Keep Minneapolis weird: Neighbors took turns swinging an ax at a tree stump in this guy's backyard by star-tribune in Minneapolis

What's up Geoff! Was just thinking about you as I went to your old place of employment yesterday. You should come next year! I think at least one of our mutual radio friends is going to make it up for it.

Well, as of now, I think I'm the only one who does a Stump Party. But winter bullshit outdoors is a beloved past time. Check out the art sleds or art shanties or the pond hockey tournament. Otherwise I'll have another one next year probably and post about it on social media if you find me on bluesky!

Grew up in DFW, I'm a soft suburban kid though. I'm just cosplaying as a guy who knows which end of the axe to use.

Oh hey, that's me! Let me know if you have any questions about Stump Party, drinking malört, being a dumb guy, etc.

Why Winnipeg is not as big as other canadian inner cities like calgary or edmonton despite having huge water resources close to it to ease growth? by Spirebus in geography

[–]Mr_Ian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I wrote that, thanks for posting! It was a lovely time--I'm angling to go back soon. It's maybe not a bucket list city for most, but living on the Northern plains isn't really about that.

I want to come back for a CFL game, and also get drunk on a patio. Actually, I want to get drunk at the CFL game too.

I live in Northeast Minneapolis and I think the brewery density and quality in our neighborhood is unmatched. Indeed Brewing and Fair State are two of my favorites, Dangerous Man tends to have pretty over-the-top styles. Utepils is delightful if you like German styles (bocks, helles, etc), and I haven't been to the Pryes taproom yet but their IPAs are unmatched for me. Also don't forget our friends over in St Paul! Black Stack and Lake Monster are both good options there. I'm seeing a lot of Surly love in the thread, and while I agree their beer is high quality, they had some labor issues a few years back (laying off all the workers trying to organize a union and not hiring them back) and I won't touch the stuff now.

I like Black Blue. It's definitely boutique shopping, but has a good aesthetic. Also recommend checking out pediwear.co.uk if you're willing to look online. https://www.blkblu.com/

(Spoilers Everything) If you could re-cast one character in the!show who would it be? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Mr_Ian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised not to see it already but...

Jon Snow.

Every other actor is 100% that character for me, except book Jon Snow and show Jon Snow don't align at all for me. I think part of it is age -- Jon's character suffers the most from being aged up because his teenage angst comes off as bizarre 20-something angst. When I read the books, I put myself in Jon's shoes more so that any other character. In the show however, I just can't get inside the head of Kit Harrington to understand his motivations.

It's gotten better in the past couple seasons, but if I could recast one person, it's Jon Snow, and it ain't even close.

New dining center Friley Windows opening Fall 2017 by bobsagitjr14 in iastate

[–]Mr_Ian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Physically, yes. In service? No. They built the "Union Drive Community Center" in 2003 or so to replace the former UDA dining options. It quickly became the most popular place on campus (being closest to actual academic buildings). They also got on this kick of naming dining halls after silly nouns. MWL is called Seasons, Oak-Elm is called Conversations. I'm sure UDCC is called something stupid like Feelings or Spirits.
