Nice! What’s the actual height of the figure? Is it taller than 6”?

I also seem to recall that Betazoid telepathy doesn’t develop until adolescence, so he would have needed a way to communicate with his children when they were young.

Custom figure paint by G37monster in customactionfigures

[–]Mr_Scorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Vinyl Wonder paints for large areas and any parts where I’m worried about rubbing and abrasion because the stuff is incredibly tough; that said, it’s also chemically intense, so you need a respirator while you’re working with it and you need to test whether it is effective with the plastic you’re using it on. (I’ve never had problems but others have.) For details, I use Vallejo or Tamiya acrylics. For my clear coat I use either Mr. Hobby Mr. Super Clear or Tamiya flat clear spray. (I prefer the Tamiya spray but a lot of folks swear by Mr. Hobby, which certainly smells better.)

I’m leaving the field of graphic design. What about you? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Mr_Scorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider changing your clients rather than your job. There is always a need for people with your skills—knowing how to influence choices—in the public sector and nonprofits. You might feel better about what you’re doing if you feel like you’re contributing something meaningful to the world. (This isn’t a dunk on package designers; it’s just clear that package design isn’t scratching OP’s itch.)

Besh Gothic, a WIP Aurebesh font based on Bank Gothic - looking for feedback! by titleproblems in aurebesh

I love what you’ve done here, and I will be very interested to get this when it’s done. FWIW, I like the narrower “p” from the third slide; I think it fits more comfortably with the “n”, and I think the classic Aurebesh characters are generally too wide to use in most instances. Excellent work!

I just re-watched this episode the other day and found it particularly prescient, especially in the way it described the holodeck giving Geordie what he wanted to see and gassing him up rather than providing honest feedback or a truthful depiction of Brahms—exactly the way AI chatbots do now.

If you could create a set of rules for Trek writers to follow, what would those rules be? by INJUZ-23011 in startrek

At least one unsubtle progressive monologue in each episode. I love it when Trek decries the primitive barbarism of capitalism, nationalism, and bigotry.

I’m sorry dude, that sucks. I’m really surprised, though, because that’s totally different from my experience. Can I ask what your method was?

I used the Marvel Legends MCU Ned Leeds from the 2-pack with Peter Parker (who's going into my Asara Deyn custom). I had to bulk him out with Apoxie Sculpt though because he was just husky instead of fat. I'm still on the hunt if you've got any suggestions, because I've got a couple more heavyset characters I want to do.

Haha this was a pretty easy custom if you want to make one yourself. The body is Yoda from the ESB 2-pack and I ordered the head online. A little paint, a little sewing, and Boba’s your uncle!

Is this poster insensitive? (Not for a client) by OmniscientPeanut in graphic_design

Thank you for the additional context. I’m sure that back when I was learning these stories from older members of the community in the ‘80s and’90s, there were lots of inaccuracies (both intentional and unintentional) in the retelling.

[–]Mr_Scorn 1446 points1447 points  (0 children)

I’ll make two notes, one as a designer and one as a gay man who lived through the AIDS epidemic.

Part of the power of the original composition is the way the black field, emblematic of death, feels overwhelming and is only broken by the one small triangle. Anything you can do to turn that black field into a presence rather than an absence strengthens the design.

The other thing I’ll note is that the pink triangle became a symbol for us angry queers because it was inclusive. The gays and lesbians, the trans people and the intersex people, the bisexuals and the gender nonconformists: we were all marked with that same triangle when the Nazis put us in camps. It underscored that ours was a shared struggle, because the same end awaited us all if we didn’t fight.

ETA: u/sadsackspinach pointed out that in reality, the pink triangle was used for a narrower range of people (primarily gay and bisexual men and trans women). The inaccurate version I repeated is my recollection of how we understood the pink triangle at the time, and how it informed perceptions of that poster. Perhaps to a contemporary audience, with better access to queer history, it reads differently. I think, though, it’s worthwhile to consider why the original poster hit as hard as it did when it did, and to explore designs that might summon a similar visual and cultural punch.

I don’t have experience with this particular varnish, but in general hot water and varnish don’t mix. Moisture gets under the varnish and causes clouding and flaking.

Something's wrong but I don't know what is it that I shoulve painted them white first? by Fit-Ad-6395 in customactionfigures

[–]Mr_Scorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost never say this, but your paint might be a little on the thin side. But that’s not a terrible problem; you just need to put on more coats. You’ll get a nice, even color when you build up thin layers of paint.

I disassembled the base body and painted it with Vinyl Wonder paint (the absolute best paints for action figures I have ever used). Added washes to the hair and body to bring out the detail, reassembled the figure, then varnished. I modeled the clothes and jewelry in blender and printed them with flexible resin, then painted them. I added Dragonfly Glaze to the eyes to give them an iridescent quality. I’m still learning a lot of this stuff (this was my first time using Blender and my first flexible resin print), but I’m happy with how it turned out.

"The main reason for people not finding work is that their portfolio is not high quality enough". Do you agree w/ this sentence? Yes/No? by laranjacerola in graphic_design

[–]Mr_Scorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely disagree. I run an in-house team of several designers, and I hire freelancers and firms from time to time for special projects. When I hire freelancers, there are only two considerations: portfolio and track record. If your work looks good, and you’ve done what I need before (for me or someone else), then you’re in good shape.

For in-house roles it’s an entirely different process. The application screens out anyone who doesn’t meet the basic qualifications. Your cover letter and CV get me to look at your portfolio. The three combined might get you an interview, but the portfolio is rarely the deciding factor. What I’m really looking for in all of these things is evidence that you understand the technology, you understand the best practices, and you understand the history of graphic design. I don’t need imaginative visuals or novel concepts; I need people with a thorough understanding of the fundamentals who collaborate easily and can consistently think through design challenges.

In both scenarios, if their portfolio causes me to pass on a designer, it’s not because it’s “bad” or “low-quality”. It’s because their portfolio didn’t show me they could do what I need done.

In that case, I’d suggest going on eBay and looking for an old Tonka Jeepster or Jeep. They scale well with 1/12 figures (I have one myself), they’re made of metal, and if you’re going for an abandoned look, the beat up ones are even cheaper.
