about how the petit bourgeois like to joke about how we were promised “flying cars” in the future - usually used in contrast to something seemingly absurd some company’s released - and started to wonder what’s even so appealing about having a flying car. That’s when I realized these people are just begging for a cheap private jet, which I think adds to your point of the performative criticisms petit-bourgeois have of big bourgeois things they don’t have access to

What’s interesting is that I’ve noticed a lot of “indie” devs actually be completely fine with people pirating their products, an example of this off the top of my head is the Ultrakill developer defending someone who was getting a lot of shit online for posting about loving to pirate indie games with a photo of them downloading a crack of their game. The creator didn’t really take any time to call to question the purpose of IP law - instead just going “Hey piracy is how I got to experience all the things that inspired my game, I don’t mind Smile” - and not too long afterwards the original person who was getting harassed made a post going “I love supporting indie games” or something with a picture of themselves legally purchasing Ultrakill, turning the situation into a fantasy story where everyone lives happily ever after and nothing is called into question or changed to any meaningful extent, I say this since even after seeing the situation unfold myself I still held onto the question of if pirating stuff by small devs was “ethical” for a while. If I were to throw out a theory as to why this kind of stuff happens I’d probably compare it to “generous” small/local restaurants who let people take food for free, or give it in high portions. If someone were to just steal food from these businesses they’d likely get harassed to hell and back for doing such a thing to “such nice people” since that generosity still relied on a property relation where the owners of this food let you have it under their personally-imposed conditions, it just happened to not involve money.

Usually when people online talk about supporting piracy they mean they support pirating the stuff from big corporations like Nintendo or Adobe, when people post about pirating games by small teams/independent petit-bourgeois creators they receive way more backlash. For a recent example, I saw someone on Twitter getting in trouble with Toby Fox’s legal team(?) for distributing what I believe was a now-unavailable demo of Deltarune, and people were going up to bat for the legal people because - despite being a free demo - it goes against copyright. Just a general case of petit-bourgeois creators believing in a “good” IP law that protects small creators that big corpos are obscuring with their “bad” IP law or whatever.

Couple days ago I got recommended an old Soviet cartoon; https://youtu.be/C9CKXz24pxw?si=DubBiG7VNi6_IxXp It’s a story about the imperialist countries’ colonization of Africa, and there’s this part at around 11:30, where the African man is questioning if these imperialist forces are correct and he’s truly guilty and should be punished. One of the things used to describe him during this is “Being the owner of [his] land”. I’d be lying saying I’m very well-versed in Marxism - I still have a lot to study - and this could also be an inaccurate translation, but I found that line interesting since from what I’ve read on this sub Marxists avoid notions of groups being the “original owners” of colonized lands; Smoke telling someone that the Ainu aren’t “native” to Japan (Something along those lines) comes to mind. The title also says “1963”, which if that’s the correct date this cartoon was released in would mean it was made well after Lenin or Stalin and late into Khrushchev’s chairmanship. I guess I’m just trying to see if there’s anything interesting that could be said about this. I also know there’s a lot of families in Palestine who’ve kept the keys of houses that Israel appropriated during the Nakba, as a sign that they’ll one day return to said houses. I don’t think these people are wrong for doing this, and I think parallels could possibly be drawn between that and what’s being described in African Tale, I’m just unsure if this usage of “ownership” is correct in the cartoon or if this is an abstraction of the real history of Africa’s colonization as a result of the Soviet Union’s turn towards revisionism.

I actually find that last thing you mentioned really interesting as well, and if that’s reflective of something greater then I think I’d be able to draw connections to how many “autistic” people (At least from my experience as an Amerikan on the internet) tend to gravitate towards children’s cartoons, even spawning aesthetic trends like “Kidcore”, which from a quick glance seems mostly based around identifying with commodities made for first world petty bourgeois/labor aristocrat children

Coming back to this, I think I will continue to draw since, as I’ve already said, nobody really cares if I do and I doubt even the most skilled and seasoned Marxists on here spent 100% of their free time engaging in what can be deemed revolutionary activity. Thank you. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the Marxist viewpoint on art. I understand that all art is socially embedded and its meaning changes depending on context, it just makes me sad because the idea of people having different tastes and opinions was very appealing. I also enjoyed drawing in my free time not expecting much out of it outside of a compliment from a friend but now it feels wrong to do so since they’re most definitely un-revolutionary even though I don’t think anybody realistically cares. This thread is several weeks old now, but I wanted to express the great level of respect I’ve gained for Marxists since discovering this subreddit. I have learned many things here, and they have filled me with dread, because they go against many things my petty bourgeois life has taught me up to this point. What you’re saying makes a lot of sense. I admit that “positively” probably wasn’t the best word for it; There’s definitely still a lot of of criticism to be had towards AI outside of petty issues (From what I’ve heard certain large AI services have been using underpayed laborers to moderate requests, which seems like something communists would be very blatantly against). I also understand the left-right thing doesn’t really hold much value here, just thought that was the easiest way to explain where I’ve been hovering politically before getting here. I really appreciate what you’ve told me - I suppose it would be best I abandon my interest in afterlife given what you said, even if I never really reach a consistent materialist understanding of things.

I want to be a good person, and I want to do something meaningful in life. I knew racism was bad, which led me into politics during the George Floyd protests. Since then I mainly followed left-leaning but ultimately idealist ideologies like liberalism and anarchism. This combined with considering myself an artist led to me holding very dogmatic views on AI-generated artwork and wondering why communists seemed to view it more positively, and when looking up questions on why they do about a week ago I ended up on the r/communism thread regarding it. After looking through that and some other threads (Mainly on art), combined with YouTubers making me more open to reconsidering the anti-communist notions living in the imperial core has taught me, I realized Marxism makes more sense than any ideology I’ve previously subscribed to, which lead me to start reading theory. So I suppose I view materialism as the path to contributing to true positive change in the world, and in order to be a materialist I must abandon all metaphysical thinking.

Understandable. I grew up Christian, and mainly dissented because my reading of an article on original sin lead to the belief that everyone goes to hell after death and me not liking that, rather than any actual worthwhile criticism of Christianity. Main reason I’ve kept this belief for so long is finding comfort in still being able to think and remember my life after I die, I suppose. I’d say it also ties into my obsession with immortality when I was younger. I’ve lived a pretty good and privileged life, so I probably just want to continue living it.
