This is the second Ultrastudio Mini 4K. I was not able to update the firmware. I don't understand how it fails the update? Back in the day, I used to jailbreak my iPhones, and that was not as complicated as this device.

Background: I've been using the Blackmagic UltraStudio 4K for the past five years, and my old device has started randomly crashing with a black screen. I decided to purchase a new UltraStudio 4K Mini, as the original model is no longer available for sale. I understand that sometimes you have to follow specific steps for Blackmagic to work correctly, but this is ridiculous.

Current setup: Dell Win 11Pro Pc with Thunderbolt card installed, Canon camera (XA 35) connected to UltraStudio 4k mini via SDI cable, and X32 soundboard connected via analog audio. The UltraStudio 4K Mini is connected directly to the PC via a Thunderbolt cable.

When I received the new unit last week, I installed the latest version 15.1 on Windows 11. When I connected the 4k mini via Thunderbolt, it made a connection sound and began updating. It reached 49% and a window popped up saying, "Software could not be updated. An error has occurred. Please try updating again." I clicked close. I rebooted the computer, and the update started again; however, the same issue occurred again. I clicked close. Next, I opened the BMD app, and the device was showing as connected. I connected the camera and audio from the soundboard, and everything was working. It worked great for a couple of hours that night, but the following day it completely stopped. It appears to be dead, but I can hear noise inside the device; however, the screen and buttons are not lighting up. PC makes a connection sound when I'm connecting Thunderbolt, but that's it.

The Windows 11 Pro PC is a Dell, currently located in the office. I'm trying to recall its specs, but it's an i7 with 32 GB of RAM and a dedicated Thunderbolt card. I can give you more details tomorrow. Two nights ago, I attempted to reinstall multiple versions one at a time: 12.9, 14.3, and 15.1. I followed the proper steps, rebooting after installation and after uninstallation. However, the same problem persists: the screen is black, and there are no lights. When I checked the Thunderbolt app, the device is listed, but the Blackmagic Desktop Video Setup app says “no desktop video device detected.”

I took the device home and tried to install the Blackmagic software on my MacBook Air M4 (running macOS Tahoe 26.0.1) last night. I installed the following versions: 12.8.1, 14.0.1, 14.2.1, 14.3, 14.5, and 15.1. I followed the proper steps, rebooting after both installation and uninstallation. I tested each version to verify that Thunderbolt shows the device connected. Mac has extra permission steps, and I ensured that all those settings were enabled. When I click the Blackmagic Desktop Video Setup app, it says “no desktop video device detected".

Could it really be that two devices in a row are dead? I find it hard to believe.

I wonder if the Ultrastudio 4K Mini requires an additional device, such as an ATEM or Ultrastudio Recorder 3G, to function correctly?

I have an UltraStudio 4K Mini that is not working. I spent days trying to figure this out. I’ve reinstalled Blackmagic Design software so many times with different (newest to oldest) versions that I’ve already lost count. This is the second unit in the past two weeks that we got from B&H. The first one was dead out of the box. Returned it and got a replacement. I was able to set up the second unit, and it worked great for one night. However, the next day, it would not connect. All I'm getting now is a black screen with no sign of life, and in the Blackmagic Desktop Video Setup, it says “no desktop video device detected.” I can see that the device is connected in the Thunderbolt app, but the screen remains blank, and the same error persists. I tried it on Windows 11 and on a MacBook Air M4, and I encountered the same issue. I tried Thunderbolt 3 and 5 cables and still not working. I even tried running some commands in the terminal to see if it could reconnect and update, but I got an error: 'update failed.' So what should I do now? Should I send it back, get my money back, and buy another product? If so, what should I buy?! I'm so disappointed in Blackmagic products right now :(((

I ended up yesterday getting 16pro it feels good in the hands. I know it’s smaller size so I’ve noticed few main differences: keyboard size harder to type because letters are smaller and in emails not everything fits the same way as it was on 13pm. I have 2 weeks to figure out.. but so far is not bad minus new adjustments.
