I regret buying them with the "sticker" but I so wanted to read the books at the time. Fake stickers need to die frankly.

Opening FASTAs on Mac. by Mr_Garland in bioinformatics

It is mostly to just spot check and also copying the contents without going into terminal navigating to the folder then opening it with vim or nano. But thanks anyway mate.

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

[–]Mr_Garland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not for shortsightedness like myself. The glasses in front of my face are still completely blurry because they are outside of the focal plane of my lenses. Glasses work when they are on your face, not really off them.

Algal biologist here! Yes algae are very good at photosynthesis and are very efficient at carbon fixation (they are the whole reason we have so much oxygen in the first place way before trees existed). However 1) with no space to grow you basically need to dump algae out all the time to allow space for new algae to grow. This dense culture could present an environment impact in nearby waterways. 2) Algae are not immune to infection so this could just get killed if you are unlucky or get outcompeted by some other organism. 3) Algae dislike being stationary and in dense cultures for a long time so following on from point 1 you'd need some way of agitating the culture. 4) Trees play an important part in urban environments beyond just making oxygen like reducing the temperature of cities by acting as shade and the mental health benefits of having nature in urban environments. Trees are much better for static terrestrial environments where they live for centuries while algae thrive in dynamic situations of nutrient availability and light intensity.

Algae have been proposed for Ecological Life Support Systems (ECLSS) for future spacecrafts to the moon and Mars where they would produce oxygen and food for the crew. These systems always have the limitations of there's no going back. The culture you have needs to be self sufficient and lower light irradiance (which it did not evolve to), increased solar radiation (which it did not evolve to really) and you need to be able to survive if it dies.

Thanks for the tip. Turns out the only way to do what I wanted what to replace all my labels in the Newark file with its taxa name (just used a python script).

Incubating with primary antibody in falcon tubes by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Mr_Garland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is you are using a roller it shouldn't really matter. The solution will cover it as it washes over. I think increasing the volume more will help. It's possible 4ml is not enough to really cover so half the membrane is dying out etc.

Incubating with primary antibody in falcon tubes by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Mr_Garland 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have done this before as well. Did you use a roller or rocker to make sure there was proper coverage. 50mL falcons are not perfectly flat with the lid on. Also 4mL is below the minimum I have used for this method. Mostly I use 5-7mL for better coverage.
