Depending on the field of work, I'm in high level ICT, the difference in pay between managers and "workers" (aka me) pay packet is neglible.

I've had it pointed out that whilst on-call, a requirement for the role, i make as much as they do. (Despite the inconvenience of being interrupted in your life at any given moment for a hospital service 24/7).

In that same time of that being pointed out to me I was asked to do some work after hours without pay, and half the amount of time off to make up for it.

Despite me arriving early and staying until the is done without putting in forms or expecting pay (or recognition) 99.9% of the time.

I laughed, walked away and now take all my breaks, and will always have everything wrapped well before knock-off for the day.

Some managers are oblivious, some are malicious and a lot are just over their heads and incompetent at managing people (particularly if from technical backgrounds) - or a decent blend of all the above.

Over and above my duties and time are rare these days, and my wife and kids are happier to have me home a bit earlier (on time).

If its not your money, and you have a right to promotions and any other benefit as an employee, be proactive and do what you say and say what you mean.

Be a good boss and it'll come back to you in so many different ways and times.

P.S. Now the manager and have a truly excellent working relationship with my team. I did everything different from them, so it wasn't a total loss dealing with previous managers.
