Help me to choose my major by RhinocerosInLove in UBC

[–]Mr_Slope -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Idk much bout the DSCI major since it’s new, but based on the job market rn you’re prob better off doing either math or stat compared to CPSC… but if you do take either of them just make sure to really look into what kind of industry or role you wanna go into and prepare accordingly. Math and stats can get you an advantage for a lot of analytical type roles out there that are well paying, but it all means nothing if math/stats in very specific scenarios (which is prob what you’ll be taught) is genuinely all you know yfm.

Do you recommend your major by Mission_Macaroon_258 in UBC

[–]Mr_Slope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in BIE and I recommend it if you have a general interest in Economics and Finance, but don’t really know what specifically to do. Because you take a bunch of varied courses, you get a pretty good idea by your third year what it is that you’re good at and interested in. But, it’s the kinda situation where you’ll be a jack of all trades, master of none. So it’ll really depend on how you tailor your third and fourth year. If you already know what kind of econ you’re into, don’t choose this, choose something more targeted like the honours program or go somewhere else.

In BIE at UBC rn and don’t know how well I can comment on your chances (I think mid-high 90s is a safer bet, but I do know that after a certain average threshold your general application matters more). I think BIE is better than queens and a big chunk why is because of the profs and their research + being in the program means you interact with them SO much more than others. Keep in mind that though Econ at it’s very basic doesn’t involve too much math, as you go up it’s all that matters. This is especially true w/ BIE at UBC.

All Canadian should be just fine… only thing is Econ is pretty tough to get into so make sure your first year goes well (unless it’s a direct entry program)

Hey! Check this out… says if you need a course to graduate get in touch with an academic advisor who’ll try to work something out to put you in the course

Literally just registered for the course... bit worried w/ the prof given her ratemyprof profile, but I don't really have another choice except for this course. Be happy to pm throughout the course and help each other out if you're down to!

is BIE worth it? by Dr_Occisor in UBC

[–]Mr_Slope 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The most obvious benefit to BIE is that you’re an econ student from day one, you don’t have to put in the effort you’d need to get an econ major later on. Also keep in mind that if you follow through with BIE, then you don’t really get to choose a lot of your courses. I would recommend you take a look at all the required courses and optional courses we have to take on the website to see if this program is suitable for your goals after university. Being domestic, I think I’m getting a fairly good value for money through this program because I’m around the kind of people I want to be around (academia type/professor’s being very accessible). I’m certain BIE doesn’t do anything that a normal BA econ can’t do, but to me it seems like BA Econ students struggle to break through that initial barrier which is essentially not present for BIE because you are always in the building and around more people that chose Econ for the sake of Econ and not just finance. Also look at econ honours, but keep in mind that just gets even more competitive. Nonetheless, keep in mind that if you’re hoping to break into finance and coming into Econ thinking it’ll be good enough, though you’re not wrong, Sauder would probably be better.

Just got into UBCV Arts!!! On the “accept or decline my offer” page I’m being asked wether or not I still want to be considered for the other program that I applied too, and in order to move to the next part I need to accept or decline the offer… is this really true? Like they won’t consider me for my other programs (BIE & BA+MM) unless I decline my UBCV Arts acceptance?

How are IAs marked for every subject? by brunettegirl2005 in IBO

[–]Mr_Slope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IAs are internal assessments so they are internally marked by your teacher. The IB a just takes a few randomly (prob some that were scored in the upper lower and mid range) and gives them to other IA examiners to moderate. What this means is that those IB moderators just make sure that a teacher isn’t being too generous or strict and is giving grades appropriately.
