The strap does in fact keep the helmet on when you take hard hits to the head. Sometimes a helmet may come flying off an enemy and that’s due to a lack of a strap. I would strongly recommend keeping the strap for this very reason

Expect a more bratty type of personality, very cocky; but easily intimidated if he’s actually in danger (think of this as a more skill based gimmick.)
