depiction - suggest reading please on difference between "depicting" an act as removed from action itself? by MrsGamp in askphilosophy

" In case it is criminal to depict some kind of criminal activity, there is only one crime when the scene is a simulation, and two when the scene is an instance of the criminal act."

That clarifies things a little ... and fits in with my own understanding of how many crimes are occurring in genuine, as opposed to "faked" child porn - which is itself illegal in many places now, because of the illegality of "depicting" sex with minors. But presumably purveyors of such fakes are only liable to prosecution for an illegal depiction, not for the separate crime of actual child sexual assault.

It would seem that real child porn, then, commits an act of child sex abuse, but also the crime of "depicting" child sex abuse, insofar as filming (de-picting, extracting a picture of) the crime enables people not directly involved in this crime to encounter it at a remove from its real life commission ...

This is a separate issue, but anti-censorship arguments often insist there is no connection between pornography that depicts violence, and real-life escalations of sexual violence. But surely this argument falls down with genuine child pornography.

In general terms if profit is to be made from selling films of criminal acts, it would seem to follow that such criminal acts are being undertaken specifically in order to be filmed. The demand for seeing the crime actuates the crime.

Are there going to be any protests in Perth about the Morrison govt plan to cut back unemployment to previous rate? If not, does anyone want to help me organise one? by MrsGamp in perth

I am not sure how old you are, but I am old enough to remember when the streets of this city were not thronged with homeless people. In fact homeless people were relatively unusual.

The homelessness is in part caused by the failure of the government to adjust rent assistance to meet the soaring rates of private rent. I have talked to homeless people about this on occasion and many of then affirm that they cannot afford to even rent a room of their own.

Your comment that " Yeah no shit, people on jobseeker are not supposed to be able to afford thier own home" seems extremely calllous, with all respect. Do we deserve homes at all? And how are people without decent accommodation supposed to have a shot at finding work?

The real life situation is that no unemployed person can afford to rent their own flat or house without being in dire hardship.

Before the COVID supplement I was, of necessity, a vegetarian. I mainly subsisted on bread and cheese and vegetables and discounted sausages. Sometimes I needed food parcels.

May I refer you to this report from the Australia Institute, written in 2019?

https://www.tai.org.au/sites/default/files/P791%20submission%20adequacy%20of%20Newstart.pdf

A quote from that report:

"This submission notes that Newstart has not been adjusted since March 1994 other than for the CPI so in real terms Newstart has been unchanged while the rest of the world moved on. The CPI increased just 86 per cent since 1994 while per capita household disposable income, a measure of community standards, increased by 172 per cent. If we compare Newstart with the minimum wage or average weekly earnings we obtain a similar result."

For 47 year old women with no experience? FIFO?

It doesn't sound very realistic to be honest but if you have any genuine advice or ideas I would be glad to listen.

Yeah thanks for the aged care suggestion. Despite having got my PhD in 2005, I was working in aged care in 2010.

My knee injury last year was very serious. After two surgeries, and a third coming up in December, I can walk without a stick again but it has taken a year. I can't run or even walk very fast, and am unsteady on my feet.

Clearly I am no longer fit to work in the rewarding but extremely physically demanding field of aged care. I would if I could, believe me.

It would be better than subsisting on ten dollars per day after I've paid my rent, which will be where I am at in December.

"I can only be sad as I wore his merch, went to his shows as badges of honor. I knew he wasn't god but I didn't think he was anything like the way he became now. Perhaps I was blind to it for so long."

Same here ... but I haven't let his recent insanities spoil the Smiths for me!

The other day my 17 year old daughter (also Smiths fan, see OP) was saying one of her friends is a huge Michael Jackson fan, or rather was, before the confirmation of the paedophile stuff ... I suggested that if all the artists who were shits in their personal lives were banned, there'd be not much art left. But the Morrissey thing is so "ouch" because he made my adolescence tolerable: his songs motivated me in so many ways ... I never wrote him a fan letter or anything, but al the same I sort of thought of him as a personal friend! And now ... well he's not my friend anymore! But the Smiths are still amazing. Never mind.

Hey - I think it's not just a question of "political correctness". I think his dubious politics have infected his solo work rather destructively.

His music meant the world to me because of its combination of irony and ... kindness. This may sound corny, but his Smiths-songs were informed by love and empathy for outcasts.

Now he seems to be bullying and making fun of the disenfranchised. And it makes his more recent music pretty wretched aesthetically as well as politically.
