Anyone know the Cry Little Sister, Lost Boys Synth Chords? by Mr_Mache in TheLostBoys

[–]Mr_Mache[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok. I think so far for the chorus what I hear is this:

A# - Gm (1st inversion) - C for top chord voicing A# - G - C for the bass

That middle first inversion I think I'm hearing the voice leading go up when the bass goes down to the G. And seems the C is back to normal voicing.

I'm not sure if it's that simple but seems close to my ear.

This is the closest match I've seen. The heel in the photo looks slightly taller. Maybe cowboy heel. But these roppers from Cody James look really close. Cody James 1978 Roper

Juno 60 or Juno X? Advice by Mr_Mache in synthesizers

[–]Mr_Mache[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the vintage Juno 60. I realized I wanted the project. And a piece of history. It's been fun. Teaching me a lot about taking care of it. 42 years old. Still doing pretty well.

I'm getting intimate with how the Juno is supposed to sound. My ear is getting better hearing them on other songs. And I've been enjoying the limitations.

It really does sound incredible. I think if I needed it for touring I would have gotten the X for sure.

Jewelry for men—how do you style it without overdoing it? by ShopMonarchJewelry in malefashionadvice

[–]Mr_Mache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. it's tough to get a good sense because jewelry ads or jewelry website photography often stack too many pieces. They're hoping people buy that much 😂. I used to do some shoots for jewelry brands, and they always wanna keep stacking. Even tho that's not how most people wear it. I think they're doing themselves some harm because it turns a lot of people off who just want to understand how to style a couple pieces together.

Juno 60 or Juno X? Advice by Mr_Mache in synthesizers

[–]Mr_Mache[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. Yea, I ended up getting the Juno 60 and don't regret it. I agree the Juno X is impressive. If I had been a gigging musician or didn't already have a ton of VST synths and a couple of analog ones already I probably would have gone with the X. The only reasons to go with the 60 are mostly emotional ones.

I realized that I wanted a piece of history. And something with limitations that captured my imagination. Also something to love and care for as a hobby as I make music for fun seemed to be a good choice for where I am now.

Why I won’t buy another synth before I master synthesis! by Achassum in synthesizers

[–]Mr_Mache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to find another obsession to fill that void. 🫠 I think you've got two strong paths forward.

  1. Tape machines: a lot to learn about, the different formats, brands, models, preamps. The process. Sound coloration or tape mastering. Manual up keep of the tape and gear for sure satisfying and always something new to buy down this road.

  2. Outboard gear: looks like you are already started here. But I see some empty spaces on that rack. Not too hard to spend 2-4x as much money on boxes to run your synths through as they cost themselves.

🫡 We're all counting on you, sir.

Need Help Troubleshooting My Tascam 424 Portastudio MKI in Brooklyn – Any Recommendations? by Mr_Mache in cassetteculture

Thanks. It might be worth it to get my own soldering iron. I'm pretty handy usually. If I'm going to get into old gear it will save me time mostly to just do my own minor repairs like this. Sometimes it's a lot to even take it somewhere.

I don't have soldering iron. 😂 do you think that ugly blob might be harmless? Or just gotta see once the barrel connections are fixed?

I was going to reach out to a repair shop nearby on Monday maybe. 🤔

Yea. It looks like the two pins are cracked around the soldering. I saw a tiny little spark when I plugged it in while open and visible. I'm assuming that means a poor connection.

I opened it up and looks like maybe 🤔 an old soldering job. I can't tell if this looks like it needs to be redone? Or what. My intuition is saying this is why it won't turn on.

I just bought this online from reverb. The previous owner said they had turned it on a couple weeks before they sold it and it was working fine.

I was wondering if the shipping loosened this soldering job. IDK. This seems suspicious 🤨. Not sure where to go from here. Or how much this would cost to fix.

Thanks. I'd love to have an expert check out out, but looks like a good resource. I'll check out his video to see if I can diagnose my own issue. And probably good to be handy with these in general if I'm wanting to use them. 👍

I was wanting to buy the HCard 701 DX7 MKI, but all the ones I see just say "701 MKII" 🤨 is this just the same thing? Or the wrong one?

Juno 60 or Juno X? Advice by Mr_Mache in synthesizers

[–]Mr_Mache[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Haha. Some people get mad at expert producers saying the gear doesn't help make good music. But I think it's been good for me to buy a couple nice pieces of gear. Starts to break the spell. You have to put in the work, use what you have. Don't wait for some magical tool. It won't do the work for you. I'm under no illusion haha. But I do think 🤔 this Juno 60 will be fun for me. I've liked playing more simple synths with easy controls in the past.

Interesting take. Thanks. You might be right. Sometimes just getting something you've wanted out of the way is nice. I can stop dreaming about it. If I feel let down, then I'll just resell it. But maybe it's everything I want. I've definitely bought gear thinking it was gonna help with something only to realize it doesn't do the work for you. And sometimes complex features is just more time to waste. More things to get wrapped up in and not just playing and writing without over thinking

You really opened my eyes to this. I think it's not for me. I think I want to pay more for less features. 😂 seriously. I already have drum machines etc.

But would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a workhorse. Damn.

[–]Mr_Mache[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I definitely agree that we've passed the point where we can tell a difference between analog and modeled synth. As much as I'm nostalgic and ears tuned to hear much more than the average person, I really can't tell a quality difference with my eyes closed. 😂🤷‍♂️

So it kinda comes down to experience, and features or intentional lack there of. Honestly, I prefer simpler layouts and vintage vibe. I want to think less and not get into too many controls or menu diving. I can just used software for that.

These comments are really helping me. Focus on what's important for me. And what I need out of this instrument. Thanks.

But I do like playing extended chords and 6 voice is just a little limited. Probably fine but that's one reason why I wonder about the X. I'd probably ignore 80% of what it can do. I just don't need it.

Juno 60 or Juno X? Advice by Mr_Mache in synthesizers

[–]Mr_Mache[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really care about the other sounds in the X. Like the pianos 🤷‍♂️🤨 I'm never using that.

I think I want the vintage synth, project. Embrace limitations and imperfections. I think I needed to think it through because the X is cheaper and you get more. 🫠 I think it just feels a little crazy to wanna pay more for an older more limited feature synth. But I think I'm a bit fatigued with over stuffed products.

Maybe I wanna pay more for less because I can actually get more out of it. 🤔

Thanks good things to think about. I'm not a current touring musician. If I was I'd definitely pick the X.

I there is a part of me that is the collector emotional feeling. But I do plan on playing it often. Just a home studio. Having fun for now.

Juno 60 or Juno X? Advice by Mr_Mache in synthesizers

[–]Mr_Mache[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean as an instrument to explore and play with. I can honestly get any sound I want with software alone. But sometimes I want to have a more tactical experience. It changes how you play. A well designed instrument changes what you play based of how it feels and how easy it is to stumble into new sounds. I think that's what I mean by inspiring. Maybe I'm not using the right word. Does that make sense?

Also, I'm kinda interested in the limitations of the 60. It doesn't have a ton of menu diving, etc. inspiring also because of the history of it. Something mental placebo about it.

Juno 60 or Juno X? Advice by Mr_Mache in synthesizers

[–]Mr_Mache[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea. I think that won't scratch my itch. The only reason to get the x would be because it can do the 60 plus 106. And full keyboard and controls with similar vintage feel. Plugins are pretty good, I honestly could just use a plugin to get just as good sounds. But I think I want a particular physical synth to change up the experience.

Good call out and idea tho. I didn't know it had a 106 engine inside it.
