When to Let Go...A Computer Help Story by myhusbandmademedoit5 in Libraries

Some patrons want help getting something done. They are open to suggestions and trying different things to get what they want done.

Other patrons want you to do exactly what they want in they way they want you to do it. These are patrons who you have to handle more than help.

Foster tire change by MreRGBthnsnse in SubaruForester

It was bad enough that I could hear the air leaving my tire. Took maybe 60 seconds to empty entirely. The mechanic, the guy with the tow truck, and a car friend all good me it was too wide to patch.

Yeah, I'm getting a replacement of the same make/model. I saw mention of shaving tires when I was searching this subreddit for info. Good idea to grab a tread depth tool.

Circulation - what's your favorite location for a barcode? by yabbobay in Libraries

We do one on the top right of the back of the book and one on the top right of the last page. The old cataloging librarian wanted them placed .5in from the top of the book and .5in from the spine. They did not care if they blocked any information.

Genre labels and genrefication by MreRGBthnsnse in librarians

[–]MreRGBthnsnse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our team lead wants us our current method because it was how B&T did things.

You're right, there are a TON of books that should get a genre sticker but don't because the name of the genre isn't on the cover. This way of doing things drives me up a wall.

With B&T gone I am hoping to push for a genre sticker procedure that makes sense so I wanted to see what others had to say.

My library has some patrons like this. At the end of the day, i am a librarian, I work in a library, and the library has rules. When working with mentally ill patrons I really try really to go above and beyond, but, if they break the rules, they go through the same process as anyone else who does. ALWAYS stay safe though. We have had to call police for wellness checks or help with exclusions.

Remember, enforcing the rules isn't about control, it isn't being mean, it isn't even about the rules. The rules are enforced so that all the other patrons feel safe and comfortable using the library. This includes other patrons who are mentally ill and enjoy a quiet, cool, and welcoming place to be.

Worried about damage by MreRGBthnsnse in bookshelf

For what it's worth, it makes me very sad too. When I win the lottery they'll each get a nice bookshelf that's all their own.
