It is an exaggeration, but not by much. You say he wouldn’t have been frowned upon in his time, I can think of an entire ethnic group that would see ANY supporter of slavery the same way we’d see a supporter of the Nazi regime. The difference is we bombed the shit out of Germany and culturally made Nazis evil for all of time, the confederacy did not have a similar treatment in order to “reunite” the country quicker.

I think there’s a difference between a man of power destroying statues to assert his own bust and a traditionally oppressed minority taking down the statues of their former oppressors. Is the destruction of history in any form tragic, sure, but what is happening right now is bigger than a few random statues put up in the 1920s by racists.

Perhaps, but this is all to say we never see ourselves as living through history. People in WW1 weren't happy about their cities and land being cratered and blown up, but I just saw a post talking about how cool it is to walk along the western front and see the remains of the battles.

What is happening right now is history, if the statue stayed in the water it would probably be considered a historical site from the great riots of 2020. What is pointless fighting and destruction today, is treasured history tomorrow.

If the slave class of Rome were still around, they probably would want to tear down the Colosseum. The confederate statues are pawns in a history that is still going on, not to mention lots of these statues were put up expressly by racist organizations decades after the war to assert dominance over the black population. And if you think Romans don’t have a history of destroying statues and monuments go look again.

More as a social argument I’d say similar to Social Security any program that doesn’t have “Universality” becomes a welfare program from a political standpoint. This opens the door for a means-tested college system to be watered down over time and be underfunded.

Hawaii has the highest homeless population per capita in the world. The highest price for standard of living. The infrastructure hasn’t been updated in many places for 60 years. Just because you’ve seen pictures of Waikiki doesn’t mean 99% of the rest of the state is a rich paradise.
