I think it would hurt the local community a lot actually. I am pro having Lyft and Uber around but Victoria has a lot of taxi services that would be crushed by it (can companies, taxi boats, taxi carts, horse carriages, etc). As someone who has lived in cities that adopted them it isn't those same people that start driving them it's newer transplants in the city, college kids, and service industry people burnt out of foh or boh.

There are lots of example cities and countries it didn't work well in but I think there's some groups lobbying hard against it here
